My new ORP arrived this PM

I’m going to test drive it and inspect it at 1000 tomorrow. Kinda anxious in a weird way. I have been waiting so very happy it’s here. Hoping nothing wrong with it as far as shipping damage or some factory defect? So I want to bring it home and start enjoying it. Coming from the Takara plant, I figure it’s about as good as it gets w.r.t. initial quality. Anyone out there ever had similar feeling? Just wish I knew now it’s good.

for a vehicle such as a 4Runner that has been assembled for many years in Japan, i wouldn't break a sweat at all lol.

 

it probably stems from all the information you've been gathering in this forum and your easy going manner through it all, so i sort have been anticipating this day and am genuinely excited for you.

 

Advice: On your test drive get it up to speed, at least 65mph. I didn’t, I just drove it around town ~40mph. Mine had a steering wheel shimmy on the way home that day between 60 and 65mph. Tire was out of balance.
Kinda depressing to have that happen on a brand new vehicle on the very first drive/day.

 

What did you do about the shimmy? Did you take it home and then make appt with service? Or did they balance the tire before you bought it?

The optional black TRD wheels were swapped/installed at port, they took the tires off the ORP wheels and installed them on the black wheels. I think the balance job there left something to be desired.
Since I didn’t get it up to highway speed during the delivery test drive I didn’t feel the shimmy. The wife and I came back the next day during the lunch hour and the service manager was eating in his office so I went in for a chit-chat. He said the shimmy can be common in trucks, I said not brand new $50K trucks, then I essentially dared him to take it for a test drive. HE did and felt it and HE made the service appointment. I am super glad that HE admitted the problem and it is documented. Tires have a mark on them from the tire manufacturer that designate the heavy side to be aligned with the lighter valve stem area. The tech found that my right front tire was mis-marked almost 180 degrees out. He road forced balanced all four and it drives good now.

I still feel bad about your shimmy. Our 4Runner was flawless. To those of you new to the site 2ndGen22re and I got our 4runners at the same time last year.

 

Been awhile, how goes it?
It really took the wind out of my sails that day, my wife tried to cheer me up but it didn’t help much. Zero issues since, all is well now.

We are doing great. The 4Runner is working out good for the family.
We haven't put many miles on it compared to other people in our group of buyers.
I am only at 7300 miles.
We did change the oil before 5000 miles because I didn't feel right about going the 10,000 miles that Toyota say is good for the first oil change.

Congrats on the new ride. Only thing I found on my '22 ORP upon delivery was the paint on the frame in front of the L.F. tire. It was scuffed and literally worn off to bare metal in spots. Looked like it had been strapped down there on the ship or transport car carrier and the strap was loose. Not a big problem but I did clean off some rust that had started and bought a can flat black hi-build enamel fleet coating and repainted that section. Otherwise no issues.

We haven’t even broke the 4K mile mark yet.
Our longest trips have been to medical specialists for my wife’s vision. At this rate we won’t even break 20k before the 5yr warranty expires.
I only drive the new 4R when my wife is along, otherwise I still love driving Goldie just for its simple mechanical ‘honesty’. Rowing the manual transmission, roll up windows, no gizmos…..etc, for some reason just makes me feel relaxed.
I love all three of my vehicles, my pickup also for it’s raw diesel feel, I will never sell that either. My wife has asked me if I wanted a new truck and she couldn’t believe I didn’t.

Congratulations. I picked up my 23 SR5P last night. Looking it over I was reminded of the build quality. My last Tacoma was a great truck, but there were noticeable gaps in the body panels and the overall quality was no where near the 4Runner.

 

The wheel shimmy is definitely a thing on port installed wheels as my ‘21 Venture is equipped with the Pro wheels and while I did not notice it until the first tire rotation, one or both of the back wheels were out of balance.

 

Well I’m home! The 4 Runner is great! I was able to drive up to 80 mph ( briefly) , mostly 60-70 on Interstate. No steering wheel shimmy. I was able to find a grassy area and actually engage 4 LO, 4 HI, MTS (Hi (1st setting) and Lo range), Crawl, Atrac and Diff lock. They all worked. The condition is amazing. The most remarkable thing about driving it (compared to my past Tacoma) is the vehicle feels heavy and more solid probably because it is a few hundred pounds heavier. It was very cool having the sunroof open and rear hatch open (partly). I crawled under it at home and I don’t see any rust. Looked good at wells and around spare tire. I also can pleasantly report all my U-joints have grease fittings. Over on the Tacoma forum I am hearing many don’t have zerks. I prefer them to be serviceable. I noticed the A/C condensate drain line really works well as its 85 F hear in Ft Mill (adjacent to Charlotte). I plan on installing the heater hose mod to direct condensate below the frame. On my precious Tacoma the drain line protruded directly thru the firewall and was parallel to the ground. On this 4 Runner the drain line has a 90 degree elbow pointing to the ground. I would have expected them to be the same. Below is a few pics.

Looks great. Congrats! Man, I love Lunar Rock. If you haven’t, the screen protector for the display is a great thing to do as the screen is quite prone to scratches.

 

Congrats. I would say I'm jealous, but I'm not (mainly because I already have an identical one except without the sliding cargo tray, which I didn't want). I'm sure you will love it.

I love the Pics. Lunar Rock is such a sharp color.
I've had mine 2 years, and yes I was just so nervous at first after spending so much on a vehicle.
But 2 years on, I still look back every time I park it, and I smile thinking of all the memories I've made driving it.

Looks fantastic. Lunar Rock was my second choice but I was allocated a Lime Rush ORP which was my first colour choice. I also come from a Tacoma so am excited to see you prefer it. The Tacoma is light in the back end so bounces around the road. It was better with my topper but did not feel planted on the road. I prefer serviceable items so am glad to hear it has zerks. My 2016 Tacoma did, while my 2020 Tacoma did not.

I didn't notice the growling coming from the front of mine until I got it up to highway speed. But, I had a Toyota specialist replace that needle bearing with the ECGS and good to go. But its always good to get it up to speed and see what's what.

You'll love it. I have about 117k on mine. Been down many mountain roads as well as highway. Nothing squeaks or rattles yet. The only thing that fell apart was that fiberish piece on the inside of the front wheel that separates it from the engine bay. So been impressed so far. Just lots of oil, fluids etc as maintenance items. I had a rental 4Runner with 20k on it and the only difference was the steering felt a little tighter on the rental sine it was a year old vs 7. Enjoy!! (better tires is a good thing to do right away )

 

Looks gorgeous and look at all that clearance above in the garage! Time for a 3" lift, 33" tires and a new roof rack!!
