Train horn/air horn

Yeah, and scare the shit out of everyone within a city block. Have you ever been near a train horn when someone set it off?

 

An air horn is loud enough for me, train horns are WAY too loud. I'm happy with a compact air horn like the Wolo, it's considerably louder than stock, but not obnoxiously (or possible illegally) loud for the street. dB ratings for sound are geometric, not linear in their numbers. So a horn that's rated at 150 dB is considerably louder than one rated at 130 dB. I think most stock horns are around the 100 dB mark, give or take 10 dBs, so even a 130 dB horn(s) is going to be significantly louder than stock.

 

Yeah, every 10 db is a doubling of apparent loudness. 132 db is the point of physical pain, IIRC.

Edit: I'm not sure why I thought it was 132, but 130 is the pain threshold according to some websites I looked at this morning.

I haven't heard anything like a Wolo in person to my knowledge. But, yeah, a train horn is stupid.

 

There's a guy that lives near me that drives a 2-door Jeep Wrangler. He has a pair of air horns mounted on the front, compressor-driven, and those things are LOUD, like illegally loud. I have no intentions of being "that guy", so if I decide the dual Fiamm Freeway Blasters I installed aren't loud enough, the next (and final) step will be a compact air horn like a Wolo. If I do end up installing a Wolo, I'll probably wire it up as an auxiliary horn, with a momentary switch on the dash somewhere, and keep the Fiamms as primary.

It's worse than that - every 3 dB is doubling, and 10 dB is a factor of 10 increase.

 

Every 3 db is a doubling of actual sound pressure. But 10 db is a doubling of perceived loudness, as I said.
