Too much lift!!! Time to lower my 4Runner...

So a while back I bought an OME 3" lift kit from Toytec.

They advised me on what springs to buy for my added weight.

• C4 Lo pro - 80lbs
• Warn Winch - 75lbs
• RCI Skid Package - 100lbs
• RSG Sliders - 150lbs
• C4 Gas Tank skid - 62lbs

The lift kit included

90010 OME Front Shocks
2887 Front Springs

60080 OME Rear Shocks
2889 Rear Springs

This gave me about 3.6" of lift on the front and 2.75" of lift in the rear.

I am now converting to
2885 Springs in the front
2895 Springs in the rear


These springs are what ARB/ OME recommends for my setup, not Toytec...
Long story short be careful about buying lift kits through resellers.

Always contact the manufacturer first.

I will be installing these springs this weekend and hope to provide photos of the before and after. Hoping to lower my 4Runner a bit and maybe even improve the ride quality. Certainly will improve the life of the CV's and other components on my rig.

What springs do you run front and rear and what lift did you get?

 

So ya like I mentioned, front lift springs are OME 2884 stock load and same spring rate as factory. 3" lift minus settling and added weight since stock

Rear are ICON 158506 2" lift springs (700lb spring rate?)

Bilstein 5100 on all four corners. Front shocks spring perch set to 0", first groove, stock ride height.

I plan to click up the front shocks to the first lift setting I think it's 0.85"once I add a center winch bumper.
This should I believe act similar to running OME 2885 lift springs

The adjustability of the bilsteins is hard to argue against. I typically recommend them to other 4R owners who want a mild lift with more travel.

I don’t regret getting the OME shocks. Just wish I would have done a little more research on springs and lift height. I know now that I will have better articulation with a 2.5” lift in the front. Hoping I’m closer to that after the spring swap! We’ll see

To my knowledge, the only springs ARB/OME recommends for the 5th Gen 4R nitrocharger kits are listed above in post #5.

There are many retailers recommending different spring combinations for different vehicles, different added weight, different applications.
While those spring combinations will likely work, they exist outside of ARBs recommendations.

 

This kind of fits with a question I had about Dobinsons coils because I see different information at one of the vendor's websites than what is on Dobinsons own website...and the difference leads me to a different coil depending on which I go with...

 

Exactly. Many vendors will recommend different springs based on their information.... Not Dobinsons recommendations.

Go direct to the manufacturer and ask them what they recommend for your setup.

 

For clarity, this post is not meant to be a dig at Toytec or any other distributors/ resellers.
Toytec advertised a three inch lift, I got a three inch lift. (More or less)

It is simply a post to help educate people who are buying from any distributor. Always contact the manufacturer for their recommendation before you purchase anything.

A spring swap in this case is a 400 bucks and an afternoon of work. Certainly not the most expensive mistake I've made! But I'd have avoided it if I had contacted ARB first.

 

My suggestion. Is go to the lowest possible height you can to clear your tires.

 

So toytec did you dirty?

 

So no lift? Lift won't help you clear tires during articulation. Only when driving around town. Still though, that is good advice for most people.
That said, extended travel shocks like Bilstein 5100 or even OME rears (OME fronts are not ET) will help a ton during heavy articulation. Stock 4R shock travel is not the best, especially in the rear.

My intentions for the lift were to add ground clearance. This is why I chose a 3" lift.
I know now that going so high actually lost me some articulation (and stresses my CV's.) I still need the ground clearance for the terrain I choose to wheel on, so I don't want to give that up entirely.
In my research I've found a 2.5" lift will be ideal for keeping decent articulation while adding some ground clearance. This spring swap will get me closer to that number. Closer, but not 2.5 exactly.

It is also what ARB recommends. I like this suspension quite a lot so I'll try these springs out and see if I eventually want to move to a proper mid travel setup (Dobinsons MRR) in the next few years.

 

No. I wouldn't say that. They were however selling springs with their 4R210 kit that ARB doesn't recommend. (I don't believe this kit is even still sold on their website... I could not find it last time I looked)

This isn't a toytec only problem. There are more distributors selling the incorrect rear springs for these shocks.
Some retailers don't even disclose which springs are on the kit you place in your cart. You only select load, and lift height desired... This to me is the worse case scenario.

Toytec at least let me select the springs by part number. Their recommendation just didn't fall in line with ARB's. If I would have contacted ARB, I would have known that.

Again though, most retailers seem to be selling the wrong springs for this lift kit. I am wondering if that contributes to the reviews of a harsh ride or ride height issues...

 

He already stated the reseller gave him incorrect info. This is not a ToyTec issue.

 

Lift does not provide more clearance for larger tires. Lots of folks run 285/70R17's with minor modifications.

 

OE front spring rate is 500lb!? I thought it was also near 600 oops

 

Fender to Center of hub measurements:

Stock targets:
20" Front average
22" Rear average

With current setup (2997/2889) *Full tank of gas, no driver*
23.25" DF / 24.00" PF = (+3.625" average front lift)
24.75" DR / 24.75" PR = (+2.75" average rear lift)

 

Based on the math my new lift height should be
+3.2" Front (-Sag)
+2.4" Rear

This should make my CVs live a little longer.
It should regain some articulation. (More available down travel)
It should also retain some positive rake which is what I want.

If the front sags too much I will be able to add top hat spacers. This will regain positive rake and also increase my effective down travel without changing the total front suspension travel. I would not do this with 5100's or any shock with a longer than factory (or "extended") length. Doing so would risk CV bind at full droop.
(Another note here is top hat spacers may require aftermarket bump stops be added to protect the shock from bottoming out internally)

This all works in theory. But we do not live in a theoretical world, we live in the real world.
I will be installing this springs tomorrow evening and measuring how my lift height changes.

 

I'm one if those people. I'm just saying the least amount of lift height the better.

I agree with this. Especially with the pro suspension. The front coils are already "long travel" allowing more droop.

Extended travel shocks set to stock height would be the best of both worlds. The only thing left on the table there is additional ground clearance.

Hell one of the main reasons extended travel shocks exist is the attempt to regain the articulation a lift causes you to lose.

If I had a Pro I might have kept the fronts and just upgraded the rear shocks.
Pro fronts are already long travel.
Idk about the stock TRD Pro rears... but most aftermarket rear shocks are long travel.

I agree that stock height has advantages on the road. Off road I'll take a basic OME kit all day. Much more travel, much more ground clearance.

There are way better kits out there as mentioned earlier in this thread. But even a basic nitrocharger 2.5" lift has some very big advantages off road.

 

Loaded up with lots of gear this was sitting at about 2.5" of lift height->

Looks wise I prefer a slight lift. But there are many advantages off road with off road suspension.

 

Whats the extended length?
OME 60080 is 23.74" I believe

 

Looks great. IMO Toyota's do not look very good jacked up with huge tires. Not like a full size pickup.
