255/80R17 tire size

Come to the 255/80 dark side!

 

Good question. I don't like to play in the rocks too often, but the only slice I had was in the sidewall because I was paying attention to the tree on my passenger side and not the rock on the driver side. lol

 

I wanna go 255/85R17

 

Those are on my radar, but I heard you have to do BMC and technically MT says my wheels are too wide.

It's worth considering. But, you'd be aired down if you're playing in the rocks, so that helps. And, I didn't really check, but most tires in that size are most likely LT tires, so they should have decent puncture resistance.

I didn't even know they made this size. I'll have to keep that in mind for my next upgrade. I love the look of the fatties, but I think I might try skinnies next time.

My biggest concern was originally flotation, which is why I went wide. But, I think the skinnies would be better in most of the terrain I play in these days.

I believe all 255/80's are LT

Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT's are the only ones in 255/85 currently. They are badass tires for sure.

 

For sure, I have the same thoughts.

I know a guy on my local BC 4Runner group running 255/85 on his 3rd Gen. Not sure what brand.
But, I was googling for a sec and it’s definitely hard to find the size in the popular tires, so far. Tried Mickey’s, Michelin, Cooper, haven’t looked at Dick Cepeks sizing yet. I like their tires .

Goodyear owns Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels, but the company has remained independently operated since its founding in 1963. Goodyear acquired the Mickey Thompson brand in 2021 when it bought Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, which had previously owned Mickey Thompson.

It's depressing to know that a shitty tire company like Goodyear owns two of the best manufacturers of truck tires.

Also, Mickey Thompson did buy Dick Cepek in 2000. Dick Cepek is done now, but one of their designs is still available as the Mickey Thompson Baja Legend EXP.

However, for now, I do not want to lose my front flaps or cut the front fender. I understand I might have to compromise.

No not on the tread surface. On the sidewall, yes, so you lower tire pressure.

 

Yes, all the 255/80 choices are all LT, and unfortunately only E.

I really really wanted this size, but I really don't need or want a E rated tire.

 

My 235/80's are E RATED and ride fine with little to no noise.

They have a higher maximum load and greater puncture resistance, but are also much heavier than lower ratings.

 

Thanks. is 255/80 heavier than stock 265/70 or the next common size 275/70(not that it matters too much to me,)? I am seriously considering 255/80s. Toyo Open Country from Discount Tire.

 

Most of the tire makers list the weights on their websites.

IIRC from my research, the lightest 255/80 is the Toyota AT 3 at 50lbs, which is a good 10lbs more than the stock 265/70.

The 275/70 is also mostly only available as an E load, and they're also quite heavy.

To put it in perspective, something like an F250 that can tow 15k LBS is going to come with E load tires.

Seriously, check the tire weights, some are shockingly high, like the new K03 and Falkens

 

As mentioned LT tires (load range C, D, E, etc) are heavier duty, and therefore heavier. Load range E are 10 ply rating, although they're not necessarily actually 10 ply tires.

Most likely yes, just due to the heavier load rating. But, you can look at individual tire specs, as some brands and models run heavier than others. For example, Falken AT3W's tend to run very heavy for their size.

Discount Tire's website will have specs listed, so you can compare the weight of the different models and sizes you're looking at.

 

From what I have seen most all 80 series tires are E RATED. The 80 series are generally used for trucks carrying loads. Common on dually one tons. I like them for their thick side walls and better puncture resistance.

 

Not being rude, but Google it. There is a lot of information and education related to tires; speed rating, load rating, construction, etc. You don't know what you don't know, and trying to answer a question like "educate me on E rating meaning" could mean a lot of things. When people say things like heavier tire, it can mean the weight (how heavy it is to pick up) or how heavy the vehicle can be that uses that tire. There are so many things that go into it all. Your question might have a one sentence answer, or it might take a day or reading a trade magazine or journal. You'll also want to know what the numbers mean, speed and load rating (outside of just the letters, S, LT C, D, E, etc).
