New battery suggestions

I’ve been looking to replace my factory battery with something better. I don’t have a lot of accessories hooked up and not looking to mod the battery location.

Any suggestions on a direct replacement that fits that would be a better option than the Toyota replacement? Thanks.

 

If you can get the same battery they are pretty good. I believe they are a Panasonic?

AGM batteries are "better" but they require a trickle charge now and then and a voltage booster since they have more capacity. I was impressed with my Odyssey 24F AGM

 

Better in what way? Have you experienced trouble with your factory battery? My 2019 has about 130k miles and is on the original battery. Still strong, but going to replace it on a preventive basis. Going with a factory battery again because how much better could a different one be?

 

If you just need a battery to start the truck, the Panasonic is hard to beat. They’re super expensive if you can even find them.

Costco has pretty good OE sized replacements and they have an AGM 24F if you’re looking for something with more Ahs. Just be aware that the alternator will not keep an AGM healthy on its own.

 

I been using the Duracell Batteries for 6 years now in my Boat and my Tundra not the 4Runner yet however No issues with them the 4Runner takes a group 24F and the factory one is 600 CCA where the Duracell is 890 CCA there are 2 different levels you can get depending on budget, first one is regular at $139.88 then the AGM one is $199.88 and that has 825 CCA.

 

My original battery lasted 9 years/146k miles. I'm not sure there is a "better" battery available aftermarket.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm on my 2nd replacement battery. After the factory one, I replaced it with an 8 yr. old Optima Red-Top and now have an Interstate AGM from Costco. I kept the Optima and is currently on a shelf with a 3/4 amp charger.

 

Optima Red Top 35 will save 15-20 lbs compared to the stock battery while maintaining the cranking power. The battery has a lower height than stock, so you will need a replacement hold-down bar to avoid using the dodgy plastic spacer that comes with the battery. 1st gen Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ hold-down bar works; you can find those for cheap on eBay.

 

I'm more likely to buy a Walmart lead acid battery when my factory battery gives problem.

When tested my alternator doesn't have enough voltage to charge a AGM battery and I'm not willing to alter that by installing any kind of voltage booster.

 

I purchased an Energizer AGM (group size 78 tho) for my other SUV this weekend and was impressed that after getting it home, and bringing a meter to the posts, it was resting at 12.9v. Unusual for a battery sitting on a shelf that doesn't get randomly trickle charged..... date code was 9/23 too. Anyways, was $199 with a 3 year warranty, $20 core charge.

 

Had a battery die with no warning in a previous car (started fine in the morning, dead as a door nail in the afternoon) and had to get a boost from a coworker. I now replace batteries preemptively every 5 years before the winter.

I've had regular flooded batteries spill acid from the vents just transporting them a few city blocks in the footwell of a car. I strongly recommend an AGM sealed battery for off-road use. The flooded battery would still work after spilling acid, but your inner fender area may get heavily corroded. The plastic tray under the battery is Toyota's solution to spilled acid...

 

I am running the odyssey thing...but I am not impressed. It has lost its charge after 3 weeks of me not using the 4R, and I have to jump it, this in two different occasions. Maybe I got a bad one but I don't think I'll use this again. Panasonic is what I will try next.

 

Odyssey batteries are awesome, but you need a voltage booster and trickle charge it now and then. They are designed for capacity and charge differently.

 

I think it really depends on where you live, and that should be taken into consideration. For example: I live in Tempe, AZ. As you can see the life expectancy of batteries here is LOW. I buy mine from Costco, they are Interstate. I've only bought one because they need to be replaced every 2 years. The heat absolutely kills batteries. Costco replaces every time for free. No questions asked. Seems like I'm scamming them, but.

Costco just changed the battery replacement policy to be pro rated. It was too good to be true. Had to buy a battery last week and they made sure to tell me of the change

 

I was wondering when that was going to happen. Still a good deal if I'm replacing often, I think...

 

I've had good luck with Optima Red Top batteries which are AGM and I've never had to do any special charging with them in several different vehicles I like the fact that they are sealed so you never need to check the water level and as I recall the spacer that came with mine went under the battery (on the battery tray) so I could use the original battery hold-down hardware Here it is installed in my 2015 Trail Premium:

 

This is actually what I went with when I replaced my battery last November. No issues so far, and this battery actually did quite well in Project Farm's battery comparison test a couple years ago.

Costco battery is my vote also. Easy returns when needed.

 

I saw a discussion thread somewhere on Reddit where someone was being trashed for expecting a 36 month warranty to mean that they will receive one unit that lasts 36 months (like your situation and that is generally my expectation too since replacements sometimes explicitly have a lesser warranty) rather than a 36 month warranty meaning that it’s a guarantee of having something working 36 months of service only. (so if a warranty replacement dies within say, a month, but made it past 36 months of original purchase you’d be SOL)

Guess it varies on the fine print.

On a similar note, Shark Ninja’s warranty is a lie and you have to argue to get it (but well, I did get the part I was entitled to for free after arguing and they kept dropping the price multiple times) but don’t buy their things. (no the entire vacuum is not a “consumable” like a “filter”)
