Remote start stopped working

Hey everyone,
I have a 2024 4Runner TRD Pro with the factory remote start. I use the remote start occasionally (from the fob) and it has generally worked ok. However, last week it just ... stopped working. No matter how many times I try, I can't get it to trigger.

Has anyone experienced this? Any tips or suggestions on what could be wrong? I have seen some posts on Reddit and other places mention that its unreliable, but nobody seems to have a fix for it.

 

Clearly this is a warranty problem. Take it to the dealer and let them figure it out.

 

Same thing happened to my 2020 limited

Install the Toyota app, you have to agree to the free 10 years subscription of the Toyota service (forgot the exact name) and agree to data sharing with Toyota, and it will work again from the Fob....

 

Are you sure about that? I never did that before and it worked for about 10 months just fine even without that.

 

Mine works, but I also have the app. It's been great having the remote start. This morning it was 14° with a feel like temperature of 7°.

 

100% I used my remote for 4 years no issues and I had to do that lately as it stopped suddenly like yours....

You do not need the app after you agree......

The sub is called "service connect"...

I remember I wanted to start my truck remotely at airport parking when I was back from vacation in airport and app told me that function is disabled after I think 5 days if vehicle was not running. So I think if you didn't use you truck in few days keyfob remote start might not work as well until you start vehicle manually. Another thing is maybe battery in keyfob got depleted enough to make signal weak for remote start. But yes, since it's a new truck you can ask dealer to look at it, maybe it need new firmware or some settings got reset somehow.

 

Did you happen to adjust any of the settings on the remote? That often seems to disable the remote's ability to lock/unlock the doors.

 

We were in The Keys for 8 days before Christmas, when we landed it was 25° , I used the app to start my truck, no problems. Take it to the dealer, it's under warranty.

 

i did that, but it still doesnt. i did get all my information back on the app tho

 

The Pro version got the remote start from the fob (rather than from the app)?

I'd like to have that on my ORP.

 

Post 2019.. even the fob goes through the same module as the app.. hence, the need to allow data sharing with Toyota otherwise the fob would not work..

Interesting. My '22 ORP (Canadian) has factory fob remote start. I have no app on my cell no service connect or data sharing. Got to get lock button timing right though. Press, press, hold. It's a little finicky that way. Otherwise no issues. Subscription based features are a no go for me. If it's built with it. It needs to work period.

My 2022 limited can remote start with fob only. App is not set up on mine.

 

No kidding, called Off Road PREMIUM but no app or fob function to remote start.

 

Man I’m happy I have a 2016, no app, and never returned to the dealer LOL
And I thought I was quite inconvenienced this week solely cuz my key fob battery is dying haha

 

Same here. No app for 2019, and don't miss it for a second.

 

I simply unlock and lock the whole truck with the rear hatch key slot, it’s one of the fancy features that sold me lol. I’m a simple man. I’ll Replace the fob battery, one day.

 

Do the 21's have this same option? I downloaded the app at one time after purchase and just quit messing w/ it. Too much BS for just one feature in my opinion. Seats heat up fast enough for the wife...

I agree with you.. however, it is the data age.... and if you want to have technical gimmicks you have to do that sometimes..

I agree that the remote fob should have nothing with the external system, but unfortunately it does.....

My friends 4Runner remote start stopped working as well. He removed the glovebox to get to the module, he unplugged it and replug, no issues ever since. It may be a simple solution as that.

 

I have a 2023 Limited (purchase in Nov 2022) and I recently lost the remote start too. It worked even after I stopped paying for the Vehicle tracking subscription. In November 2024 I lost all access to my remotes, I had to plug a OBD2 dongle to reconnect my 2 remotes. I was able to unlock the doors by touch but not with the key fob buttons, somehow the key fob got turned off. I bought Vehicle tracking subscription for a month for a 3k miles road trip but I just noticed today that my remote start does not work anymore... really weird.

 

I had that done but I turned off the location tracking to Never... I switched it back to when I use it and it restarted working all the sudden.

 

I tried using the remote starter for the first time this week and it didn’t work. Dealer is nearby so I stopped by.

Guy just went into my Toyota app and I think he unselected/reselected the remote start service. It magically started working. He said alot of them are finicky and glitch all the time, even on the newer models.

Really hate this Toyota connect bullshit. I purposely bought a 4Runner so I don’t deal with tech nonsense. Hope it doesn’t become a recurring issue or I’m just gonna throw in an aftermarket one down the road.

Zero chance I’m paying a subscription for using a feature in my car.

 

What's the method of locking/unlocking with with the rear hatch?
