In 20 years, will the 5th Gen be considered a “Classic”

They won’t be super valuable. They are not ground breaking stylistically. They are not even super innovative. But they represent the end of an era. Heck, the VW Beetle, Chevy Bel Air and Datsun 240 Z are all “Classics”, so obviously there are intangibles involved in becoming a “Classic”

I know there will be some bias, but what do you think? Does the 5th Gen have that “intangible”? The biggest thing working against that premise is that in 20 years, there will still be a lot on the road. Hard to be a Classic when you are still seen on the daily.

I mean in 20 years time it will be a 35 year old design… the thing is, they were produced and sold in volume and are super hearty, so those last two factors goes against them becoming some super valuable car. But if one tucked a fully factory OEM version away untouched in a barn for 25 years, then yeah… maybe.

 

Bro, it's considered a classic right now. The look/body style is going to be timeless. It's instantly recognizable anywhere you drive.

 

The 2019 TRD Pro will be a collector vehicle. It was the ONLY year that the 4Runner came in VooDoo Blue. They only did it for one year. Other vehicles like the Tacoma & FJ Cruiser...when the special came out for that year, it was offered later on in the preceding years. But not the 4Runner. That year & color is a real unicorn.

 

I saw a voodoo blue 4Runner today, its definitely a very distinct color.

It's only the last few years that they started putting Pro colors on other models though. Inferno, quicksand, cement, cavalry blue, and voodoo blue were only available on the pro, I think starting with the 2020 army green the Pro colors became available on other 4Runners.

Like Lunar rock will never be rare, it's an awesome color but I see so many models of 4Runner in that color.

Lime Rush and Terra are ugly so who cares about them, haha.

Edit, just occurred to me that the shoreline blue OG Trai might be the rarest of all. You don't see a lot of OG trails, and the blue is super rare. I've only seen one in person in my life.

 

In 20 years 5th Gen Runners will still be all over the road serving as reliable daily drivers for people who bought something because it lasts. I’ll probably still have mine (if I last that long).

Classic in terms of collectibility/value? Probably not. Classic because it’ll still be a useful and legit vehicle with real capabilities? I’d bet on the latter.

 

Although color can attract a buyer, it doesn't make a 4Runner a "classic". The 5G will be a classic only in the same way as an earlier Toyota, for some certain things to some certain people. Some people lust after the SFA trucks, and some over the 22R/E, but they aren't "classics". The 5G will be similar, not a classic, but a "remember when" Toyota offered the 4.0L, yeah, those were the days.

 

I regret selling my 2021 Tacoma TRD OffRoad, it was VooDoo Blue. It got SO much attention. You could see that truck coming at you a mile away. I could never commit a crime in that truck. They'd find me in 2 minutes.

Fun fact, the color kind of "glows" at night. It was almost a neon color.

It's the last NA V6 and it's a particularly reliable one. The 5th gen will be just as much a classic as the 3rd gen is now (as the last of the small, lower tech 4Runners). It won't be some rare unicorn that holds value like nothing else, but clean ones will demand a bit of a premium and it will be highly desired by those who want for what it is.

 

2019 is also the last year with a real twist to start key, and less driver monitoring...

They shoulda done the 2024 PRO in heritage blue, like they did with the 2014 FJ TTUE...

I have a 2020 Offroad, and it is a twist start key.

 

May be it will not considered classic, but sure it will be considered best ever made in 20 years from now.

I’d say it’s as close as you can get to an old school LC from the 90’s (referring more to old school reliability using older simple construction). But with some modern amenities to make it acceptable in today's marketplace. Will it be a valuable classic? Not likely…but just a classic to the enthusiasts. I personally hope so as I await my first and last 2024 ORP. AND yes, it’s in the ugly Terra color. Hope this works out!

In 20 years, the oldest 5th gens will be 34 years old.

 

My favorite Toyota color, and I don’t typically like loud paint on cars. Something about the Voodoo.

 

In 20 years, I wonder if we’ll still have gasoline available for purchase? Ya gotta wonder…. I’ll be 88 by then. ……..if I’m even still around. ……..if this planet is still around.

 

My dad, who collected and restored classic and antique cars, differentiated between classic cars and antiques. To be a classic car, it would have to have certain proportions. Classical proportions. A ratio of 3-4-5 from the trunk to the passenger compartment to the hood. He was quite animated about it, going on about the golden ratio or the golden mean, and accompanied his explanation with a bunch of drawings which meant nothing to my 10 year old mind. I don’t know whether this was just a fanciful artifact of his own imagination, or the distinction has just become arcane. But it was a great father-son moment.

 

I thought they would all rust out in five years

 

They’ll be sought after classics 2 years after the new design rolls out and the supply of new and nearly new 5th gens starts to dwindle. 5.7 Tundras are selling for ~15% more than the 3.5s. IMO there will be a huge demand for the 4.0L in whatever platform it’s in for off roaders. The 4R will be the easiest to find for awhile, and as time goes on, nice examples will be harder and harder to come by. 20years? We will be selling this for about what be paid for them if I’m right. Lol

 

Your daily will not become a classic. But one put away? I think yes these things are beautiful. This drive train, flat foldable seats, no batteries - highly desired.

 

My 2003 V8 full-time 4wd would be 21 years old now, and it is a classic in my mind (but not to the general population). I sure wish I had it back.

~5% of 4Runners make it past 200k miles, so about 100,000 out of the 2 million built. Cut that by half in 20 years as the early 5th gens are already in the 150k range, so about 50,000 on the road.

That's if the 12 states don't follow through with their announcements to ban new gasoline-powered vehicles in 2035. If they do, gas pumps will be harder to find in 20 years.

In 20 years, typical SUV prices will probably in the $240k range. If you manage to hold onto your 5th gen for that long, you can probably sell it for $30k lol.

 

Its a going to be Hydrogen. They're already using it in California.

 

But if they catch on fire like battery powered cars do?

 

Won’t be a classic.
