What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Winter tires (Continental Xtrm with studs....only available in Canada) on a set of take-off TRD OR wheels I picked up from the dealership. Keeping everything stock or OEM except the tires.

The nice black wheels on K02s will be back on in the spring.

It's been about -3 at the most here in Kelowna for the last couple weeks and I can't bring myself to wash either of my vehicles. But we've barely had any snow this winter so can't complain too much.

 

Bought a head unit from a 2023 to retrofit it.. from lkq for 100 bucks.

Will it turn out to be what I am hoping it will be? Will find out...

What grit sand should I use before spraying out black? 400?
Hand sand, orbital, multitool, dremel?

*keeping the sanding and spray paint super simple, I want the paint to adhere obviously is all that matters. this thing is scratched to sh*t and will keep getting scratched - will do future touch ups with valance on vehicle.

 

Forgot I ordered some rear emblem overlays when I first ordered the 4R and found them in my spare bedroom lol. Figured I’d paint them the color of the valences/TRD off-road emblem today since I was off work and had nothing else to do. I followed this guy’s instructions besides the paint shown below https://www.4runners.com/threads/diy-custom-painted-emblems-or-no-more-chrome.8852/. Gonna throw them on tomorrow

it’s funny I’ve almost completed the opposite approach - deleting all Toyota silver and grey
I cut the rear valance off and started primer on the front valance

 

400 grit is usually a good starting point. 320 if you need to smoothen out deeper scratches. Just wrap around a 6" piece of 4" pine block, you dont want to press hard just 'feather' the surface then wipe down.

 

Thanks man! White and black is a classic/clean look for sure. Your 4R looks good. The silver accents compliment the mgm imo so I’m gonna keep it oem+ for awhile.

My last truck (Silverado 1500) was lifted 9” on 37s so I wanted to keep this one modest with a small leveling kit since it’s my daily and only goes on well maintained dirt roads every now and then. Might go up to 2” and 275s one day

got thirsty from sanding the silver valance and singing bad.
took 4R to trippy lookin liquor store.

 

I’m considering doing something similar to ours. All of the white 5th gen’s in our area have either all the valances and emblems blacked out or are stock. I want to do something to make it more our own. Thought about same approach or more of a charcoal grey.

My only concern is how well the paint will hold up on the overlays

 

Put on the emblem overlays last night that I painted Monday. Too dark in the garage for a pic last night so I took some this morning. The silver mica matches almost perfectly to the TRD badge/valences so I’m happy with that. Did 5 thin coats of Duplicolor clear on top to help with fading/chipping so we’ll see how long they hold up. Not bad for a small DIY project.

I had Andres make me a dark gray anodized Toyota sombrero to replace the chrome one on the front of my 4R. After installing it, the color was just weird enough that I decided to paint it a metallic silver, with, like you, several clear coats. It's been on the front of my 4R for almost 4 years, and shows no sign of any wear or color loss, so I think yours on the rear will last a very long time. This is what I got, and how it ended up:

Installed some Alpharex smoked/all red tail lights. I like them, still on the car currently but they are for sale. I have my eyes on another set that I like a little better

 

....this is proof that America is better than Canada.
