255/80R17 tire size

On mine, I am very happy with the 235/80 17's on factory wheels with no rubbing issues at all. I have about 1 inch approx. lift.
They look great and ride great.

 

I'd like to help, but I had already done the fender tuck and a very small amount of trimming so my last set of tires wouldn't rub. The few videos I have seen say 255's fit. One guy had to remove the mudflaps. The others were fine.

 

No. I mean, not that I've ever heard of. This size is awesome for not having to get a body mount chop, but it WILL rub. I've never heard from anyone who said they had zero rubbing (is that what doglover2003 meant??). The fix is super simple, but you will absolutely have to shave off a little plastic and move the front fender well forward. I'm not mechanically inclined and it was like a 15-minute job after youtube. If someone isn't rubbing with 255/80R17's, and they haven't done any cutting, then I'm guessing they've never turned their steering wheel or gone over a bump.

 

Guys, i am slow here with tires. So what are the benefits of the pizza cutters? They look like stock to me. Are they quieter than regular 33s? Or better for HWY only?

 

I believe the argument is
-They are lighter and you still get the advantages of a tall tire
-Less rolling resistance due to a smaller contact patch
-Easier to clear everything without chopping up your 4Runner
-Still offer great sidewall deformation when aired down.

Not my thing personally but I understand why it's an attractive option for a lot of people.

 

in similar boat. I have watched and read several stuff on wide vs. tall and only conclusion is there’s no consensus. Seems to me the answer is “it depends”. Tire press, terrain, driver, conditions, etc.

for me, i am about to do an Eibach level on front and leaning towards 255/75 Geolanders as I mostly need HWY and like the look of a bit taller stance. Though, getting older so hopefully I don’t regret this little extra height via climbing in and out. I figured the 75 instead of 80 would be better with the uncertainty of rubbing or not.

On the road no rubbing I’m just getting back from the shop so I don’t have enough miles on the road or off-road yet, but it will come soon as for the field on the way home no problem with the rated tire but again I need more time I like the way they look and I like the extra ground clearance

 

Those look great! I’m still curious on air down for you all. I’m heavily leaning to try and trade my wheels to a skinnier TRD pro wheel.

 

I mainly do desert trails, combination of sand and rock nothing extreme and don’t always air down but when I do, it’s very noticeable in the ride and traction… I will air down to 22 psi
Makes going through those washboard ruts, much more comfortable, and easier on the rig

 

I have gone as low as 13-15psi on my 255's in some deep snow and have had no issues. Generally stay around 20 psi on the trails

 

Got some nasty sharp edged rocks in desert
Worry about sidewalls
So I stay 20-22psi Looking forward to putting the new tires to the test

It shouldn't. 255mm is the width regardless of the wheel or aspect ratio, height.

 

Ok I simply ask because other tires get tall with more width. I wasn't sure if the same could go in this instance. Really prefer standard sizes... 33/10:50 or whatever

 

The first numer is the width in millimeters, so at least that's a constant. The rest is an equation, so you have to know the aspect ratio, second number is a percentage, and the wheel size to add to the percentage of the width. Carry the two, multiply by the square root of the hypotenuse, etc.

That method hasn’t been the standard for a couple of decades now when it comes to tires.

Metric sizing isn’t hard to get used to…

 

Did the fender mod, made cut with a Dremel.. also pushed fender liner forward … hoping to try em out in the desert tomorrow…. Will advise when I return … thanks to all that had input about the size & fender mod needed. Cuts are not perfect :/

I see more trails & camp spots being closed off with signs.. in just the last few years.. folks not cleaning up & wrong types of vehicles being run through them.

 

Reviving this a bit. Have a few options and really can't figure out the best move.
24 Pro - stock suspension (for now)
255/75/17 C Load
265/70/17 XL Load
255/80/17 E Load (but I don't want to go this route)

What are people's thoughts on a 255 C load vs 265 XL load as far as ruggedness? I have read dozens of pages over and over, and I can't decide.
The first two are basically the same height 31.9 vs 32.1 in the tires I am looking at - obviously the 80 is 33" - but that's a last ditch move because I already get shit MPG and do a lot of highway driving at 70-75
