Its practically a stock vehicle with minimal visual changes. Its a great looking vehicle off the lot and i much prefer the Toyota Super White vs the Limited pearl. PLUS this vehicle is basically a clone to the 2008/2009 Urban Runner which i also own and love. Basically a Limited, with Sport LSD, Sport hood, TRD Off Road Skid plates, color matched everything ect. This TRD Sport looks great in my opinion.

I dont remember how long they did the black flares on the early 4th gen, maybe just a year or two? After they changed the front and rear bumper i think in like 2005, everything started getting painted flares. I think the new flares on the Tundra, Sequoia, and Tacoma are not that great looking. The plastic has a design to it i speculate to try to make it appear distinct but the lines that appear much like a topo map just dont go well with the vehicle IMO. I personally much prefer painted flares, body colored looks way more finished, sure it costs a few bucks more but these days i dont think anybody goes to the dealer and says
"nope, no options, i want the cheapest thing you can piece together.... who needs cup holders, paint, heck just leave it primer if it saves a buck"
I think this day and age, people are splurging more and more, as you can see the numbers of F150 / F250 / F350 platinums on the road. The platinum line is +$20,000 more than the base line depending on model and you see WAY more platinums than you see base models.

 

I was actively looking for a Limited, and had already planned $7,000+ in mods to make it look like i wanted.

Color match chrome or wrap in black
Buy a hood with hood scoop and paint
Tires
Ceramic Coat

Since the TRD Sport came out, it knocked a few of those items off the list and brought down the cost of the initial mods PLUS gave me super white rather than the pearl and i DEFINITELY wanted the super white more than i wanted the pearl. The Red Rock interior color was a want, not a necessity. I had it in a 2017 and loved it but didnt keep the vehicle long (wifes idea it was hers) and i wanted it in the new one but black was a second best. I still got the electric running boards which were a MUST, and 4wd, and heated seats, and Xreas, and the appearance package with color matched everything and hood scoop, plus the 20" limited wheels.
Basically i had to add 2.5" lift up front and 1" lift in the back powder coated the stock wheels (all 5) and new tires (all 5) and pulled the emblem off the C pillar then took it to Ceramic Coat. This brought the initial build down to about $4000. The hood and paint and color match was going to be about $3400 and at the end of the day, i got what i wanted, the look i wanted, and in super white rather than pearl.

 

Then you were not the intended target segment of the TRD Sport trim. There is a reason Toyota created a trim that looks like a Limited but quite a bit cheaper.

 

I dont think anybody buys the TRD Sport because they couldnt afford the Limited.
I consider it an appearance package, it looks visually different from most any other 4Runner on the road. I think there are people that visually see the hood scoop and want "IT" rather than being critical of the vehicle its attached to. Whats its purpose, exactly nothing other than a visual cue to "sportiness" or to set it apart. When you look in the WTB ads you see people begging for a hood scoop hood willing to trade their flat hood plus cash. How often do you see someone trying to get rid of a hood scooped hood? I think its a visual cue that some really want because of the look and how it changes their vehicle. I have had quite a few vehicles with it and none of them are functional but they certainly look a lot better with it IMO.

That's your interpretation. The 2 limited owners I know don't like the fake scoops or at least indifferent. I don't care for them either but to get a rear locker you are stuck with them, at in the last few years of the 5th gen.

Perhaps there are Limited buyers who really really want a fake scoop, but the loss of the convenient full time 4wd is a big deal to people who have come to expect it on high end trim Toyota 4x4s. I would argue being able to not worry about turning on 4wd in snow and ice country is more important than a cosmetic only item.

I hate the hood scoop on my ORP and I hated it on my Tundra Pro. I also hate it on my wife's Silverado Trail Boss.

I would have been happier without the hoodscoop, valances, and badges on my 4R.

 

The scoops are annoying in my opinion beyond just dummy vanity decorations. When parked on an incline the curves can form weird horizontal spots that water pools and after a rain these spots get dirty quickly after drying, whereas on a smooth hood the water would just flow right off.

 

Thank goodness my dealer isn't doing this.

 

61k for a gas ORP now appears as a reasonable configuration.

A price this vulgar makes me reminisce about the good old days when, with some patience & negotiating skills, you could drive home in a brand new ORP with six cylinders, for just $45k. The Toyota dealer would fill your tank, and wave goodbye.

I believe that year was……six months ago.

 

4R Limited rims just doesnt look right to me on a taco

 

All those who have been saying for years here that the 5th gen is outdated should go and trade up now, because the future is here!

 

I think those are the 20 inch rims? The 17 inch OR, ORP and Pro wheels look GREAT on Tacos.

 

Do people really like fake hood scoops that much? I’d prefer if the scoop was actually functional.

 

What??? There $5K of crap added on.

 

If it had the full time 4WD I think it would be more appealing. A more affordable Limited.

 

I do see people wanting to trade their non-scoop hoods for scooped ones here and there, but I have never heard of people giving up full time 4WD just for the fake scoops, that's a new one for me.

 

Just my opinion but not sure I'd classify all of it as crap as I'd add most of it anyway, understood likely for cheaper after market. The bulk of that cost is 18in TRD wheels $1325, ARB roof rack $1710, moon roof $850 and tow tech package $400. The roof rack is likely the most over priced of them all but it's the one seen on the trail hunter model that does look pretty sweet.

 

Or an OG Trail Edition.

The old 4th Gen massive sun fade plastic, and new super gloss black XL fenders are f*kd.

 

It does let a little water in when you spray it though! Lol

$1700 for a roof rack? I’ll take two.

Wow, my 2019 TRD ORP had base MSRP of just over 40k. My how times have changed in just 6 years

 

Fender flairs or not, the OG 5th gen trail is the classiest 4runner ever. The flairs on it were perfectly in proportion, and didn’t stick out like crazy.
