Diode Dynamics Foglight Backlight Wiring

I'm installing a pair of Diode Dynamics Elite foglights on a 2022 OR without auto headlights and with halogen high beams that are shared with the DRL. My understanding is that this model/configuration uses PWM to reduce voltage of the high beam to use as the DRL and that will produce flickering in the foglight backlight if I wire into that circuit. First off is that true? ...and if so, what are y'all wiring into to get the best use of the backlight?

 

I thought the 22 had led high/low headlights and the lights that were previously the high beams , 2014-2019, are now the drl's.

 

It depends on the trim. The TRD Off Road trim has LED headlights, but a shared halogen bulb for DRL/High beams in 2022.

 

You are correct. 2021 was the weird transition year with Limited and Pro getting bi-LEDs with a series wired halogen DRL while all the other trims got LED lows with halogen PWM dimmed DRLs combined with the high beam. 2022-2024 all trims got bi-LEDs with series wired halogens for DRLs. @ivancook needs to wire the DRLs in parallel and then tap them for the SS3 backlights

 

So if ivancook has a 22, his headlights are bi-leds? That would make the drl's on their own circuit needing the extra cable to give both bulbs 12 volts. I have an extra cable for that option if he needs one.

 

I think he might be off by a year. Mine is a 2022 TRD Off Road and has the combined halogen DRL / High Beam. I don't really use the DRLs so was wondering if it might be an option to wire the fog backlight into the headlight circuit. That way when the headlights are on and the fogs are off, they would be backlight. I just don't know what that would do when the fogs are on. Would the backlight and the fog light be on? Just mainly curious what others with the same year/trim have done with that backlight feature.

 

I am not. If your vehicle is unmodified as far as wiring to the headlights, it’s either not a 2022 or it’s not wired the way you are claiming (combined DRL and high beam). From the 2022 press release:

I have backlit fog lights wired to be on when the DRLs are on or when low beams are on. If you turn the fog main beam on, it overrides the backlight. Mine is a 2021 Limited so it’s wired the same as 2022-2024

 

Weird. Only thing I can think of is that the article is wrong. Check out page 17 here from the 2022 brochure. This aligns with what I see on my 4Runner.

Only thing you can think of is Toyota corporate is wrong about their own vehicle? Really? You do you man but you’ll be chasing the wrong way to wire them if you don’t accept that you are incorrect. Brochures aren’t the best to tell you specific features. Check any of the 2021-2024 brochures and they all list “LED headlights” without mentioning high beams or low beams specifically

 

The easiest way to put this to rest is to go out, turn the headlights on, take a picture with low beams and then high beams, post them when you're done.

 

I couldn't be happier to report back that I was WRONG! I do have LED high/low headlights. Does this mean that I just tap into the DRL wires here? If so, which wires? I see Red - Black - Black/White on one and Blue - Black - Black/White on the other.

 

If you want to utilize the drl's you will need a harness. Search it, their are plenty of posts out there. If you need the harness, I have an extra.

 

Is that what most people do with the bi-LED models, or is there a more common spot to tap into?

 

Depends on when you want the backlights on. The 3 wire connector you sent a pic of is low +, high +, and ground. Like I said, I have my backlights working with the DRLs and low beams so they are always on. If you do the common series to parallel mod that Dave is talking about, they’ll only be on when the DRLs are on. Happy to help but need an idea of when you want them on

I really don't use my DRLs, so it would be good to have them backlit with my low beams, so always on. Basically, I think it would be best that they are backlit unless the fogs are on or the lights are off. Also, I have the Elites and not the SS3 in case that matters. I'm guessing backlight is the same.

I'm looking to do something similar but, only want the back-lite on when the parking lights are on. Same as the picture I found. Which wire would I need to tap into. I'm in a 21 pro if that changes anything. Thanks in advance for any help

 

I’d have to take a look at wiring diagrams again but I know yellow and blue are turn signal positive and the white/black wire is ground. So whatever color the third wire is going to each turn signal/parking bulb would be the parking light positive. That would be the one to tap. It’ll be 12V as well so no additional harnesses needed
