5.0 NA V8 472 HP with 8 speed. Speeding tickets are my main concern.

3rd fastest car Lexus has made and 24 is anticipated as last year. This is for the wife so hoping it will satisfy the power I miss with 4runner coming from a Lexus V8.

 

Yes but average that out with the tickets you won’t get in a few years when we are all forced to drive rattly 4 bangers by the green yuppies that are no where near as fun.

 

Yeah I was kinda wondering the same thing. Maybe the fact that max towing capacity is lower for the 4R than the Taco? I tow a small boat with my 4R, only 1200-1300 lbs, and it does a great job. Can’t even tell it’s back there.

Agreed. Inline 6 is one of the smoothest engine configurations there is, and sounds different from a V6.

 

I've always felt comfortable towing in the 4Runner, as well.

When people say they suck at towing, I always wonder if they've ever towed with one. Or, maybe it's the situation we had a few years ago where people are trying to tow a cargo trailer 80 MPH like a maniac.

The gearing could definitely be better. But, I've never really had an issue towing with mine. Even well over the limit, I never felt unsafe.

Good information. I am on the fence on this one. The exhaust sound is like the rice burners driven by kids nowadays. No way I would buy the first model year or two. Will have to wait and see about reliability.

 

I have towed with both of my 2nd Gen Tacomas - both 2WD TRD Sport Access Cabs. I rented a tandem axle trailer to help my son move some years ago. I had no issues and the truck pulled fine even over some sea level to 1000 ft mountain ridges and the truck was not a dog in 4th (S4 in a T4R).

I think either one tows fine, really. I just thought it was weird for anyone to say that the 4Runner was somehow worse for towing.

 

Same. I pulled a Yamaha Waverunner with an 1800 cc engine and a full tank of gas in it good for 3 hours run time. I don't remember how much it weighed, plus the trailer, but the truck (2nd GEN 2WD Tacoma) pulled it just fine with good road manners.

You didn't say trucks. Take the "L" and move on.

 

6500 lb for the Tacoma vs. 5000 lb for the 4Runner. The 4Runner cannot tow as much while meeting SAE J2807 performance standards. Short wheelbase and heavier curb weight work against it.

Ok. Sorry I wasn’t specific enough. I thought we were talking about Tacomas (and maybe 4Runners). That was the thread. Not sports cars or lawnmowers or chainsaws. But your point is well taken. The Cummins I6 is a good sounding engine. The Ford 300 is too. Of course these are opinion statements—I’m not a fan of the Supra - Tacoma thing.

 

So what sound(s) do you like?

 

Very few trucks made today. The trend has been to smaller engines that sound so pitiful that car companies as fake V8 sounds through the stereo. It’s just the way it is now. Hence the “get over it”…cool sounding engines are becoming a thing of the past.

But truck engines that sound good in my opinion are most of the V8s Toyota and Ford have made. Ford still puts the Coyote in the F150 for now. The current Raptor sounds like junk—although performance is excellent. The 1st gen Raptor with the 6.2 was a beast. The 5.7 Tundras sounded good.

 

I suppose I should have mentioned that I was aware of the difference in towing ratings. If that's all it was about, then I guess I was over-thinking it.

Pumping fake engine sounds through the stereo is plain silly in my opinion.

I saw someone in a newer full size Ford flooring it down a side street the other day, and it didn't sound good at all. Not sure if it was a Raptor, though.

Of all common engine layouts, I think V6's tend to sound the worst. 4's can sound good with the right exhaust, but sound awful with most cheap aftermarket mufflers. V8's almost always sound good. I6's are less typical, but usually sound fantastic.

 

I can skip Gen 6 and 7 if necessary for 30 years and my Gen 5 will still be running strong (if gas hasn't been banned).

 

Inline 6, inline 4, V8…all nice and balanced.

As is my favorite configuration: the V12.

V12s are more complex, but you essentially have two I6s joined at the V.


The sound, is just glorious…



Granted, this is an extremely silly approach that costs a stupid amount, but for just a few thousand you can end up with something like this:

 

At 1:00 mark of the video it is a relief to see the turbo bypass is controlled by vacuum (unlike electronic on Tundra). That is promising at least it won't go into limp mode when electronics glitch out.

 

And that will likely make the used Camaro's and Challenger's prices to increase in the near future. The Mustang may be next (?) But it does seem today that the "truck" market popularity has over taken the muscle car.

 

The Jag would also look better if it was a classic 60s version…but when you can find them so cheap, it gets really tempting.
