More horse power!

Hey, new member here. I’m Bearman34. 2020 4Runner off road.
Looking for more horsepower out of my 4.0 with a tune. I’m upgrading my intake and exhaust and want the most out of it. I already have a pedal commander and I love it. But being a gear head at heart I want more.

 

Got $$? Supercharger.

Actually I do! lol start saving my money sounds like the option. I wish someone would make a real tune for the slug. I read somewhere that Toyota has it locked? BTW this is my 3rd slug

 

A good tune will add usable power. Other than that, a Supercharger is really the only thing worth spending money on.

Thanks bass guy. I’m no stranger to this, I had a fj manual trans for about 8 years. Loved that truck, 3 inch lift 33s. It was a little tank, until the frame rusted out from under it. Not a spec of rust on the body. Toyota thing I guess. 17 tundra,nice truck but I always wanted a 4 runner.

 

The dealership tuned my Corolla. Has anyone asked Im sure they can.

Supercharger and that’s it. The pedal pretender does nothing you couldn’t do with your foot.

Non of those are going to give you more horsepower.

 

I will just add, depending on where you’re located, tuning chips, and maybe even superchargers, are illegal. I’m in California, for example, where any modification like that is not allowed. Whether or not you get caught is another matter but it would be a pain to take those mods off and on every two years when you go in for a smog check.

 

Like others have mentioned a super charger I think would be your best option. Or you can go extreme and a do a custom engine swap to a 5.7 V8 from the Tundra.

 

The Magnusson Supercharger has a CARB # so is legal in CA.

 

Ok, I wasn’t sure on superchargers but again, the tuning chips aren’t legal.

 

What chips? I don't think any of the current gen tuning products use chips.

 

A Thorton Stage 3 chip says it adds 5 mpg and 60 hp, for example. What tuning products are you referring to?

 

Those chips do nothing.

Actual tunes from KDMax change multiple parameters in the ECU.

"Chip" is an inaccurate description of an OBD plug in tuner.

All they can really accomplish is changing the ignition timing and fuel delivery values. Advancing the ignition timing and leaning off the fuel mixture will usually result in more power. Without changes to the heads, cam, exhaust and induction, there's not much power to be had. When those mechanical parameters are changed then the tuner can indeed extract significant amounts of power.

 

I've heard stickers can add some extra HP.

 

Well, seems people just want to argue semantics for the sake of argument. I have better things to do so have at it.

Regardless, “chips”, “tuning”, “ecu tuning”, is all illegal in California so my point still stands.

 

If you are looking for more hp, tuning will not make the cut! Smoother yes but Supercharged will make the hp!

 

How often are you guys getting pulled over that you're worried about putting a chip in?? Just don't drive like an animal

 

8 years before you have to smog with the new regulations. You can also just load the OEM tune for the test then reload the uprated tune.
