Anyone know of any open off-road areas/trails in Central Maryland or SE West Virginia?

@BoomerSooner I've been looking for places in the same area to go wheeling (I live in Northern VA). That place looks pretty good but looking at their website, it looks like they're only open during those two weekends?? Or am I wrong, are those just events they're hosting and they are open other than that as well?

There are also some other trails further down in VA in the George Washington National Forest, but unfortunately those are closed for now.

I know a spot in Loudoun. On Keys Gap Mountain. My friend lives there. And when you drive way back on the mountain the gravel stops and it’s rough terrain still lots for sale....Its on the WVa/Appalachian Trail line..

This was a nice drive we did this past Sunday thru Jefferson National Forest. I got to the road off 220 around Daleville. You can also come in from 311 near New Castle. There were 6 or 8 small water crossings. Nothing difficult. Fun place to explore. Lots of side trails we did not do, but hopefully will get back to when we have more time.

Yep. It's about 1 hour 45 minutes from me. But I had to be up there so we took advantage of it. Outside of the Uwharrie National Forest any thing for us is a hike.

So....does your friend still live there, and is it legal/open to the public? Would certainly be interested in details -- feel free to send me a message if you are comfortable enough to share but not comfortable enough to post about it.

Im sure he past away. I got permission to hunt it, went all the way there. Saw dead deer all over on the way. Then his girlfriend said no. So, I have not gone back. He was in the construction crew at my fiber company. $8 dollars a hour!

I tagged this buck there. I had the pelt tanned and gave it to him. He wanted me to move into a shack there. Its like you die in winter, tree crushed the neighbor's house!

Black Powder! Its a shotgun county! Back then you could use real deer pee and I made a mock scrape the week before the opener.

I would recommend heading there. We're a little more active. Also3Pooches version 3.5 | Page 619 | Tacoma World is the peanut gallery for the group.

There's not a whole lot around, but there are a few locations. We did Windrock, TN in April (a week-long trip) and a couple of us are headed to a park out near Winchester, VA (it's only open for events). Locally, it's the Flagpole area and a few other milder trails. But all of them are at least an hour away from NoVA.

I would also highly recommend a trial subscription to OnX Off-road. They have listings of local trails with ratings and what-not. It's how I've found a few short places to run a trail or two.

    Thanks!

I have OnX and have used it to get in over my head last year.

    Long story…

I’m definitely enjoying the unpaved roads around Loudoun. While it’s not “proper” off-roading, it certainly beats getting tailgated by someone who is rushing to visit as many wineries as possible in a day.
