Aftermarket Double Din Install

Hi,
I have been considering replacing my factory head unit in my 2010 SR5. It is just the complete basic head unit. No Bluetooth, no steering wheel controls, no satellite radio, no USB's in the vehicle at all and non-JBL. I was liking the Pioneer AVIC-5200NEX with the Bluetooth, Navigation, satellite radio compatibility, iDatalink and Apple play. I've found everything I need at Crutchfield. But, my question is how easy is install? I'm mechanically inclined, but don't have much experience with aftermarket electronics. Please let me know your thoughts on the Pioneer as well as install!

If you get the correct wiring harness and terminate the connections correctly, I think you'll be just fine. Any problems, I'm sure crutchfield customer support will be super helpful.

 

Thanks for the response! I'm really close to pulling the trigger on it. I've thought about getting it at Best Buy and having them install it. But, Crutchfield is so much cheaper. I saw where you can pay Crutchfield $30 to splice the wire harnesses, so it sounds like it would basically be a plug and play. I just don't want to get frustrated when I'm doing it and start telling myself that I should have just went to Best Buy and had them do it!!

 

My experience with best buy (install dept) was that they were crappy/ abysmal/ teenage-esc/ lousy in their approach to wiring. If you are mechanically inclined and can read, I am SURE you can install your double-din unit MUCH more professionally than they. As also mentioned previously, Crutchfield is a first class act. JMHO. cheers. This is also predicated on the belief that you are 1/2 as anal as I am when it comes to something you want to own for years.

 

I was kind of thinking the same. I think I'll tackle the job myself. I am very particular about my 4Runner, which is why I do all of the work myself. It was difficult for me not to align it myself after I lifted it. If only I had an alignment rack!! Thanks for your thoughts!!!

 

I actually just did this install in my 2017 SR5. Install is incredibly easy. Dash is pretty easy to get apart. Where in the States are you located?

It simplifies install considerably and works great. It was literally plug and play, I retained my rear OEM camera, steering wheel controls and the USB plug on the dash so I could plug my phone into that to run Android Auto vs running an auxiliary USB cable which would look tacky.

Thanks for the info!! I was just checking out the 4200NEX on Crutchfield and it keeps showing the 4201NEX with a back up camera. It comes with a kit that has the same dash kit that you have, the wire harness and the idatalink maestro interface, which I really want because I love data!! I don't have any steering wheel controls or Bluetooth. I just have the basic CD player with the aux jack that I plug my iPhone into for my music. That's great that it is pretty much plug and play. It looks like I can get all of that including Sirius radio for $769.00 with a $100 rebate gift card. What are your thoughts on this setup? By the way, I live in Omaha, NE but was born and raised in South Jersey. The USAF brought me to Nebraska and I stayed went I got out to be with my oldest daughter. Again, thanks for your help!!

 

@liftbike I ordered the Pioneer 1330NEX from Crutchfield yesterday. I got the Sirius Radio antenna, the idatalink Maestro and the dash kit that you used. I currently do not have a USB port, but the 1330 comes one in the back along with a 58" cable. I was thinking about running it into the center console so that my phone is plugged in to use the Appleplay and in the console out of the way. After reading your post, you planted the seed about upgrading the speakers in my head. Did you only replace the front door speakers and dash tweeters? How was that install? Were the door panels difficult to get off?

 

Hey there... How did the install go? What did you think of the dash kit? I've heard that the color may not match perfectly.

I'm hoping to do the same thing that you did to my 2015 4Runner SR5.

 

Dash kit I mentioned above was a perfect match. It isn't OEM quality but if you massage it a little cut off a couple small plastic leftovers from manufacturing it's basically OEM.

Speakers were easy to install, but I have experience here. It probably took me 20 minutes per door or less including taking apart the doors, removing the old speaker, adding the speaker mount, etc etc. It's really quite simple.

The dash tweeters are a different story. If you're serious I can add a much more involved explanation. There is cutting, soldering, etc so you don't have to cut the OEM wiring.

 

I was just on Crutchfield's site looking at the various speakers to replace my stockers. It looks like the dash tweeters are fairly easy to access. Did you have issues?

Did you install an AMP and if so, where did you place it?

Congrats on the install. The stock system isn't that great and I'm looking forward to replacing mine..

 

No amp, used the original wiring which runs them parallel with the door speakers, which requires the inline filter that is included with the tweets.

I do have a sub I added, self powered which makes a big difference obviously, but left the rears alone. They make no dicernable difference to the driver and front passenger sound and would be wasted sound space.

 

Which sub did you go with?

I had experience with them in the past, I had one in my 2012 FJ, moved it into my 2012 370z, I sold the Z and off it went with it, I had the 10 inch version. I really wish I had gone with the 10" again.

I "upgraded" to the 12 inch version, but regret it, but it's too late now. The 10" sounded better, played more accurately and was less "boomy".

I would highly suggest one of these, while they do eat up a bit of rear end space, they are removable so you can carry stuff and throw it right back in.
