I have had my 2018 TRD Pro 4runner for about 7 months now. Bought it brand new. It's been awesome, except for recently. For the last couple weeks now, and mainly when I fill up with gas, which I use 91 octane, that after I shut it off and I hear a gulping sound for a few seconds. It sounds like I am holding a jug upside down and empting water out of it. I bring it to the dealership and of coarse it doesn't duplicate it so they can't pin point what is or might be going on. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it is or what I can do to fix it? Is it something major that I should be worried about? It's not over heating or acting funny. Really confused. Thanks.

I think it's normal. You should fill it up one time when it's running. Open the filler door, take off the cap, and it sounds a continuous fart.

Lol, now that's funny. See I am concerned because I have put 10k miles on it and never heard it before. Thought it was the washer fluid, because it wasn't holding any but it wasn't that and still don't know what it is.

Maybe you just didn't notice it before. Yeah this is the first vehicle i have owned that has made any noise when I fill it up. Not sure why

Thanks. It does it after I fill up and then drive some where, when I turn it off is when it does it, and it doesn't do it all the time. I have never, especially a new one make any sounds like this when major problems didn't come shortly after.

Probably an air bubble, try wheeling it and get it on its side, need to slosh it around

Just checking: do you continue pumping or "topping off" your tank after the pump clicks itself off?

Oh, and you don't need to run 91.

Anything bad about 91? I've been using 87 , but went to Costco the last 2 fill ups and got 91.

No, once the pump clicks off that's when I stop. I have heard that it might be the fuel pump evaporator that I am hearing, could this be possible?

No, nothing bad. The only thing octane does is make your gasoline more resistant to early-ignition (knocking or pinging). Your engine can run more ignition advance with higher octane, which can increase power (a very small amount in naturally-aspirated engines). Some people tend to think that premium gas is "cleaner" or "better" than 87, but this isn't the case at all. All gasoline is held to very stringent standards. Premium just has more octane additive.

Does this happen while you are moving or still? I can hear the gas move around in the tank while driving around a corner, it's a very audible GLUG GLUG.

No, only when I pull in and turn it completely off, and it will only do it a couple times or when I drive enough to get some fuel out of the tank. When the tank isn't all the way full you can't hear it at all.

I'm confused. Is the sound coming from the gas tank? Or the engine bay?

To me it's coming from the rear driver side, haven't really been able to pin point it because when it does it I never have anyone available to help.

As you're driving, move your torso/head over the center console and see what you hear. Sounds are deceiving.

From talking to a couple different dealers, they are both confident that it's the purge system that Toyota has put in the newer vehicles and from what I have gathered from other Toyota enthusiasts, that sounds like what it's going to be. Like I said it's running great, nothing came up on the 10k inspection, so I guess I will roll down road with it and see what happens. Thanks to everyone for helping me get above the storm, hopefully it never comes.

Well, after completely emptying the gas tank and refilling it, it is still making this gulping sound. So I will be taking it in on Tuesday and hopefully they can duplicate it and fix whatever is wrong with it if there is anything wrong with it. I will post an update just in case it happens to any of your 4runners.

You’re not alone; my 2016 4RTP has been doing it since I purchased it and it has almost 39,000 miles on it… never top it off and occasionally fill up with 93 oct… ask dealer about it around 10,000 miles a they were clueless!

Thanks, glad I am not the only one. A dealership I talked to yesterday said it was the pump sending gas back up the neck and the sound was the gas going back down into the tank, kind of make sense but then raises some other questions. Thanks again.
