5th gen Prices are f***ing out of hand

I paid $3000 over msrp back in 2018 for my TRD Pro. No regrets since that is the color and model I wanted. Didn’t want to start out with an ORP, which I drove and didn’t like the suspension, tires and wheels, skid plate, grille, etc. It would have cost me at least $3000 to upgrade the ORP. Drove it with the stock Pro suspension and Pro wheels for 4 years before upgrading.
I keep my Toyota 4WD trucks for a long time. I have had 4 over the last 42 years as they are my daily drivers. Get what you want and obviously what you can afford. I bought all of them new. Had my 3rd gen for nearly 18 years before buying my current 2018 Pro.
All Japanese made. These 4Runners are keepers. Think about the cost of the other SUV’s for sale and how expensive they are. And how much less reliable, poorly made with less cargo area, and in most cases less capable off road compared to the 4Runner. What are better options for a quality 4WD SUV for less money?

 

OK, well, I do not profess to know just how much good that turbo will actually do under normal driving conditions. By normal, I mean are you going to even realize any benefit from it when just accelerating normally, like say normally or “gently” taking off from a stop sign or stop light?

Or, is the driver going to have to “hammer” the gas pedal all the time and rev the engine way up all the time to realize any use or benefit out of the turbo? I have no experience owning or driving a small displacement turbo-charged gasoline powered engine in an automotive application.

It seems to me that a turbo has to be kept “revved up” at higher engine RPMs at all times to get any useful boost use out of it.

But I bet these sixth gen T4Rs are going up be real “repair shop queens” compared to our trusty fifth gens. Time will tell I guess.

The way I drive, I don’t need a dam turbo. The V-6 has plenty of zip for me. I don’t need to “jack rabbit start” or drag race anyone from a stop light. And I’m running empty (no payload) most of the time any way. Sometimes wifey is with me as a wee bit of payload, lol. And I’m not pulling a trailer.

 

Actually, the turbo is more beneficial at lower RPM's in this case. The new engine makes peak torque at 1700 RPM's, as opposed to 4400 with the 4.0 V6. The extra power is actually right where you'd want it in a truck.

For the average driver who doesn't tow, the difference in power might be negligible. But, if you tow anything heavy, the new engine should be a huge improvement over the V6.

I thought the new Tacoma felt more powerful than my 4Runner, even without driving aggressively. I'd recommend driving one before judging it.

 

One day, a few years back, as I was going to lunch, I saw a 1968 corvette parked in front of the restaurant. I couldn’t help myself and dropped a note on the windshield “if you ever want to sell this car call me on this number”. I figured not very intrusive. Well a few months went by and I forgot about it until the phone rang as the owner had kept my note. He told me he had to sell the corvette as his wife was having another baby and they needed a mini van. I bought the car the same day, 427-400hp tripower convertible. Just a little food for thought if you see a car you really want.

 

On the other hand, the 1GR was itself tuned to burn as little fuel at lower RPMs and emit as little as possible to stay on the market as long as possible without resorting to direct injection and turbo charging.

If it wasn't for the increasingly strict fuel economy and emissions targets in the 2010s, the 4.7L v8 would still be an option in the 5th gen for those who do tow a lot.

 

I had the 2UZ in my '03, and it was fabulous! Oodles of torque, right from idle. I'd love to have that torque in my '19.

 

OK, thanks for the intel Thatbassguy. I’m not that up on the engineering details of these small gas turbo engines. Maybe these turbos aren’t that huge in size / diameter or something. I was thinking in terms of there perhaps being a lot of “turbo lag”- that it would take a lot of exhaust force (hammering the gas pedal all the time) to get the turbo spinning up to speed before they kick in, or something like that. Maybe they’ve designed a lot of the turbo lag out of the design these days.

As you suggest, I guess a test drive of this turboed engine will be in order, even if it’s in a Tacoma. I still maintain that I won’t be tempted to purchase the new upcoming T4R. Thanks again for your reply.

 

At this point, I'm not interested in the 6th gen 4Runner, if I'm being honest. Maybe I'll change my mind once I see one in person, but I'm just not loving the design at this point.

 

I thought max torque was pretty similar. Unless you're talking about the hybrid.

 

It appears I mistakenly assumed that the vehicle stability control was part of TSS. According to Toyota, TSS includes the features listed. It's the VSC that helps when black ice forms on the highway. So noted.

 

Save your dislike for Toyota and write your congress person instead. Toyota didn't do all this for fun, it was all to comply with federal and CARB emissions and CAFE regulations. Nissan doesn't sell enough Frontiers to ding their CAFE average to hurt badly enough to change just yet, but they will too in a few years.

Why do you think Chrysler dropped the Hemi in their cars and 1/2 tons? Or why Ford is mostly ecoboosts and reserving the Coyote for some F150s and Mustangs, or why GM stopped making Camaros, or why almost everything is turbo'ed now a days? Hell even Nissan is dropping their 5.6 V8 in their Armadas to go turbo v6.

 

We're the least polluting 1st world country, but have some of the strictest laws & stupidest groups for that cause!! Go to India, China & Russia to get them to clean up the atmosphere!! EV's are a huge scam compared to ICE vehicles in the real pollutant issues.

 

My work takes me all over the world. One would have to be a special level of stupid, or just plain ignorant, to think our car engine restrictions will make a dent in global warming and climate change.

With the acceleration of manufacturing transitioning out of China and into India, SEA and Africa, good luck getting all those dozens of governments to enforce any type of environmental regulation. Not that China ever cared about environmental issues in the first place.

This is not a valid argument. When it was developing it was heavily polluting country. You can’t compare US to India or china which are still developing, and would have higher pollution.

I have a new Tacoma along with a 4runner. The new turbo motor in the Tacoma is really nice. Plenty of power in lower rpms. I love driving it. Longevity? Who knows. There are a few failed transmissions already on the Tacoma forums. But I know that our 19' 4runner will go for years and years..... And I love driving that too.

My electric bills have doubled this year, I logged into my account and compared my usage to the same time last year. Our consumption is almost identical but my bill has literally doubled. The green deal is going to bankrupt Americans.

In Maine, if your not part of a Solar Farm, you have to pay extra to offset the money the solar farm participants are not paying. I’m wondering what would happen if everyone was part of the solar farms.

 

When I bought my SR5P, the ORP I went to look at was in the sales pickup bay so he tried to show me a '22 Pro with 27k on the clock. My first question was if it would be cheaper than a new ORP and when the answer is no, all could ask is why I'd pay more for a used vehicle with a suspension that's getting ripped out anyway?

Worst part about the Pro is they build the shocks just like the retail units so when you buy that Pro with 27k on the clock, you're already over halfway to a rebuild.

 

What are people doing when their shocks need to be rebuilt? Shipping them out to Fox and renting a car while you wait to get them back?

 

You are right my bad. Its not like we have any independent way of verifying emissions into atmosphere.

 

The fronts are IFP and a lot of shops won't do them so that's about what you'd have to do. Personal opinion is that the TRDP is largely a pavement princess trim and most don't go off road enough to notice the degradation. On-road it feels very gradual over time so you don't even notice like you will when you get on the dirt and feel the fade.

 

If you think China in fact emits less than the US, then you are more naive than people give you credit for.

 

Frankly an SR5 with a set of quality shocks from Accutune or something will run circles around the "pro" for 20-40% less cost. The only thing it won't have is the rear locker but with ATRAC it's a none issue. For 4k you can get a helluva system with remote reservior front and back that will make the Pro feel like a minivan.

I guess if the buyer is a suburban office warrior who just wants a package that never needs after market parts and doesn't keep it long enough to run out of warranty then sure, why not. But anyone who knows anything about offroad suspension would chuckle at the "TRD pro" shocks especially at the price people seem to be paying for them.

 

I just got this email from a dealer. Seems like a lot of money for 40 & 45K miles.

 

Eh, I have a TRP Pro with the plan on keeping the shocks until 50k mi and then possibly upgrading to Kings. Stock, the truck is plenty capable off road. Is the Pro the best bang for your buck? Definitely not. Even the car care nut said the ORP was the best trim for the cost. That being said, I always find it amusing to see how passionate some people on the forum are at getting a lower trim 4R, upgrading it, and expressing how much better their car is than a TRD Pro. Copium lol
