Changing the oil for the first time. Is there a raised ring around the plug hole for the washer to seal against or am I looking at the old washer stuck to the pan? The washer wasn't on the plug when I took it off but I can't be certain it didn't fall into the drain pan. If it's the old washer, it's on there pretty good (original washer from Toyota, not aftermarket). Should I try to carefully knock that off or simply reinstall the plug on the old washer and check for leaks? If it needs to come off, any tips on safely removing so a future seal isn't compromised?

The washer will be the same exact size as the diameter of the drain plug seating surface. If that ares pictured is larger, then it's part of the pan.

The Toyota one loves to get stuck on the pan, a horizontal whack from a screwdriver oughta do it.

Mine always stick to the pan. A quick smack with your purse, and it should come right off!

There is s that issue as well as the anti-reverse clip on the plastic oil filter housing. I bent the clip on mine cause I did not know it was there until after I removed it.

Toyota crush washer stuck to the pan. Take a pocket screwdriver and give it a flick through the I.D.

I use Dorman 1/2" copper crush washers to avoid sticking.

Congratulations! You have an Everlasting Washer. Not every toyota has one, but when you get one, cherish it.

As long as you clean the plug and washer mating surfaces, and use proper torque, it will give you a decade or more of leak free service. You’ll know you need a new one when it falls off.

It was the gasket. Got it off and will replace with a Fumoto valve at the next oil change.
