This only started yesterday morning on my '23 4Runner I have had for a year now.

    * It is not a "flicker" or other sign of a poor original OEM bulb electrical connection or issues with an LED upgrade. But only passenger dome light comes on then off (like a strobing effect,) at timed intervals. Driver or Passenger lights would turn on and off, then I couldn't get the passenger light to come back on yesterday.

    * Today the intervals changed from slow strobing to three faster strobes then back. Like some kind of caution or warning. And I could not get the light strobing to stop today until I turned and left the door switch off. Putting headlights on or car in gear did nothing. I have not found anything to explain this online.

*** Its like a software issue, but with what, & how to remedy problem?

PS. First time I noticed the "shift lever light" this morning. ;)

Oddly now passenger light will not come on again, as it did yesterday. I start my day at 0 dark thirty, so that may have something to do with it. I will check again in morning tomorrow.

Today BOTH lights came on when I opened door. Then started car & as I close the door R passenger light started strobing again. Then went out & could not get it back on again. WTH?! A halogen bulb would flicker & go out, BUT NOT have timed strobes & then go out & RESET back on the next morning. Only a computer software glitch could do that that I am aware of. Guess I will have to bring to Dealer to address? But NOTHING like this explained ANYWHERE I can find on NET & don't need Dealer Mechs needing an excuse to just tear things up!

I have experienced strobing effect with LEDs going bad. Back story I got a 2 LEDs from a famous USA LED bulbs seller. Put them on license plate bulbs. After few months they started to flicker / strobe. I put cheap Amazon LEDs I had and it was gone.

My guess is LED issue. Could be wrong...

But these light bulbs were not replaced with LEDs. Original bulbs I'm told are halogens? Guess I better pop the cover & see for myself?

My bet is that the original pwner replaced those bulbs with LEDs

Dealers are known to do these small mods, especially since the stock dome light filament bulb is laughably dim.

The alternative is a bad body ECU, which is orders of magnitude more expensive to fix ;)

I got some time, so popped light lense & this is what I found! :annoyed:
It looks like someone put LEDs in there. Now, just replace & problem should be solved :amen:

Definitely LED replacement - see picture.
At least it was easy to pull out with pliers.
Going with Diode Dynamics map light LED factory 194 replacements. Never trust Dealership! :muscleflexing:

Live and learn, NEVER TRUST what you were told about what you purchased, check for yourself.
I'm mobility limited now, but could manage this simple sit on my butt in car seat fix.

My DD 194 LED map light bulb lasted less than two years then started flickering as well. Suggest this instead: https://www.4runners.com/posts/648449

Just an update and a question.
I got my new LED bulbs and should NOT have been an issue. But whomever put the last LED bulb in had turned the socket. So when I pushed new bulb in it pushed the socket out of the circuit board. I guess barely holding on?
Now after struggling with the reflector, I managed to get it out of the way and access the light socket with needle nose pliers, pull it into place, and then turn to lock back in proper place. (The socket is grooved to turn and lock.) Lights worked, but had to get that reflector back in place and not short-out contacts to light switches. Oh and the shift light has a plastic piece to focus it that I finally got back in place.... Finally got all good. Reflector a little worse for the wear but works again as was meant to. Anyway, map lights now work as they are supposed to.
Just be warned about those light sockets, if turned they will push loose. Any ideas or thoughts on upgrade to that whole map light assembly? :notsure:

The whole console is held on with two screws inside the sunglasses holder and plastic clips/pegs. Remove the two screws and pull the whole console down. The light bulb sockets engage/disengage from the circuit board with a quarter turn.

You can bypass the whole thing and run this full-panel capacitive touch light like I did, but you still need to pull the console and remove the bulb sockets: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9CNJ68G

I have that module instead of sunglass holder, so video was most helpful.
