It's about 25 cm (9.8") in a straight line and 26 cm hugging the contours. The visors will cover portions of the moonroof opening; I recall seeing this in a T4R thread before I started.

Removed the grab handle covers with a hook tool following this video and popped the handle off with a pocket screwdriver following this video. I used 1/4" Paulin P/N 843-673 toggle anchors, rated for 1080 lb (yeah right) and fairly cheap at Home Depot. I cut them shorter to fit better in the vehicle. Note the plastic anchor retainers "float". For a rigid grab handle install, looseness would be noticeable; you need to really torque down on the screws to take up the play, so don't use philips head screws. I used Paulin P/N 846-768 1/4"x1-1/2 robertson screws. (The OEM M6 bolts are about 1-1/2" long.) Allen or torx screws would work too. Toggle anchors have been used successfully before for paracord handle installs, ref. Trail 4R's write-up and Wraingler's video.



Rest of the install went pretty smoothly. There are two hanging pegs on the back of each visor base, easily cut off with the same flush cutter used to cut the toggle anchor retainer pulls.

^You'd need more care to prevent the T-slot nuts from falling into the cradle structure in the ceiling during install/removal, especially with a large visor, but yes those should work. The toggle anchors stay retained in the holes with the screw removed.

 

That’s what I used
To prevent them from falling, put the bolt thru them, then turn them into position, and hold pressure when tightening. I installed all four FJ Handles on my current truck with this method without dropping any.

^Yep, it's a work in progress, as mine is a 2010 without the bracket for the upper hole. The handle will be helpful once I install a suspension lift.

 

Hey all, am I missing something here? I lost my FJ due to a deer wanting to have a conversation with my aftermarket bumper which did not go well for her, or me for that matter because insurance totaled her, but I truly miss the side visors and am glad someone did this because I think its going to be my first mod, but what is the big deal with a sunroof versus no sunroof, I have one, and personally am not worried about these getting in the way if I install them (yet) mind you.

Is the concern only aesthetic in getting in the way of the view when its opened?

You lose about 4 inches of headroom with the sunroof so potentially the visor could be in your skull.

 

I know just what the OP's issue is. During my working years, I would drive early morning on the interstate directly East. Then in the afternoon drive home 20 minutes directly West. At those certain times of the year that sun would show through exactly the middle of the windshield, behind the rearview mirror. So even with both shades down it didn't help. In the areas where the highway curved around, the sun glare would change to the driver's side window. But as the OP mentioned, if your seat is back far enough the visor now moved to the side, will not cover the rear third or so of the window.
Too bad that aftermarket sun visor addition from Amazon doesn't move BOTH vertical and horizontal.
Those side window sun visors on my 2010 FJ were indeed handy. Probably also required due to the distance beteen the driver and the front visors.

I still may go this route, I am tall but my seat is low enough it may be worth the hassle, I really really miss my side wings.

If you go ahead with the FJ side visors, I'd highly recommend using the t-slot nuts shown in post #34. Seems way easier than other methods of attachment. Let us know how it goes if you do.

 

I was just looking at that ironically and you are right, they look to be easier.

What size did you use and how did you end up getting them to set still when rethreading through the FJ handles?

 

I haven't actually used them, but @Saker has, and from what he says, you thread the nut onto the bolt which is already through the visor mounting bracket, then finagle the nut into the hole and turn it 90°. Once the nut is in the hole in the correct orientation, you keep pressure outward on the bracket while you tighten the nut. The nut being already threaded onto the bolt keeps it from falling down behind the panel.

Let me see if I can find his thread on this - I believe it has the size of the nuts (and maybe the bolts), or links to another thread that does.

Did you orient them the proper way or upside down? IIRC some made them work but flipped the orientation. I think someone from Tacomaworld?!?

Do you think this would work for the 2nd row handles? I wouldn't do them up front as I have a moonroof but I think this would be beneficial for 2nd row for my kids.

 

In post #10 he has a link to another forum thread that shows the nut size and where that guy got them.

 

I know that several members have mounted the FJ grab handles on all 4 doors, so I can't imagine that the visor wouldn't work there also, as the bolt spacing is the same for both.

I can't speak to the orientation, though...

I tried both and found the original FJ orientation to give the most headroom for the front row. You can see in this pic the visor is sculpted to be higher in the "rear" portion:



For 2nd row, flipping the visors (or swapping LH and RH visors) may give more headroom, because of the way the headliner is sloped. You can measure the hole spacing of the 2nd row handle vs. the 1st row handle to verify if it'll work in the 4R 2nd row.

For attachment, IMO the Home Depot toggle anchors are the easiest, no danger of them falling into the roof. Just need to torque down the screws to avoid wobble, so use hex-head, socket head, or robertson screws, not philips head.

^Yeah. Unfortunately there are no overhead handles in the Access Cab model, so I can't easily retrofit them in my truck.

^The legendary Hilux's visor didn't survive WhistlinDiesel's durability test, so no. Best solution is to put some distance between the wife and the visor. There's a slide-out cargo tray available to ease loading.

Have a look:

1. This is the stock flip-up grab handle.
2. The stock grab handle removed. Uh-oh. Square holes.
3. The FJ grab handle, with an M6x1.0x50mm screw, plus appropriate split and flat washers, and a T-nut from the 80/20 system. (Of course two of everything are required per handle.)
4. The FJ handle, installed.

To install: with the bolts and washers through the handle and the t-nuts threaded onto the ends, rock the t-nuts into the square holes while oriented horizontally. Then, using a screwdriver press the t-nuts all the way into the holes, carefully rotate them to vertical, and then pull outward on the handle so that the square portion of the t-nut is captured in the square hole. The screws seem long, but they allow you to see what you’re doing at this phase. Finally, while pulling outward on the handle to keep the t-nuts engaged, screw in the screws until tight. I used a little blue LocTite.

I love it "WhistlinDiesel". My wife has a tendency if something is catching or a little stuck she just yanks the hell out of it! She once pulled the face off a kitchen drawer. "finesse"? I don't need no stinking finesse . Just beat the hell out of it until it complies!

 

The 2019 Tacoma's had the visors that would slide back and forth on the arm of the visor. Don't know why Toyota couldn't put these visors in all of their vehicles. I have a 2019 4Runner and I hate the narrow plastic piece too.
