hello, my name is Tim and i am new to the ownership world of Toyota although i am not new to Toyota brand by any means. i bought my son an 2004 4Runner, and my daughter and 2005 4Runner years ago and my son in law owns a 2008 Tundra crew max limited.... all have withstood the test of time and are bullet proof. this alone turned me into an owner myself. my question is this, i bought a 2018 4Runner TRD Pro in Cavalry Blue. I have been told by a few people that these are limited edition vehicles with only 333 being made in this color for 2018. i do not believe that to be the case. can anyone tell me if this is true, false, or kind of true. if it is true, can you look at production numbers to verify it? can you look at the VIN to see what number i have in the production order. like i said, this may not even be true but nobody can give me a strait answer and i don't trust the dealer.... thanks in advance for any help.... Tim

Hi, I'm new here and will give an opinion. :hattip:. I don't think it is purposefully created as a "limited edition". As far as I know there are 3 colors that are exclusive to the TRD PRO enhancement package so we will have to see what the final sales numbers are at the end of the year to determine how many in your color were made. Maybe I am wrong and Toyota has decided it's only going to produce so many in that particular color but there is no information that pertains to that scenario.

You cant believe everything you hear. I also own a Cavalry blue 18 Pro and my salesperson told me it was the only one in Alabama. Maybe it was at the time maybe it never was, I did not let that sway me any in trying to get it for the price I wanted to pay. I think it is one of three colors offered on the pro model, maybe they made fewer of these than the other colors maybe they didn't, wont know till they make the last one for this year. Just drive it and enjoy it

    Great selling tactic.... sorta

partially what keeps our re-sale so high, creating the illusion of owning something everybody wants but there are "only" so many

Well over the past few yrs the “special color” on the Pro has been less obviously then the other two offered, but the exact number really is anyone’s guess. Toyota has never offered even the exact number of total Pro’s built since the introduction. The first year they did say that only 3000 total would be offered. There is unfortunately no special way via VIN numbers, etc to find out. I have seen numbers thrown around of 1000 or so for the special color. For sure they are pretty rare around my parts.

    http://toyota.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8372/~/how-many-trd-pro-series-vehicles-will-be-built?-how-can-i-get-one?
Old Toyota info from back in 2015.

    https://www.motor1.com/features/229907/7-things-2019-toyota-trdpro/
Looks like 2019 model info which says 5000 total for each model being made.

    https://www.carjojo.com/toyota-4runner-trd-pro/
This is a fun read. I remember reading this article while trying to find my Cement back in late May/early June of 17.

Each year there is a "Pro-Only" color besides the occasional supplementary gray, white, black, etc. 2015 was inferno orange, 2016 quicksand, 2017 cement, 2018 cavalry blue, 2019 voodoo blue.

The truth is, other than the one-off colors every year, they can make as many Pros as they want. All a Pro is, is an Off Road Premium without KDSS or a sunroof. None of them become Pros until they arrive stateside, where a task team exchanges the shocks and adds a few plastic badges and trim pieces. The reason why you can't get KDSS on a Pro is that it would cost more US labor hours for the shock and coil swap.

The one-off colors are definitely more rare though. I'd love a cavalry blue truck, just can't justify the $10K markup.

I’m from North Alabama. I actually bought the car in Tennessee grayflare. So you may have the only one that was sold in Alabama. Just curious what area are you from. But on topic, I didn’t think they TRD Cavalry Blue was as limited as the seller wanted me to believe. Especially since there is no documentation to prove or disprove the statement. I guess I can try to see how many were actually made after years end. I know mine is a south eastern model built in Atlanta. I was told that you can’t get a Pro with a sun roof. Only in Canada. Oh well. Who knows... I love the truck and will drive it till the wheels fall off.

Like I said! There will be a total for 4R’s sold for the year, but not broken down between specific trim/model type. Even if you call Corp to enquirer for specific info they will not have it. It’s a shame really! Also WTH does yours is a southeastern model built in Atlanta mean? LoL!

i was told that in the southeast you can only get certain trim options that are not available in other areas of the country... again, that is what the dealer told me... that they arrive from japan and if they are built in Atlanta then you get a specific package only available in the southeast.... obviously from your reply this would be yet another story told by a dealer to make it sound good.... however, i was buying the vehicle regardless.... i believed it cuz my sticker has something on it to do with the southeast.... no idea, lol....

if i read my sticker right, the southeast is the only place to get the 4runner predator package..... maybe the gunnar package is available in another area? does that sound right?

Those are regional or dealership packages. Not official Toyota trims or packages. Another one is the TSS package, if memory serves. It's basically an opportunity for a dealer to slap on a bunch of hokey bullsh!t and a hockey puck lift, then charge you an extra $4500.

The 5th gen 4Runner is really simple when it comes to trims. There's SR5 (standard and premium), Off Road (standard and premium), Limited, and the Pro.

Ha!! Yes, sorry you guys are correct! I know the Tacoma’s get extra stuff put on in that region. My bad just didn’t think it was the whole model lineup that it happens to.

I am from Central Alabama, I am also an ex dealership mechanic and have heard all kind of things come out of sales peoples mouth to sell a car. So I do my own research on the vehicles I buy (and there have been a couple). I do have a good salesman at our Toyota dealership that has never steered me wrong and I will not deal with any one else there unless it is the GM (who I also used to work with at a previous dealership). Between my wife and myself we have bought 6 Toyotas from him and have been treated pretty well for all of them.

The Pro is not limited to a certain number of vehicles produced per year. Toyota wants to sell as many as they can without having any remaining stock, but they do have a pretty good idea of how many they will sell in any given year. I can't imagine what the price of a Pro would be if it was limited.

Not even the Limited trim is limited.

Believe what you want if it makes you feel better. If your theory was correct you sure as hell would see a shit load more on the road. Every other trim is a dime a dozen with regards to sales volume compared to the Pro trim. Your statement is partially correct meaning it’s not a hard number each yr, but they just don’t keep building them to meet demand. Also, I will add it’s just like the T/X Baja package on the 2nd gen Tacoma’s. They sure has hell are pretty rare. Limited production sure. Anything less then 5000 units made is limited as far automotive production is concerned.

The reason you don't see more Pro's on the road is not due to lack of supply. Like it was said earlier in this thread, the Pro package is made at port by adding things on to a non-KDSS Offroad Premium. You don't see as many Pro's due to lack of demand. Many are not willing to pay $46,000+ for a different color and an overpriced suspension system.

That’s your opinion, however it’s not reality! There is a reason in most cases that before the 4RTRDP even gets to port it’s sold or someone already has a deposit on it. Facts don’t lie unless you like CNN or the MSM :). Have you went through the process to obtain one? I have and it was a bitch to land my Cement 4R. And sorry, there are a lot of people willing to pay $46k + for a limited run vehicle even though it is a “appearance package”. I am not one of them since I refused to pay anything above MSRP. Believe what you want, but what your saying is fake news other then the fact they come to port then have the Pro items slapped on.

This is how Toyota gets away with producing as few as they do without having excess. They know what the demand is going to be ahead of time. Tell me, for those who are willing to shell out the money for one of these, how many people are being turned down?

What I like about the Pro it is a limited vehicle that is hard to get. And they are holding there value really well. Where I bought mine talking to the salesman he said they cannot get them. There doing up off road models to make them look like a Pro. Holding value is a big thing with vehicles since most of them depreciate like crazy.

i think after reading this, there is no way to know if the 4R TRD pro is actually limited, is it correct that in the TRD Pro they only offer it in about 3 or 4 colors with 1 or 2 being the " color of the year" if that is true then i would have to assume that they have to be limited at some point... less than 5000 units .... is that considered limited? and i think that number can be achieved by toyota setting a certain number of Cavalry Blue 4R they produce For 2018 or simply they were only able to sell, lets say... 1000 of them in that color... either way it is still a rare limited edition car. as an avid watcher of collector car auctions, there has to be something that tells you in the VIN what the paint code is and possibly what the production number is. somehow there has to be a production amount listed and a production number .... my cavalry blue may not be a limited edition, but if it is then i would like to know where to find and keep the stickers and books to make it keep its value in .... oh 30 years from now..... i try to think ahead.... i wonder if the guy that bought the plum purple challenger convertible with white interior had these same questions back in the day..... or would it have just been bought cuz he liked it...... i don't know, and i don't know what makes a car valuable in the future....

Pretty much spot on. Each yr since 2015 three colors have been available with one being the unique color. White has been the only color to be offered every year.

I did some searching on Toyota website and did read that they produce approximately 1000 Pro's per year.

I can attest at the difficulty of attaining one as well. I called at least 10 dealerships and only one could get me one, 4 months out. The other 9 dealerships straight up told me that they would not be able to get me one. Seems like a pretty rare vehicle to me.

I have been waiting since March. I've contacted >3 dealerships and I'm on waiting lists at each. One dealer actually showed me the low production numbers by color in each region. I was told don't hold your breath we will do the best we can.... Hopefully 2019 is the year! So I can't yet say that I've been turned down. However, I cant just walk into a dealer and say I want one of the five 4runner Pro's on your lot like I can do with almost all other 4runner models.

Wow, I must be the lucky one. I was actually looking for an MGM 4runner TRD Off Road (whichever one had the black interior trim) with the options I wanted. I had been to the dealer numerous times looking to see if any had come in. Then on their website they posted a picture of a Cavalry blue TRD PRO. I told my wife "That's either the ugliest blue color or that picture is really bad." But I wanted to see what options it had so we went to look at it. In person it looked like a different color. My sales person came out asked if I was interested and went and got the keys. It had 6 miles on it when I test drove it. Came back , set down with my sales person and we hacked away at a deal we both could live with. I traded my 16 F150 and haven't looked back.

It can be hit or miss! Glad it worked out for you. My search for a 4RTRDP ended with a bizarre scenario! A Cement Pro popped up late one night on Cars.com. I was checking a few times a day for over a month and in most cases the vehicles was already sold. The thing that sucks when trying to track down one of these is that they are automatically put on the online sites, so using these multiple sites is more times then not a shot in the dark. I called the dealer the next morning which lucky for me was only an hour and a half away. This particular Pro was again already sold, but the twist on this deal was it was sold to one of sales managers and another unit Cement in color also had his name attached to it. It was for his wife, and after a nice long phone conversation advised me she really didn’t want it and there was a 90% change that he would sell it to me. We worked out a trade deal on my 17 Taco Pro, and about a week later on a July Saturday morning both Cement 4R’s landed at the dealer. A little luck and timing helps sometimes as well

I could have had two Pro’s. The dealership I Bought my last two Tacoma’s from had a Cement color in July 2017. Someone turned it down. I had the next shot at it. I did not go with it. Got my 2017 White Pro in September. Now that is what you call Luck. I have it almost year with 4000 miles sitting on it.

Not all dealers carry Pro's. I think that contributes to the stigma that they are hard to obtain. You might have to travel a bit, but if you go to a dealer that is known for getting them, put in your order at the beginning of the model year and a down payment, then you have a very good chance of getting one. They are essentially and order only vehicle. It's just that dealers do the ordering and stock very few on their lots.

But if you are in the market for a Pro right now, currently on cars.com there are 132 new Pro's for sale at dealerships across the country, including a fair number in Cavalry Blue. Shouldn't be too hard to get one if you're willing to go get it..........and pay for it.
