A little out of scope but I went from a Highlander (almost 500K kms) to a 4Runner. The Highlander (3.5L) was an exceptional vehicle on pavement but obviously wasn't designed/built for off-roading. It saw some mildy rough terrain, countless hours of icy/snowy conditions, and lots of highway travel. I'm really pleased with the 4Runner and am inclined to suggest its road manners, in large part owing to KDSS, with non-AT tires are darn close to the Highlander. Of course the two models don't compare off-road; the 4Runner is a beast! But the Highlander powertrain was effortlessly smooth, comfortably powerful, and economical. It also aged nicely and looked fantastic inside and out (except the cargo area due to dogs) when I parted with it. I envision dying with... not in... the 4Runner because of its solid and proven construction.

the likes of Highlanders and Rav4 are fine for mild and softroading as long as you can maintain momentum and in fact I would argue is better for dirt/gravel roads. Once you get bogged down by mud or obstacles is when the FWD biased AWD and IRS get squirrelly and the 4Runner goes "alright it's my house now"

We just added a Crown Signia for my wife. We sold her 3rd gen LE with 400k and got this for the economy and plush interior. I’d guess that it has roughly the same interior space as the RAV4, but better headroom especially in the front passenger seat.

I checked it last week. The back seat space is very decent, little more than Rav4. I was expecting the rear cargo area to be little longer to be like a station wagon but it was like a Rav4. Didn't feel much different headroom though. But it's decent. It was interesting it was parked next to a Corolla Cross with blackout badging and looked little similar outside.

The gear selector was not my taste that is like a Prius. I wish they kept the Rav4 style shifter.

Since it was dealership car not a friend's car, couldn't freely learn giving enough time and check in detail.

@4Runner75 Have you considered Subaru Outback or Forester? They are fantastic vehicles and there is a lot of aftermarket parts for the Outback as well!

To be honest, I haven't really given it a lot of thought. It will inevitably be her decision anyhow. She will be retiring in 2-3 years (she is a cardiac nurse) and I would like to trade it in on something before it gets to 100k miles. Recently, I have been thinking more that a RX350 might be the best choice, but I don't think we will be serious about doing this until some time this summer.

I like the Mazda styling a lot better than whatever the hell Toyota is doing with their crossovers these days.
