Don't make any right or left turns. Just pick straight routes to everywhere you need to go.

Wait is your 4Runner lifted or nah? You say "stock lift" so that's kinda confusing.

Probably need to do a cab mount chop too. I’m not rubbing with 285/70/17 but I have a 3” lift and did the cab mount chop, removed front mud flaps and trimmed a little on the wheel well just to be safe.

also remember that some 285/70/17 tires are taller on the same size. For example. the MT will be a bit taller than a AT tires.

He explicitly stated that he wanted 285 tires WITHOUT changing the stock suspension setup. Since you guys said that you have 3" lifts and cab mount chops, my advice is technically more catered to his situation.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

king 3" lift kit, fuel vectors, 285 toyo mt's, oem audio 500q, morimoto hid headlights, morimoto led fogs,
You cant run 285's on stock lift. No matter how much trimming you do.
I'm with the others I have 3" lift, CMC, total chaos UCA's and trimmed inner fender plus removed mud flaps, still minor rubbing sometimes when on heavy articulation off road scenario's. Course I have toyo Mt's which are the tallest off road tire cause of the 19/32 tread depth, most are 16/32. Sorry.:(

@Offroadking what is your intent with the 4Runner? Looks? Function? Budget?

As it’s been stated, 285’s on a stock suspension will not work. If your intent is looks and function with tires I would recommend a lift first then tires. This will minimize the amount of hacking you are going to have to do to your new 4Runner.

I don’t mean to be a dick but I would recommend sitting down and planning out your modifications based on your intent with the 4R before you go and hack it up to make things fit and work.

I'm tempted to try bolting my 37's on... Pretty sure I couldn't even with the rig on jackstands.

I recently put 33s and 5100s front and rear (max 2.5” in front). Had rub at the very front on extreme turns and when backing up. I did what is shown on this video and slightly trimmed the underside of the bumper (you can’t even see it), and it is perfect now.

I have 285s on a non-lifted 2018 with no rubbing under normal maneuvers by just moving the inner liners forward as far as I could and fastening them in new holes. I also had to trim the bumper material though I could still trim it a bit more if necessary. I also compressed the front mud flaps to the rear and zip-tied them to the frame thru two small holes to hold them to the rear. So far, so good. The stock ORP wheels are 7.5 inches (TRD PRO wheels are only 7 inch) and that may help make things fit a bit better, too.

I had the same on a 2010 stock height Limited and had to remove the mud flaps also. It did have VERY minor rubbing under certain steep turns into driveways, etc.

Off-road might be another issue, but on-road has been no problem at all.

This makes sense to me. I know folks all say you need lift to clear 285s but I have been thinking that if it is just lift, once the suspension compresses the tires will be rubbing. So I am thinking what you actually need is clearance in the front (bumper) and rear (mudflap) like you have created. Now, once that is done, lift or no lift, compressed or drooping, there should be no rubbing.

    No?

Correct. Bear in mind, though, that wheel width may determine a lot, not to mention back space. I had 8.5 after market wheels on my 2010 Limited and the result was fine for me. The 7.5 inch ORP wheels may be letting me get away with something that couldn't be done with a narrower wheel. Also, under certain extreme turns, twists, compressions there can be a tiny contact, but it's very rare and I still have more material on the bumper I can trim.

I have the same Runner and wheels as you so in theory, this should work for me as well. Provided I go with the same Nitto Grappler tires.

    Always saving pennies for more
Every vehicle is going to lift/fit a tad different. What works perfectly on one 4runner might not work on another. 1engineer on t4r.org made about the handiest chart ever:

    fnqyqh_1fe55a24a97d5d35fa758a27d3aabe700652a458.png

That being said, I have a 3" toytec suspension lift, JBA UCAs and am running 1.25" spidertraxx spacers on my 14 Trail. The tires are 285/70r17 Pro Comp ATs. The front fender liner had to be altered, about 3/4" trimmed off the bottom of the front bumper, front mud flaps were removed, and I am knocking out the body mount chop this upcoming weekend. The body mount chop is a close one....I only get rubbing at about 7/8 to full lock, but I'm gonna do it just to be on the safe side.

Spacers add to the rubbing issue. My 34" tall previous tires fit fine with no rubbing. I am only using them because I am a big fan of the oem trail wheels and my UCAs require more offset than the factory wheels have with tires bigger than 255/80r17s.

How much of a difference between a 275 and 285 is there anyway? They sound almost identical in size.
