Is a used 2023 ORP with 20k miles worth $50k?!

I don't know, paid less than that for my new '23 ORP. BUT considering shrinking inventories... you'll be the one that determines if there's value there for you. I can probably turn around and sell my ORP now and get 10k+ more than what I paid for it. But I won't
Keeping it forever.

 

I thought about doing this, then I ran the number and it didn't make sense for me. My ride is mostly stock, so I can get 20 - 21MPG (tank average!). If I paid cash for a car that sips gas plus insurance, it would take 4 - 5 years to recoup that money.

I figure a 2nd car+insurance+gas for that car would be about: $8000 - 9000 Currently I pay between $40 - $70 per week for a full tank of gas. That's $2k - $3,200 per year just for gas for my 4Runner. Basically I'd spend three years worth of gas buying a 2nd vehicle that sips gas.

In the long run, it doesn't work for me.

 

Having a mini van is a right of passage when you have kids. I had 2 mini vans in my lifetime. 2nd van would load up with 2 kids, my wife and haul a double jetski trailer from
San Diego to Lauglin Nevada. Nothing like a cold beer at 8:00am on the water!
I'm surprised the Dodge mini van didn't fold in half with all the shit I'd load up!

 

your math is fuzzy, if you have a commuter then you won't be spending that 3k a year on gas since you are not driving both it and the 4R for commuting, but half that. After three years you only spent net 4500 on the car after factoring in gas price offset alone.

Then consider the cost on tires, maintenance, etc that are all much cheaper on a FWD small car per mile compared to the 4Runner, and less depreciation from less miles piled on the 4R. It all adds up.

 

Yeah it doesn’t work out anymore. The cost of a decent fuel efficient vehicle is just too damn expensive.

My neighbors sold their car to Carmax. I could contact them, they would bring a check and pick up my truck. That's how it works. My other neighbor sold their house last month for $2.4 million, mine is a little bigger than theirs, so my house is actually worth at least $2 million.

 

Millions of Americans buy a car for less than 5k and drive them for years with no problems. the idea that one needs to spend 9k for a reliable commuter is not the case. ~2010 Camrys with ~100k can be had for 5-6k all day long and run for another 200k with regular maintenance.

I realize we are on a forum where people frequently buy a 50k SUV (designed to survive conditions of UNHCR areas of operation) just to commute to their office job with the aspiration of driving on a dirt road to camping once a year, but we are only a small cross section of society.

 

We have a differing opinion on what decent is. I’m not interested in spending my time commuting in a clapped out econobox.

 

So money does matter, after all. LOL.

And for some, a mid 2000s Camry or Avalon is a far better interior and more comfortable to commute in than a 4Runner, soft touch material everywhere, every control is designed to be operated without taking one's eyes off the road. My parents' 2006 Camry is a solid 35mpg car when you let it cruise at speed limit.

But hey, when you are not a english PHD student and actually making money, it could be nice to do all your commute in a 4Runner.

 

Even the English student wants something better than a 20 year old Camry.

The key variable here is how far your commute is. It might pay off eventually for a long distance commuter but likely never will for a short commute.

Even though I agree with you, I drive my in laws Camry once in a great while, and hate driving it. It’s too small for me, and it has seen better days, with over 200k on it.

 

I turned my daughter away from the new Honda Trail sport.
Our family 20 year old 2004 Pilot was great, but it was built brfore Variable Cylinder Managment where half the cylinders are shut down when cruising. That engineering ruined their V6. Driven by Fed Regs no doubt.
Got 240,000 miles and sold to a mechanic.

 

True but the longer the commute the nicer the car you’re going to want to be in.

 

I'll jump in - my family has 1 car payment but 3 vehicles. My wife works in the medical field so we need 4wd. I highly recommend getting a used 4runner. I believe the prices for the 5th gen will dip when the new ones come out & then go back up once the minor issues of the 6th gen hit. I do believe right now will be the highest prices on the 4runner since the big used car boom a few years ago.

I bought my 4runner during that crazy time because we just had a baby. I wasn't going to let them ride around in the corolla anymore. It only has 2 air bags and has 230k miles. The taco is for snow commutes, but here in Denver 2 vehicles with 4wd is important. My 2015 inferno was $38k with 70k miles. It is a pro but my interest rate is only 3.6%. I saw the writing on the wall and bought it because I hear whispers about rates increasing drastically. I did want a pre TSS, no sunroof pro - so in my situation, I was very picky. If you do not have a 4wd vehicle in the family, then buying the 4runner is a must.

2008 corolla. work daily. paid off
2013 taco. snow daily. paid off
2015 4runner. wife and kid daily. not paid off

 

In less than 1 month this truck had a price cut of $22,580.

 

Off Road Premium or Off Road Pro. Have not figured out ORP. Premium NO, Pro probably.

 

ORP stands for Off Road Premium.

The Pro model is referenced as TRD Pro.

 

Smiles per mile is hard to put a number on, but would always take the nicer vehicle on long road trips. If I had to commute over 100 miles per day for work, then a truck would be out unfortunately for me. Probably settle for a hybrid highlander or similar ..something decent as the keep a beater and truck combo doesn't work for me and besides life is too short already.

 

Since I have a '23 TRD ORP with 20K miles I hope that number is accurate!

 

Ha, my 23 ORP only has 5500 miles on it (I work from home). Not parting with my truck though, but I will definitely use this as another example to my better half as to why I bought mine when I did.

 

I keep telling my spouse how smart I am for her buying me the last of it's kind 2024 4Runner V6.
So far so good! She likes to tool around the neighborhood in it while her Tesla is parked in the garage.

 

That's about what I paid for my 2024 ORP and why I bought new, over used. The used prices were very close to new, and now that there are few if any remaining 2024 models on the lots, you'll start seeing the prices rise for used 5th gens for the near future.

I have always bought new cars, not necessarily smary but that's what I've done. When buying, I do my homework first, then head to (usually) "my" dealer where I've done business before and have relationships, though with my first 4Runner ('23 ORP) it was not "my" dealership (bought 1/2023). I will haggle, in fact I haggled with the salesman for hours as they started out at $10K over sticker (total BS for suckers), and hours later I had worked it way down, then I finally said OK, my final offer is $2,000 over sticker, take it or leave it. (Salesman was actually a very professional guy and though a lot of haggling was needed. They took it. And I am pretty sure I could have bought elsewhere for sticker (no premium), but you know what? At that point, the lousy $2K I might have overpaid (but maybe not) wasn't worth driving all over town and haggling with 10 more dealers. They had exactly what I wanted (ORP, Lunar, other (most) options, and truthfully I wanted to just buy it and get on with life. As long as I know I am in a reasonable ballpark of the market and more or less what I could buy for elsewhere, life is too short to go through a bunch of extended agony over a lousy $2K on a $50K car.

 

I just bought a 2023 ORP w/52,000 miles (drove it for a year for work on highways), for $42k, $45k out the door.... There were a few upgrades like Pro Exhaust, heated steering wheel and TRD wheels but otherwise standard ORP ($51k MSRP). Pretty middle of the road price... BUT they last forever and I WANTED a recent year that I can trade up with some value left in 5-6 years.

I don't think there are any smoking deals out there anymore and as long as there aren't problems with your truck, it'll last you as long as you want to drive it. I bought my last one in 2010 (a Limited) for $25k with 40,000 miles. I drove it until now... still runs so well with nearly 300,000 miles.

The only downside is MPG and on the comfort side is no dual climate.

That's just my opinion though!
