Hello, I have been reading this forum for a while now and just traded in my 2003 gray for a 2018 gray Premium SR5 4wd. I am mainly a city driver but would like to make it look a little more bolder. From reading the forum, it sounds like there is no option just to level the truck by just raising the front an inch. So I am looking at a 3/2 Ready Lift or Pro Comp lift kit. I don’t want to mess with the factory ride so don’t really want to change the suspension. In talking to the company in Houston who I will have do the job, I was looking at either the Fuel Trophy D552 or Fuel Podium D619. I have a gray 4Runner and thought Anthracite with black would be a good look. The shop is saying to go with the 18/9 rims cause they think they would look better with 285/65/18 Toyo Tires. I am torn between going 18/9 or staying 17/9 or 17/8.5. And should I go with 275 or 285 tires etc... I want a broader stance on my 4runner but am a low maintenance type guy. My questions are:

1: thoughts on the 2 leveling kits mentioned if I have to go that route
2: can you just raise the front and level it without the back
3: I like the thicker fuel podium spoke vs trophy but does anybody have experience with either, what would look better?
4: would 17 or 18 inch Rims look better and which tire size do you think would optimize the wheel well and look the best?

My first time modifying and appreciate your input!

I vote for 17" wheels. They look/ride better and the tires will likely be cheaper.

If you want to be cheap on the lift and only raise the front to level it out, I don't suggest blocks. Get Bilstein 5100 front shocks And set them to the second notch with your stock springs. You won't be able to clear 33" tires with anything buy a full lift. Your best bet is staying with the 17" wheels and wrapping them with 275/17's and not the 285/17's. If you want 285's, bite the bullet and do a complete lift. Headstrong Off road has great prices and are very helpful and also ToyTec lifts are just as good on the customer service. Need any other advice or explanation, let me know. You can check out my Instagram to see vehicles I've worked on. There's a few T4R's in there.

I just added Bilstein 5100's set at .85. That will level your 4runner perfectly. Remember, you are leveling your frame, not your fenders. It you go 1.75, you should add a 1" rear spacer for a level frame. You don't want reverse frame rake, and you will have it if you go 1.75 and don't raise your rear 1". My buddy did that to his 4runner and he was very unhappy, he ended up dropping his down to .85.

At .85 you will get 1" front lift, which will give you about 1" front fender rake but your frame is level, which should be your goal.

I did lots of research before I did mine. If you google 4runner leveling, you will get so much info. Go to to 4runner.org also and you will find tons of threads on leveling your 4runner.

Also, don't get to crazy with your wheels size and tires. You are heading down a road that will kill your MPG's and give you a rough ride.

Thanks guys! So to level it just add blisteins to the front and set at .85 and leave the rear alone? Do bilsteins help eliminate front in drop when braking? @karmatp, Do you have any pics of yours? Where did you buy the trd wheels? I have the factory wheels and tires on my 2018 SR5 Premium m 4wd. Am looking to change them out or maybe powder coat them black, if I don’t go with new Fuel rims.

5100's are a firmer shock and they will get rid of the nose dive. That was another reason I added them to mine. I don't have any pics after photobucket destroyed themselves. I had posted some on T4R.org. Like I said, search Bilstein .85 4runners and you will be taken to threads with lots of pics. The TRD wheels were purchased from a dealer out of state. A year or so ago a guy was posting on Tacomaworld.com with his dealer info who had lots of stock. That is how I got mine.

Another place to visit is TacomaWorld. Go under for sale, wheels and tires and you will see dealers selling hub centric wheels made expecially for Tacoma's and 4Runners. They are all made to fit Toyota's perfectly. You don't want lug centric wheels, or at least I don't after I had some on my old Tacoma, they can give you vibes driving down the road if one lug is tighter than another.

Just search, all your answers on easily found on the web.

@karmatp thanks for the info. I read that all aftermarket wheels, like the Fuel Trophy are shipped with hub centric rings to make them hub centric. So, it sounds like if you have the hub centric rings installed on a lug centric wheel, it makes it hub centric. Any truth to that?

As long as the ring fits good to both hub and wheel.

I was reading about people going bilsteins set at 2.75 with 1 inch rear cornfed spacer or bilsteins set at 2.5 with 1.5 rear spacer. Is there any issue going with the 2.5 setting on the bilstein(rubbing, potential other issues caused by it etc...) Per your guidance I am gonna no to stay with 275 70 R17s just not sure which lift would be better looking. Also saw people adding spider trax spacers on the wheels to push them out. Just trying to figure out why bilsteins with spacers vs 3/2 spacer lift kit using OEM shocks. Some like the all spacer lift and some don’t. Appreciate your insight. Getting close to moving forward.

I'll put it to you bluntly, you have roughly a $40k vehicle that you want to upgrade your suspension. Do an upgrade, not a spacer down grade.

Fair enough and i agree with you. is Bilstein 1.75 with a 1 inch spacer a good upgrade? does Bilstein 2.5 with a 1.5 inch spacer a better upgrade? somebody mentioned that going 2.5 on Bilstein would cause rubbing or a more harsher ride. Just don't know it that is true or not. Are most people going with the 1.75 with a 1 inch spacer? I am looking for a bolder stance without causing any other problems. in the end i will go with 17 inch wheels and 275 70 R17 tires of some sort.

Take a look at Bilstein 5100 shocks on all 4 corners. Then use OME 884 front springs to pair with the bilstens. For the rear, either a Toytec or Icon springs will do you good. This will improve and upgrade your suspension at the lowest cost of an actual upgrade. From here you can move up. Google search Head Strong Off Road, call or email Marie, and tell her I referred you. You want a mild lift to clear next size up from stock tires. If you want to further upgrade the suspension to Icon on up to ADS or King coil overs, well, have at it. And trust me, there is a major difference in ride quality for the money you'll pay. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thanks for the info. i will reach out to Marie and let her know. What setting of the bilsteins are you saying to go with? I assume the bilsteins are only adjustable for the front correct?

With OME 884 coils, set them at the lowest setting, or zero.
