Is 2023 TRD Pro 1" higher than other trims? 285/70r17 question

    Is it correct to say that the 2023 TRD Pro sits 1" higher than the other trims?

    If so, can the TRD Pro fit a 285/70r17 tire, no lift without rubbing?

    There are many threads about the max tire size without a lift, but they are mostly SR5 trims and some TRDOR trims.

    Correct. The PRO sits 1" higher in front.

    I believe they also come with the fender liner modified and possibly a slight bumper trim. If anything, this is the only thing that will help you actually clear tires.

    Lift doesn't clear tires, unless you never leave pavement. As soon as you flex the suspension, it doesn't matter how much lift you have. Alignment and trimming are what actually clear tires.

    I'd like to add; I thought I remembered reading that some have cleared 285's on a stock PRO with the PRO wheels. If I were trying to do this, I'd go to a good alignment shop and ask them for as much caster as possible while keeping everything else in spec. Some folks have gone above spec on caster to get the tire as far away from the firewall as possible.

    Wheel offset is another factor I forgot to mention above. The more negative offset, the more likely you are to have rubbing. But, too much positive offset can cause the tire to rub on the suspension components.

    Stock wheels, stock suspension. I wouldn't consider minor plastic trimming a problem at all.

    Many refer to 285/75r17's here. I am talking about 285/70r17. Slightly smaller.

    I don't think you can get much more than 3.5° of caster on a 5th gen with stock arms. Then you need some amount of cross caster so it drives straight on crowned roads so driver side will be less.

    Not nearly as many folks are running 285/75/17 as 285/70/17. 285/75/17's require a lot more work to clear, usually including a body mount chop or relocation, significant trimming, and hammering on the firewall.

    I think TRD Pro is about 1 inch taller in front. Sadly my group does not have a stock SR5/TRD ORP to do a proper test. If anyone with stock SR5 / TRD ORP around Parker CO I can bring a stock TRD PRo to do a quick video and share info with others. Park right next to each other measuring with the same tape would give accurate results I guess.

    As for the tire fitment I got some rubbing with stock height. Here's the long story short.
    1) I did trim the front bumper and moved the fender liner forward and used a blow torch to flatten the mud flaps before hand.
    2) Since I have good relationship with the discount tire near my house I already discuss that we will test fit one tire and if it doesn't work out will revert back.
    3) I picked the smallest tire options in 285/70R17 size, Cooper AT 4S & Toyo OC AT3. Since I'm violating wheel width requirement when Discount tire gave me both tires to check before the mounting day Coopers had a shallow bead area vs Toyos had a deep bead area (not sure if the wording is correct). So I picked the Toyos and schedule the appointment.
    4) On the install day we fit one tire and did a quick test and its was minor rubbing. So I gave the go for all 5 tires and planned for the alignment.
    5) After mount and alignment the tires still had rubbing. So I got Cornfed 1/2in spacer from a member in this forum.
    6) I got the spacer really fast and installed on top of the strut and after it settle and alignment the tires cleared where it was rubbing (barely). Below is a pic.

    The things I would have done differently (I think) -
    If I used a little bigger lift like WestcottDesigns where it gives lift from both tophat spacer and spring preload collar in front I would have cleared bit more. But I was not comfortable messing with the shocks installing that preload collar. It was scary to watch how they do it. Why I opt in just with the top hat spacer lift.

    I wish I could go with a cleaner job with eibach TRD Pro spring lift, but sadly they don't have for 2021 and newer TRD PRos.

    Anyways when my stock shocks go bad (and they are not re-buildable as far as I know), I will go with a proper suspension lift with adjusters.

    **I was also hesitant to lift rear as I think stock rear TRD Fox shock may not be good with lift. I see my Ironman shocks extent more than TRD Fox shocks. So may be I should use proper shocks when lifting rear to match front.

    Forgot one more item. Cornfed spacers have 3/4 one that is very closer to WestcottDesigns / Eibach advertised front lifts but I was scared the proportion of height front to back because I'm not lifting rear.

    From dealer window shopping, it does appear the Pro is slightly higher. I should have brought a measuring tape.

    Looks like 285/70r17 are a no-go without a lot more work than I want. Maybe 275/70r17 would be a better upsize from stock with no rubbing on or off-road.

    I didn't find an option meeting my needs in 275/70R17. I needed non Load E tires and 3PMSF rated tires, also weight needs to be less as well. The only tire I found was Nokian AT Plus or something like that which was Load C and weight was 45lbs or something like that. But when I went in person to look at the tire when it arrived at the Discount tire shop I did not feel comfortable putting them on trails I take normally.
    When I look at Coopers and Toyos 285/70R17 SL they were 45lbs and 47lbs. Also they were relatively the smallest around 32.7. I wanted to try Baja Boss AT which is 32.8 but I was scared that it would not clear until I get a good lift.

    The TRD Pro is 1" taller up front with the Fox suspension. I put on the Eibach pro lift springs to get an extra 1.6" up front and 1" in the rear. That is pretty much it to fit 285s with a tiny little bit of extra trimming and using a zip-tie to hold the mudflap back. It's easy.

    @JustATallDude i don't think Eibach have springs for 2023 :(. They are only upto 2020 as far as I know.

    They definitely have them for the later year models with the fox suspension. Will be my next purchase when I need new tires.

    I’ve got the spacer lifts going on the stock pro suspension along with 275 KO2s. They fit easily with no trimming. Not sure if 285s would however. They should fit easily with the Eibach springs.

    Eibach front springs seem to require a special spring compressor. I have your typical coil spring compressors (inside and outside versions) but neither look to fit correctly on the front Fox coil spring of a 4Runner. Thoughts?

    How have you liked the lift so far? Any issues with the shock stroke topping out? Droop? I bought some TRD Pro shocks off a guy who built his Pro with less than 7k miles on it, am thinkin of getting the springs as well.

    I believe Eibach pulled the fox shock springs off their site, they had some noise problem with them.

    Yes it is what I used on mine. The ride is really plush to be honest, but I do have the front sway bar removed (might be helping some). When I 1st installed everything the rear was kinda harsh, but I ended up replacing the rear sway bar end links to adjustable end links and that made all the difference in the world.

    Have you had full extension of the shock stroke and it "topped out"? Any issues at all? I go wheeling once a week and several mechanics say just leave it stock or buy a lift kit.
