2023 Clacking at 1000-1300 rpm

I have read others with similar descriptions of this behavior, but the two other 5th gens I have driven do not do this. It is a clacking/tapping noise that always occurs at 1000-1300 RPM. It does not go away when the engine is warm, it is always there. In the video below I am revving it through that range and you can hear it start to clack. Is this "normal" or do I need to get it to the dealer? It only has 5k miles on it.

 

Check oil level

 

It's under warranty. Don't make it your problem. Make it the dealers problem. Take it in so they can diagnose/fix it for you.

 

Oil level is right at full. It's had 2 oil changes (@ 1k and 5k miles). Neither affected the noise. I can take it to dealer but don't want to waste the time if everyone here says it's normal.

 

The Toyota 4.0 is a loud engine. So if it's not low on oil chances are it's normal.

 

I think mine sounds like that since day 1. I have 9,000 miles now.

 

I don't hear anything off.
If it runs right, shows no codes and no leaks I think it's good.

 

Take it to the dealership and get it documented, even if they say it’s normal. It’s on record.

There might or might not be a problem.
A few questions to condsider:
dealer diagnostics fee is 130$?
how much is peace of mind worth?
if we say that is normal, are you going to be convinced?

I take oil samples every oil change and send for analysis, I keep all my receipts, I intend to never let the dealership touch it unless it is warranty work.

 

What exactly is the oil sample analysis telling you? I am close to 200k and have never sent any oil samples. My 4Runner runs fine. Just did a 1900 mile road trip.

 

It can alert to excessive wear in the engine, coolant contamination, poor oil/air filtration etc. Probably not something to 100% rely on blindly but gets you most of the way there. It is just another data point for me.

Our 2008 camry with 160+k miles had oil burning issues and before taking it to the service with 100+$ diagnostics fee, I sent in an oil sample for 35$ and the results came back very good. I decided to hold off and just watch the oil level. Doing good so far. It's just not worth any significant repairs on that vehicle.
On my 4R though its an extra gauge I can watch during the many years I am planning on owning it.

 

Is this something you did/do with all your cars? How much do one of these analysis go for?

 

I have only changed oil 3 times on my 4R since I bought it new, and have had all of them analyzed. I'll keep doing that as long as I can. 35$ a pop including shipping if uou go with Blackstone.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like it's probably normal. I found some videos on YouTube with 4runners that sound the same as well. I'll link an example below. But I'll get it on record with the dealer anyway just to see what they say.

 

My clatter, which may sound similar to this ONLY occurs on decel (high vacuum), and lasts 2-3 seconds. It is temperature related, in that once fully warm is does it less frequently if at all. Things that come to mind are the cam phasers, timing chain, piston slap, wrist pin, etc. It's loud enough to be concerning.

The rest of the time the engine is relatively quiet. At this point a dealer will just laugh.

 

Mine sounds the same. 15k miles now. My old Tacoma 2nd gen may have sounded like that also but that truck was so much louder in general it’s hard to tell…
