I noticed you can turn both on, or just one. Indicated by the green icon of the 4Runner going uphill and on riding flat.

I had crawl control on and crawling, but multi terrain was not on. If I just use multi-terrain and not crawl control, what is this function actually do (mud/loose rock, mogul etc..)

My understanding of it is that the different modes allow varying amounts of wheel slip depending on which one you choose. The terrain select modulates the brakes acting as an electronic limited slip differential.

Thank you @Dark Knight , I was wondering if that was the case but wasn't sure. I'd like to try out different terrains to put this to the test!

I feel like I wont ever use that shit. Engage locker and be done imho. That locker will be the single most help I feel. The other shit, I could do with out imho.

On the GX 460 you can't have crawl on while MTS is activated. You can run default 4H mode with MTS Mud/Sand engaged though.

As for what is MTS... think of it as variable and more intelligent ATRAC

Actually MTS is quite nice. For example going up a steep rocky hill with switchbacks you can choose the loose rock setting and just drive. You could probably just use 4L but the MTS makes it more effective . You don't need the locker or may not want the locker engaged due to the tight switchbacks. Just another tool and works like a champ.

Nice video and thanks @Pinam99MA Explains it in detail.
I can now see the concept and how traditional wheeling w/out this system you would cut the power (let off the gas and approach it slow) because your slipping, by doing that you lose all power to the front as well. This system will keep your momentum and put the control directly at the tire(s) that need it. Makes sense.

I thought that too. Until I went off road and used it, played with it. Now I dig it. It's not right for every situation but it is fun to play with and definitely makes some terrain easier. I hope to be in Colorado this summer and will be running Black Bear Pass - I intend on keeping ALL traction control systems in play.

I looked at it for my FJ. But for the terrain we have here it just wasn't feasible. Not to mention guys were finding weak points down the drivetrain line after going to a front locker. Just didn't give anywhere enough bang for the buck (for me at least).

After yesterday I have no interest in a front locker. 4Lo + A-TRAC + Rear Locker got me up all the same trails as the two F&R locked jeeps I was with. They were on 33s and 35s and aired down. I was on stock little Bridgestones at 35 psi. They spun way more than I did and mentioned some regret at all the $$$ they had just put into their rigs when I was going everywhere they went in a soccer mom grocery getter. ; -)

I might still add a Harrop e-Locker to the rear of my 460 but am very pleased with stock setup of my GX with ATRAC, MTS and crawl

Any 4Rs running the Harrop? I realize some models come stock with rear lockers.

Yes but only on the lowest Sand/Mud setting.

    Loose Rocks
    Moguls and
    Rocks all require 4Lo
