255/80R17 tire size

Are snowflake wheels considered traction wheels?

 

They aren't snow tires, but they are 3 peak rated.
Most States (Colorado & Utah at least) count 3 peak rated tires as acceptable for "traction device weather" - you still have to have chains/cables in your vehicle as a backup though.

 

Yeah, but the post I was responding to was about factory snowflake wheels.

 

I've never heard the term traction wheel. What does that mean?

I only know of ‘traction wheels’ referring to the driven wheels on a semi…

 

Have you heard of stock snowflake wheels?

Trying to digest how wheel size will play into it all

right now, the stock ‘16 trail wheels but diving into the idea of maybe finding a more ideal/better suiting wheel for 255/80 if that even is the case

also taking into account, what new wheels, pending of size, would mean for future setup

getting tough n I think I might be dragging this out

while trying to understand backspace, offset, width, etc… while taking into account my current setup, just wondering if there actually is a more prudent wheel out there when going this route

 

If you have 16" wheels, I envy you. There are TONs of good tires available in 255/85R16, which is dimensionally identical to 255/80R17. It is much easier to find skinnies in your tire size. I used 255/85/16 for many years until Toyota started putting 17" wheels on my trucks.

I’m just trying to make sure if I got new wheels for 255/80/17 tires
What I would NEED to make sure first of said new wheels…tire to wheel width of course, but is there a sweet spot for higher sidewall?
I have a BMC, spc adj. control arms, bp-51, hefty front bumper, spider trax spacers(which I want gone)
So add all that up, offset n backspacing is my concern

I just need to figure out what I can/can’t work with when it comes to my setup n new wheels with this size tire

Oh, whoops. I always forget "Trail" is a model of 4Runner. I thought you were talking about something called "16" trail wheels". My bad.

Stock 2016 Trail wheels with 15mm offset would fit 255/80-17 with no rubbing.

In my experience 255/80-17 has more choices and far better in-stock availability than 255/85-16 actually. For example, Duratrac RT is not made in 255/85-16. Cooper STMaxx is usually special order in 255/85-16, while 255/80-17 is in-stock and cheaper.

Where you could input this stuff n see how it’d look(like the sheets you can request after an alignment) that would show spacing/clearance/rotation simulator
As I watch “tinkerer’s” stuff, it makes sense I just feel like I’m missing something with possible new sidewall height while airing down?…maybe?
Or how it’d all function after removing spacers

That's entirely possible. My frame of mind was still coming from 16" wheels, and when I switched to 17's, the opposite was true, but maybe now that 17's are more the standard, it has changed.

The “orange” info listed is based on calculations if I didn’t include the 1.25” on new 255/80s

What technically is the dealbreaker n why?

^255/80-17 fits on stock wheels with stock suspension. Wheel spacers aren't needed; they will in fact make fender clearance worse.

What bout with BP-51s? SPCs? No front bumper?

 

What wheels are you on? I'm running 255/80's with no spacer and no issues. Is the object to get rid of the spacers? I'm sorry if I'm too dumb and making no sense.

 

Would still clear. Hypothetically if you got the +30mm 4th gen wheels like I did, the SPC arm tip may rub on the tire. Stock 5th gen +15mm wheels would have no problems.
