I agree that the dipstick is the final word. But the discrepancy would drive me mad.

If you don't have proof it was changed, change it. Same goes for trans, diff, transfer case, coolant, power steering fluid, etc.

By the way, I’m very happy that my oil filter wrench has the slots for the tabs. I just did an oil change last night, and there’s no way on earth the housing would have survived if it I used the old school hex cup type. It was extremely hard to turn this time. Maybe because I wiped out the inside of the filter chamber walls and didnt lube the o-ring sufficiently? I dont know why, but I had to use the 27mm socket option so I could get a 1/2in breaker bar on it. I was literally flexing the engine in the mounts before it started to turn loose, and it stayed hard to turn until the o-ring cleared the barrel. The tabs have little indentations from the force, but otherwise, no damage.

You take that manual aside, look at it directly in the eyes, and tell it “you sir, are advisory…a mere formality. I’ll take your advise into consideration, and rest assured, it’s been duly noted. But you sir have NO constitutional or other authority to dictate to me what you are advising.”

Then look over to the dipstick, and nod knowingly. Be comfortable in the silence that will follow. That silence will be necessary for the manual to understand what’s up.

Haha. You must be much less insecure than me. I’d be wondering what I did wrong. I’d be counting and recounting the empty bottles of oil. I’d be growing a beard, just so I could scratch it in puzzlement. I’d be counting up the dozens of oil changes I’d done in the past, trying to bolster my confidence, but still wondering what could have gone wrong this time. And I’d be plagued by the memory of my first oil change, back in 1976, when I forgot to replace the drain plug before adding the new oil, and the look on my dad’s face as he was telling me I was grounded until I scrubbed all the oil off the driveway. Oh wait. TMI.

FYI, I just checked my oil level after this weekends oil change. Good old Mr. Truth-teller is telling me that the 6.5 I added is about 2mm above the top dot. Well la-dee dah! I’m going over it’s head and consult the manual!

    It’s probably fine. Right? :bananadead:
