Oil change, remove filter first?

Do I need to drain the oil first before removing filter, or can the filter removed first? I am worried about all the oil draining through filter port.

 

I have changed oil both ways and it never changed how much comes out of the filter housing. I do usually drain oil first with the fill cap removed to speed things up a bit. I then remove the filter and allow everything to drain completed.

I then reinstall drain plug, new filter and fill with oil. I do utilize the little plastic filter drain tool that comes with the new filter. The filter housing does hold a fair amount of oil.

 

It makes no difference....do whatever way works for you.

 

I typically drain the filter housing into one container and the engine oil into another. It makes no difference.

 

Either or doesn’t matter it will still hold the same amount unless you use that drain thing on that stupid oil filter design.

 

Gotcha thanks for the replies. I am going to attempt to change the oil without a jack nor ramps, and wanted to make sure that I can get the filter off before I drained all the oil via the drain plug. Dont wanna be in the situation of being unable to remove the filter and have to add fresh oil with a used filter.

 

I don't know what your process is, but using ramps makes this job so much easier.

 

Only so much oil will come out of the filter port (just what resides inside the filter). There is a valve preventing all the oil from pouring out.

 

I have ramps but I dont have a garage,
planning to do it in our common parking lot without getting too much attention, fingers crossed. I have the Fumoto and RCI skid, theres that.

 

I’ve also got the Fumoto drain and RCI skids and am able to easily change my oil and filter without using my ramps. That said, having a 2” lift does help with getting under the engine skid to the Fumoto valve…

There's a place that charges 45$/hr for me to use their two post lift, but after a couple of times, I am feeling I dont wanna pay that, they are also 20 mins away dont want to drive that just for an oil change. Hoping can change the oil in the parking lot without making a mess saving time and money. Maybe I can buy a house with a garage with the money saved too. In Seattle...
