2021+ Bi-LED 4Runners - Using 9005 bulb for both DRL and with Lightbar

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for a help to find a relay like device /thing where I can use my DRL bulb both functions as DRL or turn on with Lightbar.

Condition 1 - If Lightbar is on the circuit is connected to Light bar wire.
Condition 2 - Else If Lightbar is off the circuit is connected to DRL wire.

Note - This is only for 2021+ Bi-LED 4Runners.

Functionality seems pretty close. Sadly the max power is 3A. A 55W bulb would draw 4.5A.

 

You’re wanting a bulb to be wired in series and parallel which would require 2 relays on the passenger side and 1 on the driver’s side. I would encourage you to study wiring diagrams to figure this one out. Use the light bar switch to trigger all the relays. 87a would be DRL. 87 would be battery or ground depending on relay. 30 would be to the bulb on the ground or positive side. 85 and 86 would be the trigger obviously

Edit: fuse your 87 inputs. This would also prioritize the light bar over DRLs. Would need to swap some wiring to prioritize DRL over light bar. You could also simplify to one relay if you’re just looking for half brightness on the 9005 halogen bulbs when the light bar is on. 3 are needed if you’re trying to have full brightness. Please also note that the halogen reflector included with the bi-LED headlights is not a proper high beam output.

 

I'm thinking more like 2 x DPDT relays or similar device. The coil is triggered by Lightbar. Normally the 2 DRLs would be on, since it double pole the series should work and when coil gets power and switch to light bar mode the wiring is in parallel, again with double pole it should completely separate from DRL mode.

Haven't found a good relay or device yet. As shown I need completely separate poles switching to the bulbs not a common ground. (Not sure if I'm explaining my need correctly.)

As for the bulb I might use a regular halogen as it's a trouble free DRL option. For bi-led owners might not have luck finding an LED very dim in DRL mode and yet give a good light output in full 12v mode.

 

You need to switch both legs on the passenger side since the “ground” actually goes to the “positive” on the driver’s side DRL. You only need to switch one leg on the driver’s side (12V+). This can be done with 2 standard 5 pin relays on the passenger side and 1 standard 5 pin relay on the driver’s side as I already explained. Or you can go exotic and try to source an 8 pin relay for the passenger side.

Here’s another route and more elegant if it works. Get some higher powered LED bulbs for the DRL/high beams that turn on with light bar. Get a set of 9005 extensions on Amazon and jumper the leads together and run a new ground for the passenger side. This will give you 12V+ and ground on both sides. Get a set of these. Wire the 12V+ DRL to the PWM input and the light bar 12V+ to the high power input. 12V+ output to the LED bulb positive. This solution will not work with halogen bulbs. It would be smaller, single extra wire to run to each headlight, and easily removed since all the wiring would be on the 9005 extensions.

 

Thank you so much for the details. I have a feeling the double pole method might be my best friend as I have 2 separate 9005 sockets for the light bar power and factory DRL 9005 sockets are still there.


Do you think this would be my ticket to achieve this?

 

Don’t see why it wouldn’t. Those relays look to be fairly large though and not dirt/water/road grime proof.
