Autoease Liftgate Installation question

I'm currently pending a response from their support, but has anyone had an issue with the liftgate not opening and simply relocking when hitting the button (in car or on liftgate)? I think I have installed everything to a "t", but the door doesn't open. I saw on some videos that there are springs they supply for some kits at the lock to help it open, and wonder if this is my problem. I can give the gate a tiny nudge to open after it unlocks and it opens just fine. Just wondering what experience has presented.

I have notes to provide on my install that I'll add in a bit. There are few to no video examples of an install for a 2023, let alone a install pdf (as one did not come with my kit). My only beef is that I thought I needed to put the control box in the liftgate. Nope...Goes by the jack. That was a very time consuming mistake.

I will say that everything works as expected and quite well...minus my minor problem.

 

So many responses!!! Oddly enough I drove around for a few days and hit the button and the damn thing lifted up just fine. It's worked just fine since. I have not installed the foot kick sensor yet. That'll come when I have more patience.

The lack of responses generally indicates a lack of experience with the product. Instead of making everyone search (never personally heard of autoease) how about a link?

 

I'm interested but my wallets flat right now. I did an internet search and found the general instructions (not model specific) on line. It appeared that you do have to do some hole drilling for switches and some extensive wire running.

I used this as the go-by however it is not entirely accurate for the 2023 install. This guy does a reasonably accurate install https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avnKyZfPtF0 for a 2020 but there is a nuance here that I didn't catch until it was too late. The older kit was wired so that the control box could be zip tied in the lift gate. I realized this problem when I ran my control wires from the dash back to the back of the car and there wasn't enough distance to make it all the way to the lift gate. That is when I realized my version has you zip tie the control box by the jack. This guy's video matches my 2023 install more accurate for a 2023: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8svKbnrjnA .

 

I don't have a write up but I do have the manual!!!! See attached. I do love having an automatic door. My wife thinks I'm stupid but nevertheless...

Notes to mention: the videos I have found either have older upper strut mounts or they just didn't follow the directions. Pay attention to the right/left upper strut mount as it looks like it is backwards. Also, the wires that come separate from the white adapter sometimes are not actually numbers (step 9). The colors were what matched up. Number 3 was not brown for me. I actually used Google translate and read the correct colors from a piece of paper that came in the box. Also, the plugs in step 10 do not look exactly the same as my 2023. There are two plugs in the lift gate that look exactly the same. You will hijack the one on the left (when standing at the back of the truck, have the liftgate open above you and you are looking up and towards the front of the vehicle. In the picture, there is a yellow plastic thing that simply looks like the plug to the left. Step 13 is confusing. I stole the lighting power for my new button from the button to the right of my 400W/100W adapter button. It is circled in blue. Step 14 don't forget to take your 30a fuse and plug it into their little jumper. On Step 16, I didn't cut into the metal. I popped out the black plastic hand hold to the right of the red circle and cut out a rectangle with a dremel. It's clean and hidden.

Update for the gang... Left strut popped off the ball and now won't compress. The little clips on the struts didn't want to go back to their original shape and I was worried about this. Autoease responded within 48 hours and shipped a set of new struts. I have not added them on yet due to a trip. Will let you know how this continues. Good news is that I added the stock struts back and things still work from a auto-unlocking perspective. Next I think I want to add a button to the inside so when I am sleeping in the back I can hit the button and pop it open without the keys.

Agreed. Not cheap. But I do like being able to just hit the button.

 

Plus most of us 4Runner owners like the simplicity of the manual hatch.
