Why do you take a 9 year-old vehicle with 159k miles to a dealer for diagnosis? Go see a couple of independent shops and get opinions. Transmission failures though rare can definitely happen. What are the symptoms? Do you have any transmission-related fault codes? When was the last time the fluid was replaced?

Some folks just don’t know, my SO’s cousin’s mother wanted to go to a Honda dealer for new tires since she thought it would be better, understandably reasoning that a Honda dealer would be superior on all counts in caring for her appliance CR-V but not knowing how standard installing tires is. Heck, the 4Runner messages state to schedule at X dealer for Y and Z service in the infotainment system so I can see folks just taking that at face value even as us enthusiasts know.

I guess the same way I wouldn’t be quite sure where to start if I had to deal with an HVAC malfunction with little time to spare.

I agree, we are not all the shit bags people make us out to be. Some of us have have spent years sharpening our craft to help our customers and provide A service to our community....well never mind, the forum has already decided our fate.
Would love to pick apart "other fields" based off of what I have heard on the forums of what other members chose to support their families with.

Most Toyota Service Master techs have their own side mechanic shop.
Only a few work with transmissions
Get friendly with tech or service reps.
Did that with my Nissan Murano back then.
The techs fixed it for me on their weekend days.

This person had shudder 30-40mph. I saw that from a their other posts. I have seen a couple instances the torque converters failed on these transmissions. This might be one of those cases. A new TC fixed the issue on the other instances-no need for new transmission.

This above poster joined, cited a failure the next day and then disappeared the following day. Too bad, since it is hard to get details on 5th gen Transmission failures.

My 2017 SR5 @48,000 miles received a new tranny after new torque converter failed to cure a "shudder" at low rpm and about 30 mph.
Much online reading points to a faulty FlexLock solenoid and valve inside the tranny's valve body.
Dealer just replaced components. Probably, if out of warranty, a tranny valve body recondition would work too.IMG_6667.png

    2020 sr5 premium 4x4 with 100k,
    No transmission fluid change,
Torque converter is being replaced due to shutter.
Just bought it, fortunately got a warranty too!

My dealer replaced the torque converter first, but the shudder/chatter was not solved because the issue actually was in the tranny valve body.
Next the dealer replaced the tranny and problem solved. Charges to Toyota $3k for torque converter then a month later another $5k for tranny. Dealers only replace components.
If not covered under warranty I would have rebuilt the valve body in the tranny.
The issue is defective FlexLock torque converter components in valve body.

On this forum, high mileage 4Runner had a transmission go out at 365K miles. Was replaced with salvaged unit, total around $2000 installed.

Mine failed at 50k miles lol. Dealership told me it would be 6k to replace. They tried to make me pay for it because i took it to a different shop to get a trans flush to see if that would help because the dealership couldn't get me in within the following few weeks. After some phone calls they replaced it under warranty so i didn't have to pay for it. The powertrain warranty ends at 60k so i'm glad i didn't blow it up after

The shop that flushed likely did not use OEM fluid, which could have been the issue.

Yea that was the reasoning from the dealer but the shop showed me that they only use OEM fluid. He told me he actually gets it straight from the dealer that i took it to lol. He might have lied to me and used the wrong fluid but regardless i got a free tranny

Very rare, probably a manufacturing issue. These transmissions can go 400k without any service.

Likely was due to incorrect fluid used.

Yea the dealer told me it was the first time they have seen it. It was definitely my fault though lol. Drove it like a jackass, donuts in deep sand and whatnot. Cooked the tranny fluid when i was trying to climb a 45 degree hill in deep sand. Learned my lesson for sure

In the unlikely event that anyone cares, I'll share the fun fact that it costs $7200 to replace the transmission on a 2018 Silverado with 85k miles.

Speaking of drain and fill: Does anyone have handy the part numbers for the 5th gen transmission drain and fill gaskets/crush washers?

    Thank you!
