    Hi everybody,

I actually do not not have a 4 runner right now. My plan is to purchase one in the not so near future. I run my vehicles for a long time.

I currently have a 2000 Explorer that I have had since 2002. I upgraded the stereo system some years back, and equipped it with a Warn multi mount 9.5ti winch.

A year ago I had a new Jasper engine and tranny installed, along with new fuel pump and a few other things. Something goes wrong I have it fixed. I live in the northern half of Wisconsin and I could jump in it right now and have no qualms trusting it to get to either coast. I have roughly 20,000 miles on the new engine and tranny.

Where the 4Runner comes in is that I plan on replacing the Explorer eventually. Rust never sleeps and I don't plan on having any work done in that department. I've looked into it and I decided it's a losing proposition. Knowing that I will be replacing it I have pretty much decided on the Toyota. Thought about a Grand Cherokee but to me that would be a cop out.

What I will probably do is get a 4 Runner a year or two old and maybe have it rust proofed professionally. Wisconsin is very hard on vehicles. It does not get in a garage at all. Scratches I don't worry about. I hunt and my vehicles get dirty inside and out and get scratched up.

So there is my introduction. Any advice on rustproofing or the 4 Runner itself would be appreciated.

What question?? I saw a pretty girl that's all.

Seriously though I don't have an answer. There is probably some sort of frame coating you could do. I live in an area where we don't use salt on the roads.

    Just bought dat bish
There are many ways to prevent rust on your frame. One way I don't recommend is any kind of rubberized coating. Like you said, rust doesn't sleep and it gets in to the imperfections of the coating. My first recommendation is fluid film, but this is pretty much something that should be applied yearly, but can be done yourself. Next is to use POR-15 to coat the frame with, but for it to be 100% effective, you pretty much have to remove everything from the frame and coat it that way. When I lived in Pennsylvania, I would wash the undercarriage at least once a week during winter months to try and mitigate any rust issues. That worked fairly well, especially for not having the frame treated at all. It is really a great deal of work to coat the frame correctly. My advice is to buy from a place that doesn't deal with frame rust issues like the southern states, and start there because you'll have to prep the frame before applying any rust proofer, and if its already been through a few winters, you've got alot of prep to do.

    Is plasti-dip a mod?!
I use fluid film, it works really well. It’s a little messy, but worth not having rust!
