Keep or replace stock Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires?

Are the stock Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires good enough for light snow and off roading? Certainly doesn't look good as some All Terrain tires but too new to just replace.

 

They are pretty awful at anything but dry pavement.

 

I yanked the Duelers off my Venture at 30k and went with 265 (OEM size) BFG KO2's. Never been happier with a tire than the KO2's. Run them on my Land Cruiser too. Duelers were quieter but looked out of place on the Venture. I also did the 1" Cornfed lift on the front only to level it out. Nothing extreme, but it looks like it's supposed to now.

But, to answer your question - are the Duelers good enough for light snow and light trail drives. Yes, but barely... They're best rolling down the interstate.

 

Up to you and what you anticipate. For light dirt, gravel, small rocks, sand, they’ll do. If you have an opportunity to test them out without going out of your way, you could try.

For snow, it’s a basic all-season so check expectations. I would drive gingerly on plowed/treated roads but probably would want to switch them out if conditions would be worse.

Maybe you can sell them once replaced.

 

Yeah...sounds like I'll have to change them out. I was looking at Toyo Open Country A/T III since that is lighter compared to Falken Wild Peaks (6 lbs heavier per tire vs 10 bls per tire). Do tire weights really make noticeable difference on how car drives?

 

I ran the Duellers on my rig for a full year, if I had to choose aside from an AT I would stick with Michelins as I did on my 3rd Gen. They'll be okay on simple (flat) trails and dusty forest service roads and the like otherwise I would not go too far off pavement with them.

1/2" of mud and you're spinning rubber, fair on-pavement in rain, snow is a crap shoot (go SLOW!)

Increased unsprung weight affects MPG and in conjunction with suspension can make for a rougher ride.

Sidewall stiffness can greatly affect handling in turns and becomes more pronounced as aspect ratio increases.

 

I chose Pirelli Scorpion AT+ . 41 lbs each compared to 39 lbs for stock tires.
So far very smooth and noise about like stock. Mine are XL rated and sturdier construction including sidewalls than SL. 3peak rated for snow. Shoulder protection for rough roads or airing down.

 

I have never had such crappy tires. At 12,000 miles mine were squealing and howling when cornering on dry pavement. Upgraded to Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek's in the summer, and have my Cooper studded tires for winter.

Studded winter tires cost me $1,000 CAD installed, which is how much my collision deductible is lol. Plus it will extend the lift of my AT's. Life is too short to use crappy tires.

 

The price is not bad also. Where did you get them?

 

To answer Jedigolf I saw walmart advertise them at $160. Sams was the $187. I asked my local family tire shop to meet the Sams price, which they did. Been using this shop for tires, balance, alignment, suspension parts etc for decades for many vehicles.

I actually ran those same Duelers for 4 years in Canada (BC mind you), but they’re terrible definitely sell them while they’re decent thread, put the money towards a new set.

I took the Dunlops off at 50 miles. I put them on Craigslist for 50% of retail new. They were gone in less than two days. Offset the cost of the Michelin's a good bit.

 

A tire store might be able to offer credit but otherwise I used craigslist. No point trying to sell them as used outright to a store since prices are not high.

 

I tried to get a quote on the rims from 1800everyrim.com and they weren't interested. I'm sure tires with 10k on them won't get much either. Maybe the most prudent decision is to use the tires to its capacity since they aren't bad to drive around town since I won't be doing much off roading. Sure, matt black TRD rims with A/T tires would look great but is it worth couple thousand (rims and tires) to look good?

 

I use them when I know I have a lot of highway miles, such as when we travel from Maine to New Orleans. If I’m going off the beaten path, I have another setup I put on. The factory tires are not great tires, but you could get a winter, maybe 2 out of them. I’m too cheap to sell em, once they are toast, I’ll put on some off road tires on the off road rims, and put a good all season travel tire on my pro rims.

 

You could sell them in the marketplace here. I would keep them for the summer and look for a spare set of used wheels and put either snow tires or AT tires on them. Between those two sets of tires you should be able to get to 100K miles before needing to spend anymore on tires.

 

The tires were the first thing changed out, right after purchasing our rig, but had specific needs. I wouldn't risk a brand new truck over $1000 shoes.

 

Decided to get a set of Falken Rubitrek A/T SL load. Great price at Tirerack and pretty much same as Wildpeaks with more on-road friendly. I think this is a great bargain now.

 

Sold mine (tires only) on FB Marketplace for $500 for the set of four with 31 miles.

I took my 4Runner up to the eastern sierras and did a 15 mile forest road drive to catch the sunset over the sierras. I got a puncture on my driver rear. I was shocked. Put the spare on and started to drive off and realized my passenger side front was also punctured. I had to limp out to the road (15 miles), ruined my rim, got towed to our rental place and had to pay $400 for a local tire shop to open up on a Sunday for a shitty new tire. Plus a new rim once back in San Diego.

The good news was this gave me a ton of ammo to sell to the wife we needed better tires.

 

My Dunflops only lasted 12,000 mi. until they wore out because my old commute was high speed mountain driving.
We bought the 4R new in the middle of winter so we were glad to get them replaced with Michelin's that we got 50,000 mi. from.

 

Depends on your priorities. Look at the Tire Rack ratings...they are average at best, but it looks like they are better than the Dunlops that came on my 4R that were rated Poor for winter. They will be fine for light snow and light offloading for sure. If I had another new 4Runner I would not live with average tires for years to save a few bucks. Love my Michelin Defenders but you won't If you prioritize atyling.
