I really want a new 4runner but the MPG

That's what I did, and I still couldn't get in. The other issue is that as I'm slowing down to make room, the people behind me are cutting over and passing me.

This is a really poorly designed section of highway, you get on the on-ramp and then there's another two sets of on-rand off-ramps without an extra lane. It always gets super congested around 3:30 when I'm getting out of work. The through traffic people that are smart will stay in the left lane, but a lot of people don't do that.

I actually do have a throttle controller, it's not how far I have to press the prattle, it's the fact that the engine needs to get up to 4K RPM to make any power. By the time the transmission downshifts a couple years and the engine spools up, I have to hit the brakes before I rear-end the car in front of me if I can't get left.

 

After reading almost all the posts on this thread. I have determined that you people want:

1) Very high MPG's.
2) An engine as fast as a Ferrari.
3) An engine as dependable & reliable as a Toyota.
4) You want to keep your big ass tires and all your armor.

To summarize: It has to get 25+ MPG, have great 0-60 times, and go 150+MPH, have very low maintenance costs and last for 300k miles and you don't want to keep all your body-armor and 35 inch tires.

Y'all want a unicorn.

 

@Borracho Loco lol. Appreciate the summary. Mileage is bad, but then I look at it and think to myself do I really expect this big brick on 33s to get good mileage? Nah, whatever lol it’s fun! After all, I can read and the sticker when I bought new and it says what you’re gonna get on a good day . No lies from Toyota there

Also ugly as hell, i will probably end up with a RAV4 gas only when the time comes.

As i drive very little city mostly all highway miles at 55MPH i don't think i would benefit from a hybrid and going by this Hybrid vs Gas Vehicle Savings Calculator, gas only wins.

Yeah..... NO! That thing is worse than fugly! And it's a Camry, which means I would have to drive it this way: and I don't need the expense and hassle of buying and carrying paper bags all the time. Same reason I will never have a Prius.

That's false. Unless you're basing it on the OP's specific driving habits.

If it's 45 miles of mostly 55 mph highways, 20 might be possible. If it's mostly 75-80 mph driving, I would doubt it.

It's really dependent on your environment and driving habits, though. Is it likely? No. Is it possible? Absolutely. There are numerous 4Runners on Fuelly averaging over 20. It's definitely the minority, but it happens.

 

I get 33-35MPG on the old corolla, depends on if the AC is on.

 

I don't like the massive grill. Otherwise, I think the newer Camrys are good looking vehicles. Plus, 300hp. I'd love to have one for traveling.

Sure, I'd rather have a Lexus. But, I wouldn't hate a Camry.

 

Interesting choice. It's your money, but I feel like that's the worst option of the realistic ones discussed.

What prices are you using for gas vs hybrid Rav4? And I guess I'm curious why you wouldn't get a car (even cheaper and better mileage), since you already have the 4R and Tundra in the garage?

Don't get me wrong, we have a Rav4, but it is the hybrid model, and we went with this over a sedan so the dogs would have somewhere to ride.

 

Got this yesterday on a three hour drive to the San Joaquin Valley in central California. Oh, and yeah, I was doing 75 mph most of the time.

The way I justified the fuel expense is simple: I’ll never spend more in fuel than I will having to replace a different vehicle at 250,000kms instead of the 500,000+kms the 4Runner will last me.

buy a cheaper vehicle that you have to replace sooner, how much will your next vehicle have gone up by when you have to replace it? How much would extra fuel on the 4Runner have cost you?

 

A Corolla will beat the 4Runner if longevity is the goal. But Corolla can't do a fraction of what 4Runner can. 4Runner is the jack of all trades. Good choice

But you need to realize, you WILL burn a few Corollas worth of fuel, be ready for that.

 

Well I was basing his replacement vehicle or alternate purchase as one in the SUV family, not compact car. I could use the same argument that he should just buy a Yamaha R3 instead of Corolla and really save on fuel and new purchase price lol also most SUV’s that are great on gas are extremely complicated and the long term research isn’t there. I’ve done tons of research, overall 4Runner was the way to go for reliability, availability of parts, ease of self-maintaining it. If you look up the most model of vehicle still on road with highest mileage it goes

It’s on par with diesel longevity. Over 300,000 miles I’ll spend about 62,000 litres of fuel amortized over 25 years worth it. My mom just bought a 24 Corolla, $36,000 LE and sure she gets 47MPG but it’s got alot of screens, doubt it’ll exist in 300,000 miles/25 years. Plus again, can’t do anything a 4Runner can

 

I was using toyota.com prices plus all the b/s fees i get hit with when something has a battery. Plus gas is cheaper here..... now if your in CA it would make a huge difference.

No more cars is because of the sight line. The grass gets so tall you can't see traffic when crossing the road in the summer. Dogs ride in the 4runner

I keep my cars/trucks a long time to, i don't think the turbo, battery crap will last.

My 27 year old Tacoma with no repairs, which no one seems to believe. Only fluid changes, timing belt, tires, brakes. The AC still blows cold and never been re-charged. You really think this new stuff will last 27 years?

 

yeah exactly, everyone’s basing their assumptions on “what will last a long time” on outdated information. The vehicles that USED to last a long time no longer have the same powertrain, the only thing original to the old reliable model is the name. 4Runner has had the same powertrain for two decades now, so it’s safe to assume it’ll still last 20-30 years if cared for.

edit: once new redesigned 4 and 6 banger turbo hybrid Tacomas, tundras, highlanders, 4Runners start lasting 20+ years and 300,000+ miles and the powertrain hasn’t changed, THEN we can start talking about how they’re just as reliable. But all those extra computer chips, screens, soy insulated wiring, small displacement under very high pressure and strain, good luck. I don’t have hope, rarely that something gets much more complicated and put under more strain but therefore becomes more reliable. You know why 4Runners last forever? It’s a 4 litre displacement v6 that only makes like 275HP? There’s no strain there, it just chugs along like a tractor

Toyota seems to be going the same way all American manufacturers are. Everyone blames the EPA and the government but i bet Toyotas profit margin is way higher on this new stuff.

People paid more for Toyota because they where reliable take that away and they are no different than Ford, Jeep so there is no point is paying the Toyota premium anymore. I have had Jeep and Ford and they both left a stain on my cement floor and need monthly repairs before ever getting to 100k.

Time will tell.

I paid $4.35 a gallon today for Unleaded cheap stuff in Poway, Ca.
Not happy about it, just an observation.

I remember being able to fill up my 1965 VW bug for $5! OK, maybe not a full tank, but a substantial amount of gas!

 

Do you remember having to change the oil every 1500 miles, with the six little nuts holding on that screen it had instead of a filter?

 

Yes I do....and the valves were supposed to be adjusted often. I think my air filter was an oil bath set up?

 

Yes, I think the valve adjustment interval was something like 5k miles and oil bath air filter.

 

My first car was a 67 type III. I had to add balancing the dual Solex carbs with a vacuum gauge.
