SR5 Premium VS Off Road Premium

Hello all.. Really excited about getting my first 4Runner.. Been saving a long time for this moment. Also stoked to be a part of this community. I've heard nothing but good reviews about you all.

Anyways..

1. I'm not huge into off roading. So as far as all the extra off road features like crawl control.. Do I even need an off road model? I live in Oregon so we get snow and mud during the winter but nothing crazy. I also would like to do a little more off roading when I get a 4Runner but will never do major off roading. Would the Sr5 Premium do just fine? Would the Off Road model get me out of that many more stuck situations if I'm not really pushing it to the limits off roading? Going with the premium because we want the leather and moonroof.

2. Love the look of a lift on a 4Runner but wondering if that just causes more issues down the road?

Any advice would be appreciated!!

 

The truck you pick is only part of the equation. It's all about your skill level. I've seen idiots in seriously modded 4 wheelers get stuck, and I've seen experts rock climb like a champ, while driving a Suzuki Sidekick (remember those?)

If you're going to lightly off road, the SR5 will be fine. My truck is an SR5, it's label as a "40th Ann Edition", but it's really a fancy-ass SR5 Premium.

The best thing about the SR5 trim: You can upgrade/modify it with ease later. No KDSS or XReas to rip out or change later. You get to pick what YOU want!

 

Edit: Too slow, Morgan's voting SR5. Sounds like you'd be paying a couple grand for valences and for tech you wont use in an Off Road. And SR5 isnt a Corolla, you'll get to -and back from- everywhere you want to go.

 

My wife liked the TRD color(AG) which you couldn’t get in the SR5’s…..she got the last year color and I got my choice of TRD trucks….oh darn….
You can get a OR, ORP without KDSS.
Myself, I like the improved road manners KDSS brings to the table.

You can get a brand spankin' new 2024 4Runner SR5 (not a premium though) with 2 wheel drive for $43k at this local dealer in my area.

So if I don't do a lift or a leveling spacer.. Could I still put bigger aggressive tires on it?

Also is the spacer lift the same idea of maybe causing issues?

 

Barebone SR5 4WD for the win

 

The biggest tire you can put on it without lifting is a 285/70/R17. It'll rub a bit, but you'll be fine. I'd stay away from spacers. I'll let others chime in on how evil/dumb spacers are (or aren't - we all have opinions on this site).

 

I always tell people, if you want the best 4Runner, get the SR5. If the want the best Jeep, get the Willys

Ill continue to look. Thanks for all the advice. Really want to know more about lifts and the pros and cons. I mean a lot of them out there have lifts, just confused why so many people would do it if it voided their warranty or if it just was a guarantee to hurt things down the road.....

@whippersnapper02 Do you have the SR5P or the ORP? lifted or stock?

 

Any of the popular AT tires in stock size looks loads better than with the Dunlops Toyota gives us. I'm counting the miles until I can justify replacing them

 

I take my SR5 Premium to Moab every year to do as-hard-core rock crawlin' as the truck can take. Fully armored and A-TRAC is under rated. I have been in one situation where a locker would have been beneficial, but A-TRAC did it's job and is f'n magic. I was spinning my wheels and the guys with lockers walked up with out issue. Very steep and snow covered trail.

@Stoney Ranger So the SR5Prem has A-Trac? Also ill never attempt things that you described.. haha. Ill just be doing a little off roading on wet trails and a little small up hills.

Another question is... Is there a benefit to having a Manual transfer case like in the ORP than an electric one like the SR5?

The stick vs the electric one is irrelevant. It's there to look cooler and be "old school".

HOWEVER, the stick (correct me if I'm wrong guys), indicates if a trim level has KDSS option.

Negative. The SR5 had a manual case at one point but it's just a feel good for the driver because the front diff is the same ADD as all the others except the full time 4wd limited.

 

Yes, the SR5P has A-TRAC as factory standard equipment. I believe the Limited is the only trim without it. The 2WD models don't have it either.

The stick or dial issue is moot. They both need to go through the actuator. It's just that the switches (stick or dial) to engage the actuator are different.

 

Get the TRD ORP with KDSS and let the mods begin! Additionally, get a 2nd trust deed on your house, (home equity line of credit) so you can write off the interest you pay at the end of the year. Buy the wife a token gift from time to time as a smoke screen to distract her from the $10-15 grand you’ve spent on mods. Welcome to the madness we call 4Runners!

 

You’ll get most of your money back on resale anyway if you add the TRD Off Road package. So in reality you get a factory locker, nicer wheels, and an overall better looking vehicle for very little extra money.

 

@DummyDee12 If you're going to value anyone's opinion, hopefully somebody tells you to buy a different trim than they have in their profile. So far we've all been biased lol

 

The manual lever is a OR and ORP TRD thing, KDSS is a separate option on both.

 

I think he should buy a Limited. I would suggest he buy an SR5, but that's kind of what I have.

 

Looked at the limited.. Something about it makes me shy away. Haven't really seen those with the more aggressive lifted look with what im going for. Also feel like its body is a little different with the bumpers and side paneling on the bottom..

 

Yeah, I agree. It screams less "I belong on the trails" and more "I'm at home in the day care drop off lane". There are two guys on this site who merged their Limited's with the look of ORP's; and they did it very well.

Yeah that's nice.. But I bet that was a pricey build.

Want to stay as stock as possible but want the aggressive look. I guess ill be stuck to just putting on bigger all terrain tires. Maybe look into a lift once I know a bit more of pros and cons to lifting them.
