I agree. I just stated the 93 no ethanol makes a difference, I use 87 reg unleaded. Usually has 10% ethanol here, drives fine.

I agree. wanna see a actual improvement. Millage wise... Use no ethanol. (Or the least) why ocatane makes people moist,... is beyond me

Edit- yup. Those dudes wanting 1200 at the wheel, getting 1 mile per 10 gallons, using high octane are loooonging for milage lol. They are worried about detonation. Period. But. Non-eth, ... is a tad pricey.

Last I checked it is around $3.53 here. I do use it in my motorcycles and yard motors but those are a helluva lot cheaper to fill than a 4Runner.

I'm at right at 1k and averaging 20.8. No resets, no monkey business. Yes, I drive it like a grandma, and much of my driving is easy backroads. I traded my 2010 at 117k and was sitting right at 20.

With a lift, a solar panel on the roof, and a winch, it would likely take you most places.

Keep in mind the weight difference and HP/torque numbers from such a small motor.

I had the 5.3L in just about every version of DoD and AFM. It’s a great motor but when you own it you will scream to have a button to just turn that stuff off. If you baby it you can get decent mileage but if you don’t you’ll get 16-17 mpg avg.

I think the benefit in smaller turbo for something like the 4R would be weight, smaller space in the front leaving more room for accessories and better mpg. I think that motor in a full size is ONLY to cover cost of R&D as I’ve said that truck volume is where the big three get their $$ back. So, it’s a foot in the door... but once the tech is sound and paid for you’ll want that motor/tech in vehicle like the 4R for the low end torque and weight savings.

But agree... more to break and not much better in mpg wrapped in a full size skin but it’s great to see the tech maturing.

It's true, and exciting to see the competition ramp up and push for better performance and efficiency. I'm glad we're no longer in the malaise era where manufacturers threw their hands in the air and let the smog equipment choke everything to death. I'm also excited for the future of electric vehicles, but I'm not quite ready to give up gas just yet. I like bringing extra cans along to extend my range off grid.

2016, 40k, locked at 17.2 for the past 25k. I have a gobi rack, stock size wild peaks on it.

Have you taken it to the dealer for a check on the ECM and see if anything is out of calibration?
We've been getting 18.5 to 19.3 for years. In fact we stopped using Murphys gas and went to Exxon and picked up .25 to .5 mpg.
12 mpg is no were normal even if it was lifted with oversized shoes.

After 15,547 miles I'm averaging 21.39mpg with a best tank of 24.45 and worst of 18.14. Stock TRD OR Premium. On the freeway I average 65-70, sometimes 75 but not too often. If I know I'm going to stop and there's nobody behind me I let off the gas a little early and coast some. No reason to go straight from the gas to the brakes.

Don't know if it actually helps, but the last few months have been using non-ethanol 87 octane.

Yes it does help. Ethanol has a lower energy-density than gasoline, meaning that you need to burn more of it to yield the same output. Most gasoline is E10 these days (10% ethanol). It offsets gas demand and bumps up the octane, meaning it's less inclined to detonate/ping. Flex fuel vehicles can run on gasoline or E85, and their E85 MPG rating is much lower for this reason.

2 fillups ago I had bad/stale 87octane it seems. I reset the gauge after filling up because my son drove the truck and he's got a lead foot...kids. I noticed that average for my daily route went down to ~17.5 mpg.

I filled up at the beginning of this week at the same kwiktrip station and reset the gauge. Daily average is back to 19+mpg.

Not definitive results. Too many variables like weather, and too short of a testing period. Just sharing.

My old fulltime 4wd 4.7L v8 sport did a little better.

Just bought 2018, third 4runner. I traded a hybrid Camry. Missed it, but like others here, didn't pay much attention to mileage. First 200 miles getting a tad over 15. Seeing comments here about 91v87, am real interested in it improving mpg. So, to be sure, there is no danger in going higher octane? or impact on factory warranty??

Your motor is no where near being broke in yet. Your mileage will improve when that happens. An yes there is no danger going higher and no impact on the factory warranty....unless you go higher than pump gas. Don't go putting 110 race gas in there.

No, there is no danger. I'd be really surprised if your mileage improved so much that it offsets the cost of the higher octane fuel though.

Thanks, the answer I was hoping for - whether higher price was equal to increased mpg.
