Decided to check my coolant level…. I have had a minor leak for months. Just started truck. And radiator was under pressure. And out came the milkshake!!!

not really a daily driver but want to keep it. 187k. 1999 SR5. Treated me well for 3-4 yrs now.

Obviously radiator/hoses/thermostat….and flushing! Same for trans. Will have a shop do it. North jersey. What’s the cost estimate? Is it worth it? Is trans toasted?!

Its always always worth it to fix up a 4Runner, especially now. Maybe $600? Not sure what a radiator is to replace?

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. May have deeper issues with combustion getting into the coolant.

Is there milkshake in the tranny too? Never had the milkshake (never had an automatic 4runner) so I don't know if that's an automatic yes. But I think the tranny coolant lines are under more pressure than the cooling system, so maybe not?

On 2nd though, yeah if it ran that way it probably got in the tranny too

    Yes. It’s there.
New radiator and flushing the heater core I’m sure. I think the trans shop will be able to flush it under pressure. Of course it may fail in the future b/c of this. Keep you posted.

    Update.

truck still runs even with the radiator and trans condition. Radiator and flushing is basically an ez fix.

But Trans shop says it will need 10-20 quarts to flush the full trans clean. However it will eventually fail. 3-5 months. All seals will swell….clutch plates will be destroyed. Will needs rebuilt trans afterward.

looks for a rebuilt one. But could be costly. Looking to sell and cut my losses or maybe find a trans.

Auto trannys are cheap and plentiful. I’d keep an eye out if you like the truck
