This isn't because people genuinely want SUV's and Trucks; its because the car buying population is being convinced they need SUV's and Trucks.

Domestic manufacturers have all but discontinued every car offering "poor sales" while never advertising them, offering incentives, upgrading/updating them, etc... and them kaboshing them. Now we have 16 year olds driving Yukon's to school and Grandma driving a 2500.

One publication called the Honda Ridgeline the best midsize pickup a few years ago, while also saying that it wasn't good for towing, off-roading, etc.. you know; truck stuff.

Or maybe it was because all of the cars were turning into small underpowered unreliable junk. Check out the lawsuits against Ford for their Focus, Fiesta and other junk mobiles for powertrain issues. People got ripped over those eco-boost econobox rolling caskets.

The best midsize truck can indeed not really be a truck if it fulfills the functions that most people use a truck for.

It’s a minivan with a pickup shaped body. And it probably is far better for how most people really use their trucks.

Yeah, how dare they make their low margin vehicles worse in a way to steer people to the ones that make them a lot more money and exploit regulatory loopholes.

You folks know how energy dense diesel is, right? Those 18 wheelers with combined weight of 80,000 pounds, get something like 3 to 6 miles per gallon on the freeway. Good luck turning those things into electric, welcome to reality.

Sort of like how we don’t have electric trains?

For big rigs, the solution is going to ultimately involve electrical infrastructure along highway corridors.

    Short answer: votes.

Longer answer: because corn production is big business and politicians want to win votes from corn producing states as well as receive political contributions from the businesses involved.

Doesn’t matter which party. They both hold out their hands, and it’s all legal.

Nope, the future is hydrogen. Cummins is working on their fuel agnostic motors, 6.7L and 15L hydrogen motors. Toyota and Yamaha are working on a sweet sounding hydrogen V8. We know what happens when Toyota and Yamaha get together, last time they made the Lexus LFA.

He's not gone, I think he's still among the top. I think Toyota did this for PR. Did you watch the review of Toyota's EV by Car Care Nut? He says that it looks like Toyota made this just to tell the world that they also have an EV, other than that they have put no effort whatsoever into it lol

    https://electrek.co/2023/12/01/ford-f-150-lightning-breaks-monthly-sales-record-november/

Ford Lightning sets new sales record in November
Farley said the company sold nearly 4,400 electric trucks this past month, an over 100% increase compared to last year.

The uptick comes after Lightning sales fell by 46% in the third quarter. Ford told Electrek in September that “F-150 Lightning production is starting to ramp after a six-week shutdown.”

Ford said it was on track to triple EV pickup production after revamping its Rouge EV plant in Michigan.

In October, Ford sold 3,712 Lightning models, up 52.4% over 2022. The record November sales performance comes despite Ford scaling back on EV investments.

Hydrogen won’t be used for big rigs. Takes too much energy to produce and the evaporation issue is a huge problem when you’re worried about fuel costs.

On the serious note, hydrogen is not only the future of cars, it is the future of all our energy needs. Scientists super recently discovered how to diffuse hydrogen with a non-nuclear method, that is a gigantic discovery, it will revolutionize everything.
Do you think you know more than Cummins who's investing billions of dollars to create their 15 L hydrogen motor?

You may not be a consumer of Cummins, I am. I can't wait to get my hands on a Ram 2500 powered with 6.7 l hydrogen motor, to replace my diesel.

Cummins says it will go into production in 2027. Ram is their biggest customer, I'm excited, Ram 2500 will go hydrogen soon.

    No. It can't.

I think you missed the point. Calling something the best midsize truck while saying that it isn't good at doing truck things is fucking stupid.

If people buy pickup trucks for buying groceries and going to the mall, that's their own choice. It doesn't make the Ridgeline a better truck than actual trucks.

If you want to debate whether most truck buyers really need a truck or not, that is a whole different conversation.

Except it does do the things that midsize trucks buyers need out of a midsize truck to the extent they need it, while being a better actual vehicle.

It’s certainly more capable than the Ford Maverick.

Across the pond, the vehicle of choice for the trades tends to be vans - both the Transit/Sprinter/Promaster(Fiat) variety, but also the smaller versions like the Transit Connect or the Promaster City (also Fiat) - so it’s not out of the question that a van based vehicle could make for a decent midsized pickup.

It's like talking to a brick wall.

It's fine if you want to say that the Ridgeline is a better overall vehicle. It almost certainly is, compared to actual trucks.

But, you can't call something the best "truck" while saying that it's not a good truck.

I’m not saying that it isn’t a good truck - I’m saying that although other trucks may have certain aspects where they perform better, the combination of what it does well enough and it being a better vehicle makes it a better truck from the perspective that you are picking the best vehicle in a class of vehicles called midsized trucks.

Cummins doesn’t really have a choice but to try to do something on the internal combustion front.

That’s what they are known for.
