Big crack in mine need to get a replacement. Never had to do it yet in all my years of driving. State Farm only covers it under my comprehensive plan which has a $500 deductible so I am probably just going to pay out of pocket. Got a quote from Safelite for a little less than $400. My question is am I going to get a shitty quality windshield or am I worrying too much? OEM installed from the stealership is $1400! Will the aftermarket replacement have the heaters along the bottom like the OEM windshield?

Sorry for stating the obvious, but did you call Safelite? I've never seen Safelite replace a windshield and lose functionality. For example, if you have a HUD, Adaptive cruise, ect. that is used through the windshield, all functionality continues from my experience.

Gotcha. Yeah I don't specifically know about the heating elements for the 4Runner, but other vehicles retain all other windshield functionality so you should be good. Do report back as I'm curious myself. I have a few chip fixes that may need replacing eventually.

For around $100- more, will your insurance cover the replacement cost for original equipment?

    Is plasti-dip a mod?!
The safelite glass is ok, but look very carefully if they install. I had one replaced in my car, and they created a small scratch in the paint where the windshield sits, it has created a nice rust bubble under the paint. I’ve since sanded out the rust and used touch up paint for protection, but eventually I’m going to get the windshield replaced again (more chips) and get the roof properly repaired and repainted too.

having mine changed tomorrow, state farm says my deducible is only $100 so I called and asked safelite to use OEM glass they said no problem. They called today to confirm the appointment and then told me that I would be paying the $100 for insurance and the difference from their glass to OEM, an additional $350. I'm just going with their glass, it has a lifetime warranty on defects and I can change this thing 4 times for the cost of OEM. Stupid rock on the freeway...:annoyed:

My apologies I forgot to updated this thread. I had my done by Safelite a few weeks ago. No complaints, just went with their brand of glass. Seemed fine to me, no issues at all before I traded in the rig. Their customer service and communication was great.

Mine just got nailed also. But it is cracked at the bottom on the passenger side so I have not even called the insurance company. Also I have front windshield ceramic tint on there so that would be another $150 plus tax expense to get it replaced. UGH!

My daughter had a jeep windshield replaced like a year ago and wanted "original replacement" because hers had like a little jeep emblem on it or something. She call insurance and told them that and wanted to make sure it was OEM and it was. Not your insurance company but as stated it might be a nominal cost for original. I think you can fight them not wanting to use OEM or try another glass company. My insurance recommends but can't MAKE me go to certain people.

Well for the piece of mind might be worth it I don't really know or have any experience... Thinking maybe the install is more important that the actual glass though.

I’ve had the aftermarket one for a bit now and no issues although i think there is less of the black sunscreen at the top than the original had

With how easy the OEM one cracked on me I may just try the other just to see if it holds up better.

My T4R will need a replacement eventually, but I wanted to bring this up for the folks here. My wife had a rock crack the windshield in her 535xd and we went with OEM and had BMW do the work. My deductible was still the same, I just needed to ask to have it replaced with OEM glass at BMW. They said no problem. The BMW was a $1800 job, heads up display, wiper sensor and the other Connected Drive thing. Anyways I didn't want Safellite doing the job on my $85k car and BMW gave me loaner. I had to pay out of pocket then get reimbursed. OEM stuff is usually better and BMW or Toyota will stand behind their work. I never second guessed the work at all. All BMW just like my Toyota. I wouldn't want to lose the tinted strip across the top so that would steer me towards OEM.

the 4runner windshields do crack easy..just a small ding and temp changes/shock it will crack..
on other older vehicles glass is thicker stronger. many have had these new models crack .
some have used safe lite glass and they thought stronger..
I had my 1996 sedan windshield OEM replaced by safe lite and that windshield did look good.

BMW windshields well those are not aftermarket available as those windshields have all sorts of odd ball electrical sensors in them not gonna work so insurance co will have to agree to install those BMW parts unless the scrap yard has one LOL...

Hmmm are you sure the dealer physically did it? Lots of times for things like this they have a glass company or other specialty services come to them and do it at their facility.

This is interesting. I got a stone chip about 3 weeks into owning mine. I got quoted $800+ for OEM glass through Abra, but opted to get a patch job and hope it holds up.

I still have not gotten mine replaced. The crack has now migrated into the wiper de-icer area. I turned that on a few weeks ago and started smelling electronics burning. The windshield was smoking and the smoke was getting into the cabin. So now I can't use that anymore. The area where the crack is on the de-icer is completely destroyed with glass just crumbling in that area. I sealed off the crack/crumbling from the outside with electrical tape so hopefully that stops any water from getting in until I can get the windshield replaced. :frustrated:

I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me on the day I picked it up. I truly believe the windshields use inferior glass.

I had mine for a while and got a chip down lower left and it’s still there. Then, on a trip back from Charleston one day a big ass rock got kicked up and smacked the upper part of the windshield right at the roof line. Started a crack but it was right in my line of sight and I didn’t notice until my buddy said something about it. If I move my head to the left or right I can see it but it’s smack dab right in my line of sight and I can’t see it. It hasn’t expanded so I’m not too worried about it now

I think its the nature of our windshields- they are somewhat upright- far less sloping than other vehicles.

I bet FJ Cruisers have the same challenges.
