New TNGA-F Platform For the 4Runner - What Do You Think?

    What do you all think of the new TNGA-F platform that will be used for the 4Runner? It's the same platform used for all of Toyota's body-on-frame vehicles: Tundra, Tacoma, Land Cruiser 300, Sequoia and next will be the Land Cruiser Prado J150 platform vehicles: 4Runner and GX460.

    Toyota says that by just using seven different TNGA platforms they can cover all of their vehicles. They said that they can make the platforms longer or shorter and wider or narrower depending on the application. So by looking at the new 2024 Tacoma we get a very good idea of what the next generation 4Runner will be like.

    I will miss the 1GR-FE engine mated to the A750 transmission! Say hello to the 2.4 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder with an 8-speed transmission.

    I’m excited to see it in action. Wish my Tacoma had that dual VVT. I’m curious by this time next year if the photos come out like the Tacoma did.

    It's smart for Toyota to do this.

    Basically, us 4Runner owners will get a beefy frame that could handle the stresses of a full size vehicle.

    As far as the new motors go, I think I'll be most appreciative of the big increase in low end, usable torque.

    Me too. The 317 lb-ft turbo would be a lovely torque upgrade and the Hybrid Max looks like an irresistible torque monster. I'm wondering if the new 4R will offer more than one powertrain or if they'll all be Hybrid Max and $60k.

    Agreed about the torque! I might go test drive a Taco once they're on the lots just out of curiosity. I think a lot of the whining will stop once people actually drive them. :D

    I think they'll offer both the 2.4L turbo and the hybrid max.

    Base price close to 40k. Trail Hunter/Pro up to 60k.

    I was looking at the new Tacoma and the Prerunner would be my choice -- no need for a sedan-type crew cab -- but I'm not sure if the six-speed manual is offered in the Prerunner. Why don't they just offer the six speed manual with all the engines that can take it?

    The new Tundra has a separate cooling system for EACH turbo…..separate water pumps for each, separate cooling lines for each…..separate radiators for each….completely separate from engine cooling AND the intercooler……too much complexity for my taste for the long term. This is what convinced us to buy a 5th gen.
    Hopefully the new 4R doesn’t follow suit but most likely they will.

    It's hard to imagine the 4Runner getting the turbo V6 of the Sequoia and the Tundra - so it's a safe bet they'll drop in that turbo i4 of the Tacoma.

    And I bet you they'll build the 4Runner on the same assembly line in Mexico as the Tacoma. No need for the Tahara plant anymore when the Tacoma shares the same platform.

    I agree that the 4R won’t get a V6 but the Twin turbo 4 will probably get the same complex “bag of snakes” plumbing.

    The 2.4L in the Tacoma is a single turbo. Not a twin.

    The internet says this is a Bronco 2.7L. As long as any future 4runner doesn’t look like this.

    How many connections are there that could leak?
    I did a rough count from that pic and came up with at least 23 hoses w/2 connections per hose and that is just what I can see.
    46 possible hose connection leaks just in that pic.

    This is a picture of the 2.4 turbo, according to Google. Doesn't look too bad to me.

    The current V6 also doesn't make over 300 LB/FT of torque at 1700 RPM's.

    Plus, we'll have 2 less cams.

    But, I'll admit that I'd be pretty disappointed if the engine bay looked as ridiculous as the Bronco's.

    Almost as if the designers weren’t afraid of figuring out how to internally plumb whatever it is that needs to be plumbed around.

    That bronco engine looks like a Borg cube from star-trek, it assimilated everything around it. It also looks just like the cube that a car crusher spits out. Or a house with external plumbing and electrical wiring runnkng around the outside walls because it was easier than running it through walls. I could go on…lol

    That is a Toyota PR studio photo, most plumbing deleted. Not an apples to apples comparison to the “in the wild” Ford engine pic. Let’s see what one looks like in the same circumstances as the Ford.
    We shall see how it goes, personally I wouldn’t touch one for a few years.
    Toyota makes great stuff but they have laid a few eggs in the past.
    I keep (good) vehicles a long time.

    The new turbo charged 4 cylinder will have more HP, but I still like a non-turbo V6, and the current engine in the 4R is one the best Toyota motors ever made. That would be my absolute favorite engine if it had another 30 - 50 hp and an 8 speed tranny. Just not a big fan of turbos when it come to longevity.

    Have you looked at the specs at all?

    HP is similar, but torque is WAY better than the current V6. And, the current V6 has plenty of HP, but could use more low end torque, which is exactly what the turbo 4 is going to deliver.

    Of course, longevity is unknown at this point. But, more usable power is going to be nice.

    Agreed, but I just am not a fan of turbos on the maintenance side. When they go bad, it can be expensive repair, usually around $2k, and the labor is between $500 and $700. So if you DIY it, it would be around $1,300 to $1,500. To be to fair, turbos can easily last over $100,000 miles now days; so some of my concerns from 20 plus years ago are probably a lot less likely.

    On the plus side, the V6 in the 5th Gen 4Runner is one of the best (if not the best) engines Toyota has ever made.

    I would guess the oil change intervals are on the new toyota turbo engines are also 10k miles. Can you imagine what those oil interval wars are going to look like? :p

    Let me kick them off. Anybody changing less frequently than every 4000 miles on a turbo 4 hates their car, and their money!

    Also, if you dont let the turbos cool down before shutting off, you’ll crack your turbo clean in half!

    I think the standardization of frames is genius from a manufacturing perspective and a little surprised it wasn't done earlier. Same for engine and transmission options. I know some sharing has been done in the past but increasing interchangeable parts should vastly reduce manufacturing costs and replacement parts costs. Hopefully the frame has better corrosion resistance and that manufacturing savings is somewhat passed onto the consumer

    Ehh. It has longevity, I'll give it that.

    Definitely not the best. The 5M would be on the list, along with the 1jz and 2jz. Then there's the UZ V8's. And, for being bulletproof, the 22R/22R-E and the FZ series I6's. I might give it top 10. :notsure:
