It's all about the eco mode on the dash and keeping it low. O and lots of patience. Because the other drivers won't have any

Mine isn't a light it's something you can switch to on the center of the instrument cluster.
But I would assume at certain times the light is on and sometimes off. I guess on means your getting the best mpg and off not so much

That must have been coasting down hill when leaving the gas station. Or you got some folks pushing you on a flat stretch.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

When your TANK average shows that, then, and only then....can you brag. Getting that for a short trip is no big deal.

Welcome to the forum with a cool post.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if all 4runners roamed around at 27 mpg. Yoko and John would be in Heaven... if you could believe it.

That’s what I was thinking. Filled up at the top of a mountain then coasted downhill for a few miles. The tank is almost full so he didn’t drive far yet. :D

That’s correct, hence me calling it the “dreaded ECO Mode light……”
Yes I can turn mine off as well. It’s not a special switch where you get better mileage.
It’s an indicator when you are supposed to be in the ECO range. Certain high speed, that light will go off indicating you are out of the ECO range.

In the right conditions, getting great mileage out of the 4R is easy. Driving at high speeds - or in low range - or where you have a lot of stop signs/stop lights, that all kills mileage. Plus of course, running on big heavy load range E tires, and having drag-inducing crap piled up on the roof. Me, I've left my 4R relatively stock. And the corner of the world where I live there are very few paved roads but many good dirt roads that I travel at 40 - 50 mph, with no stop signs. So my 4R's mileage is pretty good. Just about to turn 21,000 miles on it, and the overall fuel mileage since I bought it new is 22.68 mpg, as calculated by an Excel spreadsheet where I enter all information. If I'm on the freeway most of the time my mileage is 18-19 mpg. If I'm on a long road trip on dirt roads through the outback then my mileage will get much better:

358 miles on this trip @ 24.9 mpg:
    trip data closeup 11-18-23.jpg

    270 miles @ 27 mpg this trip:
    P1002335r.jpg

The best mileage I've seen with the 4R - but it was only for 98 miles:
    P1002300r.jpg

These are the kind of roads that give the best fuel mileage. Road from Adel, Oregon to Gerlach Nevada. 200 miles of nothing but desert outback. No pavement, no towns, no service stations, no cell service, no stop signs. Lots of antelope, wild mustangs, and rattlesnakes though!

First thing I turned off once I got mine. If you are trying to hypermile 4Runner, you purchased the wrong Toyota.

Gas station was about 30 miles before this pic not at the top of a mountain. some down hill but also quite a bit of up hill. Wasn't being pushed altho that would be funny. And no I don't necessarily care about mpg just looked down and was taken back. By how good it was in that moment.
