Steering shimmy?

I've been researching a new SUV to replace my Audi B8 S4 6MT and the 4Runner was at the top of the list due to perceived durability and dependability. I’ve driven a couple of Limited models and was debating the merits of the Limited with AWD but brace-face versus one of the Off Road models to get the more appropriate 17” wheels, better front end, and clearances but with the trade-off of having a RWD truck 99% of the time. Last night I read thread after thread in multiple forums and corners online about owners with steering issues at highway speeds that they, their Toyota dealers, and/or their tire &wheel dealers cannot solve. This seems to span multiple years, multiple wheel & tire combinations throughout the 5th generation.


I know this vehicle is supremely capable off-road, but I don’t plan on leaving pavement, I’m considering 4Runner because I live in a somewhat rural area in the northeast where I routinely have to deal with bad road conditions. My Audi + snows can handle the winter weather but any sort of deep snow or local flooding and the S4 stays home. Our other car is a current model MDX which is the every-day kid hauler for my better half. 90%+ of my driving is on the highway (commuting) and I’m looking for an SUV that can get me through the rural parts to get me to the highway and back in one piece and can also be relied on for family road trips across the country. I’m prepared for the mileage penalty of a BOF truck since my Audi S4 doesn’t exactly get good mpg’s anyway. What I’m wary of is this steering issue. What is it?? And why hasn’t Toyota figured this out yet, or have they? How prevalent is this? Every car and brand has its fair share of issues, but the unresolved (?) nature of this is concerning.

Mine drives like a dream and I have KO2’s. I think most vibes come from aftermarket wheels and tires, or lifts. I would just spend some time on a long test drive and you should be all good.

 

dont what to get into the whole thing. long story short. oem wheels need to be balanced with road force and a wheel flange. most aftermarket wheels balance fine on lifted 4runners. if you keep vehicle stock should be no problem.

 

I've never had any problem with mine. Was fine with the stock wheels and tires...and it's still fine with aftermarket wheels and tires.

Mine isn't lifted... still running stock suspension.

 

my bad... I didn't mention that my explanation if for lift 2.25"+. a level kit I think will be ok too

 

Mine rolls along just fine at speeds in the 80's or less.

 

Well, I am sure that forum users represent a minority of 4Runner owners so the issue might be exaggerated here, as can be the case on forums. But, to answer your question about how prevalent the wheel wobble is, I've had two 4Runners and it's been present on both. I worked with the dealer and with Les Schwab on my first 4Runner and neither resolved the issue. We even swapped out wheels with another 4Runner on the lot and the shimmy remained. My dealer actually let me "return" my 4Runner for another one a week after purchase because they couldn't figure it out. I test drove my current 4Runner on the highway and the shimmy was/is much better, but it still appears at times around 60 mph, though it's rare and I just live with it. I drive back roads and don't often drive 60+. If I commuted on the freeway daily, I'd be more bothered. At the least, make sure you take a long test drive on the freeway (60+ mph). I know people here will suggest road force balancing, which I did on the first 4Runner I had without success. I will likely give that another try with my current 4Runner one of these days.

 

I’m interested in opinions/experience with 4Runner tire balancing in the Everett, WA area. I’ve used Discount Tire over the years but never had balancing challenges like the 4Runner. Recommendations? Thanks.

 

Compared to your previous vehicle. Slow, sluggish with massive sway. And poor gas milage to boot. As long as you go in knowing this its a nice truck.
