    Hey everyone,
I'm new to this forum, but have been reading tons of great advice/comments on here from you all, so I thought I'd ask for some advice on a purchase that is upcoming for me.

I'm trying to decide between a few 4runners:

    1. A co-worker of mine is selling his 2014, SR5, 2wd, for 22K. He bought in new and it now has just over 78,000 miles on it.

    2. A 2007, Limited, 2wd for sale, asking price is $13,500. Just over 124,000 miles on it, single owner. At a local, well-respected dealership.

    3. Another 2007, Limited, charcoal gray color, 82,000 miles on it, asking price is 14,000 but with a dealership that has lots of "shady" reviews that claim dirty used car salesman tricks and tons of hidden fees. It almost seems to good to be true.

    4. A 2009 4runner with just over 110,000 miles on it, asking price is $15,000 or so, auto check says it's been in one accident, but doesn't give any details.

I admit that 15K or less asking price is much more in my price range, but would it be a better long-term investment to go with my co-worker's newer 2014?

Thanks for any input or advice you all have.

I would buy the newest with the least amount of miles BUT, I would never buy a 2wd 4Runner. That is a hard one, I guess the best advice I can give is buy within your budget.

I would get the newest and least miles that I could afford without putting myself in a financial bind, but like krmatp said, I would not buy a 2wd. There are other SUV/crossovers that cost less, ride better, have more power, more room, more features, get better mileage, etc. than a frame on 4 Runner with high ground clearance and a truck stance and ride.

My wife's Highlander Limited is a nicer vehicle than my 4 Runner and is just a capable as a 2wd 4 Runner would be, but opinions vary.

If you have to deal with snow you do not want 2WD.

EXACTLY what Bill said. There is very little reason to get yourself a 2Runner.

    Hey Everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I live in an area that rarely, ever sees snow. It might snow an inch or two once every 3 to 4 years and I don't really go off road very much.

I get the whole idea of "why would you want a 2wd" and all that, but I like the 4 runner for other reasons than off-roading. I'm not going to drive a Highlander because, quite honestly, I see that as more of a chick/woman vehicle.

***I just got a message that the 2007 Limited with 124K miles just sold today while I'm at work.....

Before making a final decision on a used vehicle, I think it would be good to
    • understand the common issues particular to that model
    • spend the money on a reputable shop for them to give a thorough inspection

They're all minivans dude. Most people walking down the street today would be hard pressed to see the difference between a crossover and an SUV these days anyway. I'd hate for you to make the wrong decision based on some weird masculinity hangup and besides, plenty of women drive 4Runners too (soccer moms are our biggest demographic). The men I know pick the correct tool for the job.

Another one of these 4Runners on the list sold today. That makes two sold today just while I was at work. Man, those things go fast, don't they?

    1. Co-worker friend of mine still has the 2014 SR5 with 78,000 miles, 2WD and is asking about $21K (Nautical Blue color)
    2. The 2009 4WD 4runner with just over 110,000 miles on it, asking price is $15,000 or so, auto check says it's been in one accident, but doesn't give any details.
    3. Found a 2010 4WD Trail Edition with 120,000 miles asking just over 18K.

Once again, yes I'd prefer the 4WD, but I could live with the RWD since I live in a place that only sees a few flakes of snow once every 3 or 4 years.

Out of the 3 I'd pick the 2014 for your use case. Newest (although still not great) head unit that will let you use Bluetooth. No point in getting the 4th gen unless it has a V8 and you want one (by the way, if it does have the 4.7 you should change the timing belt. The 4.0 V6 has a chain for less maintenance). Also I'd be weary about accidents with zero detail attached. The Trail has gizmos you'll never use but is otherwise the exact same truck as the SR5. Good luck!

Must admit I opted for the 4Runner before the Highlander for the same reason! The Highlander definitely looks more like a "common" SUV or "Station Wagon." But I liked the more "trucky" higher stance and truck like performance. Highlander's are quite nice inside no denying that.

Thanks....tomorrow at lunch, I'm going to take his 4Runner for a little drive to test it out. I'm not wild about that blue color, but, it has relatively low miles at just over 78K and I know that he bought it new and has taken great care of it. He just wants to upgrade to a Sequoia since he has small kids and another one on the way.

If it was me; I would go with the 2010 trail 4runner. But, I would use the 4wd. We also rarely see snow here, but its nice to know that when it does, I'm getting home. 120000 miles doesn't bother me. Mainly because my tacoma with the same 4.0 v6 has over 300000 miles on it.

If you are not going to use the 4wd then, go with the cowork's
