People are not buying EVs

I just don't trust the technology in cold weather or on long roadtrips. My cousin's Tesla takes 45 minutes to charge, whereas any ICE vehicle can be refueled in a few minutes...

 

Oh, and my truck may have almost 188K miles and lack things like power windows and a blind spot warning system, but it also has no monthly payments! My cousin's monthly payment on her Tesla is like $700 a month!

 

How often do you take long road trips?

Also, unless you are driving a few hundred miles in a day, you shouldn’t need to be waiting 45 minutes to charge.

I don’t think we have used a public charger since we got our home charger installed.

 

Monthly payments have nothing to do with the powertrain.

That’s like saying that her blood sugar level is proof that EVs are bad. Literally nothing to do with each other.

Not hard to get a $700/month payment these days on a car.

 

I love my Tesla just as much as my 4R. EVs are great for certain people. If you don't have the means to charge at home they are a complete waste.

I installed free level 2 charging at my business for my clients, employees, and well.... at the time, myself. Most of us spend 6-8-12 hours a day at work, makes sense.

 

Well, interest rates these days are why I refuse to buy a new vehicle...

 

My cousin didn't have the rapid home charger last time I was there (July-August 2022) and relied on the public chargers for fast rechargers; I put over 20,000 miles per year on my truck...

 

Same. On top of that, I also put around 25K on my work truck, for a combined 45-50K.

Even if it's only a few road trips per year, I wouldn't enjoy having to stop for extended periods every 2-4 hours.

But, we're not the average driver. A lot of folks think an hour or 2 is a long drive.

I would never get an EV without plans to have a charger at home or at work.

It’s the equivalent of not having a stove or oven and having to rely only on eating out.

 

At the time I was out there, my cousin had just bought the car; I would not be surprised if she had a home charger now.

Also after having only gas stoves at home since 2007, I would never go back to an electric stove if I had a choice...

I drove the aforementioned cousin's Tesla Model Y while out in a California for a family reunion in July-August 2022, and I actually really liked it. However, the one thing that took some getting used to was that the car brakes automatically when I took my foot off the accelerator pedal...

 

Sounds like you got your first taste of one-pedal driving!

That, or regenerative braking like any hybrid.

Some cars have a one-pedal driving toggle, Mitsubishi has something called iPedal (although that doesn't stop the car), some don't entirely. I hope to try it out someday but no idea when that will be.

 

I would go induction. It’s a fantastic technology, and easier to keep clean than a gas stove top.

Once you get dialed in, it’s so much fun in the turns because you can fine tune your speed.

 

I'd put glass top at the bottom, personally. Being easy to clean is nice, but waiting 10 minutes or more for water to boil sucks.

Induction sounds cool, but the pros use gas so I'd put that on top.

 

Induction is faster, but would be expensive at commercial scale.

Apparently electric ovens are superior to gas ones, so if you do use gas for the stove, going dual fuel is apparently the way to go.

My grandmother used to use a wood burning stove, and was even able to make really good cakes using it. She later went electric because that’s what was available. Didn’t stop her from making Sunday dinner (lunch) for dozens of my family members every week in addition to her day job cooking all the food for the buffet at the small town restaurant she worked at into her late 80s.

I don’t know if they even had gas there. Never watched her cook because she got there before 6am, but everything she wasn’t cooking was done on a flattop.

 

I was talking about cooking shows. I generally see gas stoves on cooking shows.

I would be happier with either one than a glass top electric.

Dual fuel is definitely the way to go for an oven/cook top combo. In higher end homes, I typically saw electric double ovens and gas cooktops. It seems like it's split between gas and induction now for cooktops.

A plus that I’ve taken advantage of numerous times - you can cook on a gas stove when the power goes out.

 

If you live in earthquake country, generally not a bad idea to make sure that you don’t have any leaks before cooking.

 

I don't. I also doubt that those who do check for gas leaks every time they cook.

Whenever there’s an earthquake, one of the fun things you’re supposed to do is run around and check for leaks - and leaks don’t always happen at the appliances.

Occasionally fires do break out because of gas leaks after earthquakes. Thankfully it’s not common, but sometimes like after the Loma Prieta quake, you get damage to gas mains.

I definitely agree with you on induction, but you age to get special cookware for it. Also, why'd you'd leave #3 empty?

 

The coil element burners cook better than glass top in my opinion, but they are ugly and a pain in the ass to clean.

 

And if you have a gas water heater, you can take a hot shower with any residual water in the tank!
