I just bought a 2021 4Runner with 50k miles and plan to make it more off road/overland capable. I thinking of how I should proceed. Its currently stock with highway tires, no other mods.

    I'm thinking...
    1st Shocks. Probably Bilstien 6112 front & 5160 rear
2nd Wheel and tires with -12 offset and Falken Wildpeak M/T tires, sized not to rub.
3rd Front Bumper (CBI, C4 or Demello undecided)
    4th Rock Sliders
    5th Skid Plates
6th Roof rack & ladder (probably Pinsu)
7th Rear bumper (no swing outs, only for ground clearance).

I'd like to pay as I go and not go into debt, so this might take a year or two.
Do I have my priorities in order?

    Just my opinion:
    Tires first.
If roads will have large obstacles, then skids and sliders next.
If just fire roads, washboards etc, shocks 2nd.

Tires and a full tank of fuel. See where you want the truck to be after using it. Don't go adding weight if not necessary.

Try to do tires and shocks/lift at the same time, makes doing the clearance for tire rub easier. Front springs on the coilovers need to be rated for your bumper and skid plate weight when you get them. It will ride stiff until then, but putting armor on and finding you dont have enough spring rate sucks.
285/70/17 are the most common upsize in tires.
Also if you do a body mount chop, opt for the DRT relocation kit or something similar. More expensive, but is the strongest and will help keep the crumple zone in tact better than a chop.

welcome. And if the option is one thing at a time.......then tires/wheels first, but again these are only opinions. There are a million lift kits out there that do different things, depending on your trim level of T4R. Familiarizing yourself with the vehicle (even if it's a sports car) will tell you a lot in the direction you feel you want to go.

Tires first a good set of AT is needed for off road improvement. Some skids and sliders next for protection depending on how difficult your trails will be. I would add all your weight before doing suspension. All the mods add up and change the vehicle handling and suspension needs.

I think the big question is what size tires. If you are going bigger than stock extra steps may be needed stuffing the bigger tires.

Welcome and pretty much agree with all the notes above from the gang. Enjoy the stock vehicle for a little while - Enjoy the mpg because after you execute your entire plan it would be a different beast all together and mpg will suffer.
    Pictures if you can.

Tires first, make them clear. Then skids.

    so........

You'll need to select springs based on how much weight you are putting on and you may not know that until you're all done with your bumpers and skids. If you're not going coilovers then springs aren't that expensive and maybe you don't mind buying twice, but you also may need multiple alignments.

for fewest suspension augmentations and alignments you might want to try to quickly do all the sliders, skids, bumper, roof rack as you may change your mind as you go until finally putting it on the car.

Maybe do wheels and tires first to give it a good look for the sliders and bumpers. But if you're very dead set on everything you're putting on then you'll be able to know what weight springs to go with so could do wheels, tires and suspension first. Get that lifted look immediately which is really cool.

You really want to figure out what size tire you want to put on. That's going to dictate how much effort you need to put in in terms of cutting your bumper and stuff.

Go with aluminum skid plates if you are doing skids. Trust me. That weight adds up. I have steel. I'll eventually be replacing with aluminum.

Remember to look around and figure out what UCA you want to go with. SPC is probably best adjust-ability, rebuild-ability, best value.

Glad to hear your feedback on aluminum skids. I went aluminum for weight savings but second guess myself if going steel for strength would have been better.

Nah. You'll probably never use them and worst case is maybe you have to buy a new skid. Whereas the steel is just too heavy. Handling characteristics start to change with a lot of weight. Braking isn't good. You need the heaviest damn springs..

Echoing all of the above, mostly about tires. You don't specify which model 4R you have, but if it's the Off Road variety, you probably have one of the best oem or aftermarket wheels available for a 4R. I wouldn't get rid of those, just put some 265 or 275 AT tires on and head for the trail. If you don't have an Off Road, newer take-off wheels come up for sale on this forum continuously.

I located a 4x4/Overland shop near where I work. Like many said here, the owner recommended tires & wheels first (I want to keep my stock rims with freeway tires). But he also recommended the Bilstein 6112 Front and 5150 rear shocks suspension kit. He said it will ride better than stock and better Offroad. I'm thinking of going with Falken wildpeak a/t3w 285/70/17 on Method wheels. I don't want to have to break the bank or into my retirement, but I want a capable offroad vehicle to venture into some remote places where I can shoot. I might also go with a -12 offset on the aftermarket. The shop owner said that will require some chopping of the wheel wells, but nothing that would affect the structure of vehicle. My 4Runner is a 2021 SR5 with 50k miles. Just bought it used, looks clean and drives great.

Don't forget a spare tire if you go second set of wheels and tires in 285. Not recommended to use the 265 spare with the 285's.
