What parts to take with me for a long trip with my 4Runner?

I plan to have a long trip with my 4Runner next year and it could be far away from Toyota dealers, probably some gravel roads. I'm not very technically inclined . What would you recommend to take with me? Air filter,...??? What else?

 

Not being technically inclined and a cargo area full of parts is probably not going to lead to a very successful situation should the need arise.

The 4Runner is super reliable. I don't forsee breaking anything on paved and gravel roads outside a freak ococcurrence. The biggest thing that will leave you stranded are tires. Buy good tires, know how to access your spare, and how to swap it. If you're going to be faaar from a tire store, I'd recommend getting a full size spare. I'd also get a tire inflator that will let you air up and down.

I'd skip getting random parts. Yeah tie rods break, and water pumps go out. But the idea of replacing those in the middle of nowhere is unlikely and unneeded.

I just drove last summer 3,000 miles in four days from coast to coast. I brought a small medical kit, tire inflator, plug kit (I don't have a full size spare). No issues.

Some others may be along to suggest some essential items I may be forgetting. But I'd skip bringing an extra alternator, etc.

 

Just have it looked over before you go, and as @PVT Pablo said, just be prepared when it comes to tires. Make sure your spare is in good shape and able to be lowered, and I'd suggest a good compressor and a tire plug kit.

A lot of times you can plug a tire without even removing it from the vehicle, I recently had a flat on mine and did that. Much less hassle than messing with the spare.

I carry a spare inner and outer tie rod in my off-road bag. Truth be told I probably don't even carry the tools to replace them, but I once saw a video where a 4R had to be left on the trail after a tie rod failure. I figure cheap insurance if I'm out with a group.

I second this, plus...bring a gas can and a pretty girl to look at while you're driving on your road trip.

 

I doubt my wife will allow me to take a pretty girl with us

-first aid kit and even a fire extinguisher
-Jerry can fuel container ideally mounted on exterior
-Truck tire inflator (I use a 120v compressor in rear cargo on the inverter)
-Tire plug kit
-spare tire with its drop chain pre-tested and lubricated (I bumped up to a full 285 spare to match my four)

Also
-full water storage container
-battery jump starter, and external battery device (I use NOCO Boost Plus GB40 1000 Amp 12-Volt UltraSafe Lithium Jump Starter Box, Booster Pack, Portable Power Bank Charger)
-socket sets and torque wrench
-wood and/or jack stands and wheel chocks
-optional tie rods, crows foot socket
-optional ball joint replacement kit, large socket

 

AAA Card, credit cards and cash

 

Water, fully charged phone, cash, comfortable hiking shoes! Relax and enjoy the adventure!

 

Make sure you have Load E rated tires.
That's about it, minus a good jump pack.

AAA Card and get the "Plus", Plenty of miles on their tow plan. Cant beat it.

 

If you're going to be in areas with no cell coverage, it might be a good idea to bring a satellite communicator like a Spot, InReach etc.

 

E rated for highway and gravel roads? Seems excessive.

 

As the others mentioned- tire inflator, tire plug kit, jump starter, first aid kit, extra water and maybe some snacks in case you do get stranded, basic self recovery gear.

Make sure you have plenty of fuel before you venture off the beaten path, and/or extra fuel in a proper container.

Someone mentioned being in areas with bad cellular coverage. If possible, download offline maps of the areas you're going to be so you are not reliant on cell coverage to find your way back.

 

Good call on downloading maps! Buying a state atlas with detailed maps of the area travelled might also be helpful for planning and backup for the backup.

Bring extra drive belt-even a cheap one. These rarely break but if they do.

 

Some recovery gear. Think if you need to be pulled out by someone that doesn’t have recovery gear … they only need a trailer hitch if you have all the right stuff. Also, what would they attach to if you needed to be pulled out nose first? Maybe add some mounts in front to help you be safely pulled out vs the vehicle tie down points.

Also a couple of cheap, hand held radios. So one of you can spot id needed, and you can talk to each other without having the window open (due to rain, or mud slinging).

 

Only part i bring for my 4R is an oil filter kit because it's so vehicle specific. The rest is all my camping/off road gear.

 

I would add maybe spare hoses. Mine (2019 SR5 Premium) has only given us a problem once when a technician failed to replace a drain plug in the rear diff and it got fried in the middle of nowhere. Valvolene covered a new diff and axles. I have retrieval "stuff", a first aid kit, tire inflator, jumpers, small metric socket set, Crescent wrench, screwdrivers, hot sauce (a must!), TP and paper towels, CB. All fits in 3 small equipment cases on the roof. We travel down the east side of the Cascades and Sierras once or twice a year in late Spring and/or early Fall=good chance of snow, migrating deer, etc. Also, usually across the desert to Flag and back through Vegas. If legal, a handgun!

Good point! I actually have a Gazetteer in each of my vehicles, just in case. I used to refer to it as my analog GPS.

 

Good idea anyway, especially in places like eastern WA, OR, all of Nevada, NE Cali, NM==not all dirt roads are delineated=make sure your Nav chip is up to date (just changed mine- ~$20 on Amazon)

Just to resurrect this...I am looking at a recovery kit. Suggestions? I was thinking two soft shackles, a 30 ft rope, 50 ft strap and a snatch block. Thoughts?

 

Sure .. get one. I like the yankum gear. Two ropes (ones 5 years old, and 4 soft shackles, 2 are the same age) I dont have any use for a snatch block. I dont have a winch.
