    Hi All,

My lady and I are having our first kid (due in March!) and I'm thinking I may have to jump ship. The reason is that we have 2 dogs that we take camping/offroading with us, or even just on family trips in general. One dog is just too boisterous/hyper to sit in the same row as a newborn! Seriously, her tail is like a bullwhip and it leaves marks on my shins. I like the idea of segregating them behind a second row with their own sliding rear window to bark out of.

I seriously love my Tacoma- I thought I'd be buried in it. Phoebe's all paid off and I still love driving her every day. With kid(s) on the way though, maybe now is the time to switch.

Definitely looking at 5th gen, Trail/OR or similar. Trying to look for used examples in the low 30's. Truck KBB is about 21-24K.

Can someone comment if all T4R are tow equipped, or are there special tow packages I should look out for (similar to Taco)? Occasionally tow a buddy's CJ and my own project car around.

I notice that I'm not using the bed nearly enough to warrant it- other than moving my motorcycle a few times with it, most of the camping/recovery/snowboard junk that goes in there would fit just fine in (or on top of) a 4Runner. I think the thing I will miss most if I make the switch is driving stick.

I went from a 14 TRD Off Road 4X4 to a 16 SR5 4X4 4Runner and it was the best decision of my life. It is such a better vehicle than my old Taco, 100% Japan made does make a difference. It tows my utility trailer great as well.

I went from a 17 Tacoma to a 17 4Runner and legroom for the kiddos was a big factor. They were cramped in the truck even though they are 6, and 9 years old. The 4 Runner has a ton of room in the back and the seats recline for longer trips. My kids love that. Otherwise I am very happy with the 4R.

I have a 2013 4runner my girlfriend has a 2013 Tacoma. We drive the 4runner allot more then the Tacoma because it drives better, rides better, and it's just more comfortable. As far as tow package I'm pretty damn sure they all have a tow package. We have a little utility trailer that we tow a couple quads on. The 4runner works just fine but Tacoma might be a little better. Good luck with your decision.

I trade my 2015 Tacoma TRD Sport on my 2017 4runnner Pro. I do not regret it. I have more use for suv than my truck. Also more comfortable taking friends with us. And also more room for my 2 Akitas. If you get the towing package just rent a trailer if need to haul anything.

Thanks guys. I had the truck detailed today and will post it on TacomaWorld tomorrow to see if there's a private buyer who'd be interested.

Tough part is finding a T4R with a good price! Dealers won't budge an inch on them. There's a 2014 Trail Premium near me listed at a "no haggle" $37K and 18,000 miles. New truck can be had for $40K!

I'll keep looking and scouring the classifieds here to see if something floats my boat.

Keep looking, one of them will budge. I ended up buying mine at Molle Toyota in KC Missouri. They came down much more than other dealers in my area.
    Never hurts to ask.

I’ve been lurking but had to register just to post on this post!

I’m in the same boat. We have 3 Golden Retrivers. I have a 13 Tacoma DC that will be paid off this year. My DD is an 08 Prius (weeee) that we currently haul the dogs around around in every weekend.

My wife has a new GTI.

We both drive a lot, but we are going to start trying for kids in July. She actually just asked if she should go see the Dr get ready to try as early as May. Yikes.

But I’m in the same boat like I said. My Tacoma is my truck, I love it to death and it’s great. I don’t drove it a whole lot, still has less then 40k on it. But when I need it I need it. And I enjoy driving it so sometimes I just drive it.

But we need the cargo room, I don’t use the bed that often anymore (bought it when we bought our house.) and I have access to my coworkers Tacoma or Colorado, or my fathers Tundra.

I’m happy to meet someone that’s in the same delemba I’m in right now- and it sounds like a 4R with a hitch rack is probably the best bet.

So far the best pricing I’ve seen was a ‘18 Off-road for $34900 +ttt. I’m not sold myself if I want the Premium. I’d like heated seats but don’t need leather. Figure I could install my own with some nice seat covers for cheaper maybe. Worry about the dogs with that softech stuff. I do want the KDSS (I think) and that’s abailable on each.

If you’re looking for good pricing check out Koons Toyota. I used their internet price to buy my Taco from another dealer. Best price I’ve seen in my state MD/VA, was Priority Toyota.

A few buyers are circling now, just want to make sure everyone gets a fair chance to check the truck out before I let her go.

Took Cheri to test drive a T4R and she loved it- she doesn't drive manual often and it's way easier than the Taco for her. She also loved the roomier back seat and interior cargo room.

Still on the lookout for a TE or TEP... a few local to me that are in Barc Red, I am hoping for MGM if I can score one. Do not want the sliding cargo rack and too many seem to be equipped with them.

Sorry to sound dumb but what does MGM stand for. I've seen it in a few other posts and can't make heads or tails of it.

The softec 'leather' or whatever Toyota calls it is synthetic leather. It is very durable. I've had my 4Runner for almost 2 years now without any damage. Thats with guys wearing military gear and throwing all kinds of stuff on it.

MGM is Magnetic Grey Metallic, an exterior color option.

I am in the same boat, and I just saw a white 2018 TRD Offroad 4Runner at the dealer for $36k, it might be worth looking at new? When I bought my Tacoma, it was a better deal for me to buy new than used.

My wife and I wanted a specific trim level and color. Naughty Blue, non KDSS, no cargo slider TP. We waited about 2 months before a dealer local to us got one in. We were talking with a different dealer that wanted to buy our 6-speed manual, '14 DCTRD Taco. We traded the Taco in for the dealer that came through with the T4R TP we wanted. This is our second 4-Runner.

Any reason in particular you opted for no KDSS? Just curious.

Basically, we just wanted the color and I didn't want/need the slider. And our own internet search turned up very few Blue ones. So when we found a dealer in our area that finally got one, we asked them to hold it so we could buy it. The build sheet didn't say KDSS equipped and I was okay with that. I'm not worried about the lean in cornering, I'm used to it because I got a Jeep TJ with very pliant suspension.

There are a lot of vehicles out there that depreciate very fast...There are many reasons why Tacoma's and 4R's don't. Think of it this way - Compare the amount of value you have lost over a given period of time with a Toyota compared to just about anything. That's money out of your pocket. One of the reasons that many buy new.

Very true. I sold the Tacoma last week and was able to get $24K for it- from $31K when new. That's 77% of its original value, and about $1200 per year of depreciation. Not bad!

Nearly decided on a CPO 4Runner now, should be pulling the trigger soon.

Yes I did sell privately, just for a laugh I brought it to a dealer for a trade-in assessment. They said they wouldn't be able to do more than $16.5K, and wanted to sell me a 4Runner with a 5K markup. I bit my tongue and walked out.

Last year I traded in my Taco for a 4R. I was pretty hesitant because I loved my Taco and the price of the 4R was intimidating, it literally took me two years of debating to finally pull the trigger and get the 4R. But once I did I couldn't have been happier. Finding an OR in the low 30's might be hard. Im sure you know Toyotas hold their value better than any other car company, which is great, unless you're trying to buy one lol. And I believe all the OR/Trails come with the tow package included.

I personally don't like leather seats either but the Softec material Toyota uses seems better than real leather. A big plus of the leather for me is that they dont absorb all the dirt and crap the will inevitably get on them. Theres a ton of different seat covers you can put on if you're worried about the dogs tearing them up.

Found my truck and pulled the trigger this weekend. I'd been looking for a month before I found one exactly the way I wanted it.
    • 2016 Trail Premium w/KDSS and no cargo slider
    • 15K miles, 1 owner
    • CPO (7 year/100K powertrain warranty)
    • Still has a couple months left of Toyota Care (probably will only get 1 free oil change at 20K before 2 years is up).
    • Previous owner had installed 5 KO2 tires in the EXACT size I wanted (275/70) (about $1100 just for tires).
    • PO also added Weathertech floor liners, which is also what I would have gotten ($180).
    • Listed at $36.5 (most of the ones w/options I had been seeing were being marked up higher than the price of a new truck)
I flew from LAX to Portland (on points) to grab it. The dealer knocked off the price of my flight ($200) to bring it down to $36.3 before TTL. I couldn't ask for a better deal than that, since the trade-in value alone is around $34-35K. I consider the total cost to be cheaper than that since the tires were exactly the ones I would have swapped on! Willy at Ron Tonkin Toyota even picked me up from the airport at 11, and my test drive was going back to the dealership. I was out the door by 1:30PM. Spent the night at sister-in-law's house, then drove all day Sunday through beautiful Oregon forests and down the Californian eastern Sierras.

    Very happy camper!

I still miss my truck sometimes, but the 4Runner rides similarly enough to feel the same. Still miss driving stick but other than that, the family and I are happy.

We took a 1000 mile trip through northern Arizona and Nevada last month. Wife, 4-month old, and two pit bulls, everybody's stuff. Rode through 108° heat and up/down 5000 foot elevation gains/losses with the AC blasting full time, didn't phase her at all. Couldn't have brought the dogs in the Tacoma like that!

I will miss the stick as well but that's one of my reasons for going with an auto. MY gf can't drive my truck and it's a real pain in the ass on long trips when i'm driving the Entire time. Nice looking 4 you got sir I dig that color!
